In this video, Dr. Berg talks about the pancreas. Normally it produces hormones (insulin and glucagon) to regulate blood sugars. However, the pancreas also produced enzymes to help in every aspect of digestion.
Bicarbonates are also produced to help neutralize the acids coming down from the stomach. If there is a gallstone obstructing the flow of enzymes, those protein enzymes then can eat up itself and cause pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas). This leads to endocrine pancreatic insufficiency.
There are other causes too: cystic fibrosis, viruses (autoimmune) and alcohol. However, high fructose corn syrup can also act like alcohol in causes pancreatic insufficiency. In fact, it can cause a cytotoxic effect on the cells that make insulin (beta cells).

I have started listening to Dr. Berg since December 2018 and followed his recommendations. I am diagnosed as diabetic for 6 and half years. On June 1st I took an Hba1c test and got 5.5. On July 2nd I took a series of blood test, two days later my doctor called me and said my diabetes is gone. I know there is still a long way to restore the liver , still I can see a progress. Thank you Dr. Berg

Tony Lohi I suffer form this as well. As far as I know it really can’t be cured, but yes as you mention treated. Treatment varies, some people need surgery but I’m not sure how much it helps and it comes with risks. Diet is a way to get around this in some extent. Low fat is the way and supplements of enzymes and extra vitamins A, D and K but talk with your doctor about it. Also stay away from alcohol and cigarettes. I’ve heard it helps for many to eat about 6 times a day and small portions because big meals causes inflammation when dealing with CP (chronic pancreatitis). With this disease I’d say it’s important to get checked on a regular basis for diabetes and other conditions. The risk of cancer is raised as well, pc cancer. The mortality with this diseases is higher, I’ve read articles that states we get 10 years less :( and that lots of complications can occur. So goodbye chocolate, fatty meals, oils, butter, ice cream and much more and hello very healthy food. It’s recommended eating no more than 20 g of fat or. day and not more than 10 g within a meal and this can differ from person to person. That is not much fat. I tried the keto diet but it was really really bad for my CP, I ate to much fat and intermittent fasting is not good for me. So my recommendation would be for people who suffers from PC, do research and figure what works for you, consult your doctor and make a plan for diet and maybe supplements.

I love your voice. So soothing. I have chronic pancreatitis, yes from alcohol. I’m using this quarantine to better myself. I’m one week sober, that wasn’t hard as I really just drank to feel better the next day. To get through life. Sad I know. But I’m still feeling dizzy daily. I have gone to the hospital twice in my life.. about 4 years ago and 8 years ago for the first episode. Both times I felt great afterwards and remained sober for months after, but slowly slipped back into drinking daily again. Since I’m not drinking now, I wanted to see what I can do to lower my high enzymes, as both times I was hospitalized I was told I have high enzyme levels and was not allowed to eat or drink for 2 days both times. I thought I needed to be put on an IV for fluids.. but I’m going to try to dry fast today and tomorrow and see if I get the mind clarity I need and had after the hospital visits. Please keep me in your prayers any advise is welcomed. I would love to get an IV put into me while I dry fast , since that’s what they did at the hospitals both times, but don’t know where or how to get one. So I’m hoping dry fasting let’s my liver and pancreas rest and heal. Maybe corona virus will save my life.

A Rob hey brother... how are you doing? Yeah, it’s sucks huh. I’ve been sober twice in my life, both times after episodes that I went to the hospital for. This time I actually stopped myself. It’s been great. Still feel a little dizzy , especially when I wake up, but its getting better day by day. It’s nice to get up and actually do things with my dog rather than drink a beer before I even get out of bed. I stopped on April 3rd and still going strong. I’m even at a home visiting where the guys were all drinking beer and I wasn’t even tempted really. Sure I wish I could have two beers and relax, but I feel kinda to good to want to slide back into it slowly. Two beers would be fine. But then the next week it will be 3. All it takes is feeling shitty one morning to make me have to drink another beer to feel better then I’m back to where I started. Hope you’re doing good. Let me know.

Theoretically you might be able to slow the progression of pancreatic calcification via a keto diet and some anti inflammatory supplements. But it depends on what is causing the pancreas inflammation. If it is the pancreas prematurely secreting enzymes then the diet may not help. Also high fat diet for somebody already with pancreatitis may actually stimulate more pain. Usually the management of pancreatitis is avoiding fats and oils. HOWEVER if you do not yet have painful pancreatitis then a low inflammation diet like keto along with a supplement like MSM powder/tablets may provide some protection from calcification. Keto controls blood sugar much better, thus less inflammation, and ketone metabolism produces less by products, thus less inflammation.

Insulin is the product of the pancreas, it’s what it makes for your other body organs to use. Your organs use insulin to utilize sugar. Sugar is use for energy which keeps your body organs alive. This is water down version. Insulin is a hormone secreted by beta cells found in the islet of the pancreas. There are several type of pancreatic cell types but beta cells are the only ones that produce insulin. Insulin is released into the blood and thus is distributed to all cells tissues and organs that have the receptors for insulin. The purpose of insulin is to allow the cells to transport glucose into the cell for metabolism aka glycolysis and and the creation of ATP. Without insulin the cell cannot transport glucose inside the cell effectively because glucose is a very large molecule which cannot freely diffuse across the cell membrane. It requires a transporter which is call GLUT. Now when insulin binds to the cell receptor it activates gene transcription for the production of more GLUT proteins which will help the cell get as much glucose into the cell as they can bind. He activation of the gene and how the message is transferred from where insulin binds to receptor till gene transcription, will take me a page to describe so only know that insulin activates genes which allow for glucose transport. This is his normal insulin works when the pancreas beta cells are working. During diabetic state type 1 the cells are absent or have been destroyed due to autoimmune disease. Your pancreas is no longer able to produce insulin and you will not live for long unless you are provided with external insulin. The external insulin works the same as the insulin your body will naturally produce. Insulin does not make your pancreas work, insulin is what’s keeping your cells from dying. If a cell is not able to utilize their main source of energy glucose (however the cell has limited other sources of obtaining glucose one of them metabolizing fats and proteins as seen in muscle wasting....) then it stops vital functions and dies. So does the organism. This explanation is from a biomedical student undergraduate hoping to one day make it to medical school. Cheers

Hi, dr. Berg! :) I love all your videos and I have a suggestion for another topic: benefits of adding cinnamon on keto diet. And I wonder: how much does cinnamon help with lowering blood sugar? How much of it would help keeping the insulin level low, if you would eat let's say a fruit or other foods that spike your insulin?

Thank you for your videos Dr. Berg. I could have stopped my type 1 diabetes! I'm crying right now, I now know I had symptoms for a year of pancreatic insufficiency but was a workaholic and never got a checkup, then COVID hit and 3 months later I was diagnosed as a type 1. I am so mad at myself. I was really still a pretty healthy person back then although I didn't know as much as I know now. If I knew this then, it would have changed my life, I would have never been diagnosed with this horrible disease. I have never been more depressed.

Does this mean low carb sweetners such as monk fruit /Stevia are to be avoided as they may not raise blood sugar but could potentially raise insulin? Also how would you recommend someone with leaky gut to adopt a keto lifestyle. As most keto approved foods are really inflammatory for someone with a a leaky gut and chronic inflammatory disease such as sjogrens. eg most nuts and seeds including, dairy and particular veg. Very limited option. Thanks
