The Fujifilm X-T5 has proven incredibly popular, and now we have a smaller, less expensive version with the same excellent 40MP sensor: the Fujifilm X-T50! What corners did Fujifilm have to cut to make this all possible? Chris Niccolls went to the Eau Claire Market mall days before it was demolished to find out.

The price jumped from 900 to 1400. That's insane. It's more expensive that X-S20, Sony a6700 and Canon R7. I know that new sensor is more expensive and addition of IBIS is also expensive, but still. They should have just add IBIS and price it at 1100 or 1200

Hard to get excited about a new Fujifilm camera. The X100VI has been on back order since it was announced in February with no sign of production being ramped up to meet demand. Concerning. I won’t hold my breath on the availability of this new XT50.

@@chengo51 True but it's kind of an apples to oranges comparison because the x-t50 with the new kit lens weighs the same as an a7 III (body only) and in general apc lenses are usually smaller and cheaper than full frame equivalent lenses. I'm not trying to justify the price increase but all im saying people going fuji don't really care about the biggest and bestest gear and will pay more for aesthetics and the tactile experience that fuji offers... still expensive though, only the kit option kinda makes sense.

@@Rick-rf7om Fuji's recent product release update stated that the demand for the X100VI far exceeded their expectations. They were expecting double the demand of the X100V. The demand has apparently far exceeded that. To that end, they are in the process of building out their production capabilities. The XT-50 should have fewer production issues unless the demand goes through the roof like it did for the X100VI.

The film simulation dial is completely useless. They should have just added a couple of custom modes to the existing dial instead. I reckon 90% of people don’t switch their film simulation often enough to make that more useful than a drive dial. Fujifilm has said they’ll continue making the X-T30 II. I would buy that camera or the X-S20 over the X-T50. Which is a shame because I would have bought this camera if all Fujifilm had done was add IBIS to the X-T30 II and price it below $1,100. However, the new 16-50mm kit lens is very enticing.

That price without being weather resistant isn't going to cut it for me. I already have an X-S20 for small stabilized camera that's not weather resistant, and an X-T4 for all weather shooting. My X-T4 upgrade path will either go to X-T5 or X-H2 at this point. If they'd offer a weather resistant variant of either the X-S20 or X-T50 I'd be willing to pay that price since I could trade both of my current camera bodies in since Dual card isn't a requirement for me but I definitely need one Weather Resistant body in my kit for rainy days and dust storms. The new 16-50mm WR kit lens on the other hand might be replacing my trusty 18-55mm next month.

Same. I mean surely WR is only withheld for artificial market segmentation, and isnt a physical size limitation to pop in a couple of rubber gaskets.... Heck, almost all new phones now have very decent WR and most can survive limited immersion. Convenience factor for that is high. What I'd love to see (and would pay for) would be a X-Txx 'pro' - the best possible small form factor camera they can make, that doesnt get nerfed on features that aren't physical size limited. So that means including eg better sensor, WR, higher res LCD/EVF etc. Leave the video heat mgmt, bigger battery etc etc to the larger body X-Tx. And lose that damn sim dial - cripes....

I love my X-T30 and was looking forward to an upgraded model, but the pricing just does not make sense when considering the rest of the fuji lineup as most people have pointed out. So far a lot of the early reviews have largely ignored the existence of the X-T5, but almost all of the commentary from viewers and consumers is that the the small price difference makes the high-end option a better buy. The X-TXX range's main selling points have almost always been weight, size and price: - The X-T50 now weights 100g more than the X-T30, and sits a lot closer in weight to the X-T5. - The extra weight of the X-T5 is partly due to a larger battery, and one of my biggest gripes with the X-T30 is the battery life. This is especially noticeable when travelling and spending long hours out and about taking photos. - Physical dimensions are still pretty small, but depending on the ergonomics that might be negated by the fact a lot of X-T30 users (like myself) end up buying external grips which increase size and weight anyway. The updated grip looks better, but how does it compare to the X-T5? - IBIS addition is a contentious one, but my point of view is that the X-TXX range should not try to be hybrid cameras when the X-SXX range exists. It is a nice addition, sure, but is it worth sacrificing the things that made the X-T30 an attractive camera (weight, size and price). I have hardly ever thought to myself that my X-T30 could really use some IBIS, mostly because I will grab the 18-55mm with OIS if I intend filming anyway. The new kit lens looks great, and them removing OIS obviously meant that IBIS becomes more valuable, but is that what X-TXX photographers need? - Price is the biggest talking point for obvious reason. The X-T5 is not significantly more expensive considering the upgrades appear worth it to many for the extra cost. Better ergonomics while still being compact enough, significantly improved battery life, WR, better viewfinder, dual sd slots. - I could be wrong, but I think the X-T30 was about 40% cheaper than the X-T3, yet the X-T50 is only 18% cheaper than the X-T5? That doesn't make sense. Aside from the features that made the X-TXX range attractive, the new dial makes no sense either considering most users liked using entire recipes and not just changing the base film sim. Being unable to store the rest of the settings makes the new film sim dial largely worthless IMO. I personally would have really enjoyed that dial if it was able to store custom settings, as using the Q-menu and cycling through recipes is a tiny bit cumbersome.

For me, this camera is a miss. The 40mp sensor (and its drawbacks), Film Simulation dial, and price make this a no-go. I like the body changes, minus the aforementioned dial. I could even tolerate that old battery. But I would have much preferred the older 26mo sensor and saved a few hundred bucks. For my money, the X-S20 or X-T5 are more practical. What Fuji needs to put out is an X-T5s - an X-T5 with the stacked 26mp sensor. That camera would sell out.

Can anyone confirm whether this has the 160mp multi-shot mode the X-T5 and X-H2 have? I've been looking at switching to XF from Canon EF-s for personal use (would prefer an X-T5 for the durability) and professional use (tethered on a copystand, where an X-T5 is overkill), but I'd really like that hi-res multi-shot if I went with the cheaper model.

I've owned an X-T20 and X-T30 from new. And in theory this new X-T50 is the ideal camera for me if placed in the old price range. But pricing this at just £200 below a new X-T5 seems utter madness. Why would I buy this camera over the X-T5 if it's no long the much cheaper alternative? Currently you can get a mint condition used X-T5 for less than the price of an X-T50 new - Fuji wouldn't make a penny from that sale. That shouldn't be the case. The X-T50 should be priced below used X-T5 levels.

As someone who just put in a preorder, let me share my perspective of why this is EXACTLY what I was hoping for. Currently, I use the X-E4 which I bought it when it came out in 2021. It was my first Fuji camera, and as a hobbyist photographer, the size was super important. I wanted something I could bring me with me at all times. I got the 27mm pancake lens, and it's a perfect everyday carry. Then I have a handful of others for specific situations. So why did I upgrade? First, the newest 40mp X Trans sensor. Second, IBIS. Third, pop-up flash. Fourth, I don't shoot video-so I'm happy with a photo-first approach. Do I think I'll use the film-sim dial? Probably not very often. I have a couple of recipes I like, and I'll probably stick with those. This is a beautiful camera. And it's a big bump over the X-E4. I would never even consider an X-T5 for size alone. As a hobbiest, I couldn't be happier!

Weird as I am in exactly the same boat as you and have the same thoughts. The X-E5 is rumoured for 2025 but I am impatient and have GAS. I have missed a flash, rare as it is, but fill would have been useful at times. I'll never use the film sim dial, as I too use recipes. But I have missed IBIS from my old Sony for low-light shots, which I do a fair bit. Using primes means I crop a fair bit too, so the more mpix, the better. I am waiting for prices to fall after availability and then may trade in my X-E4. After inflation the X-T50 is only around 100 GBP more than the X-T30 was, so already not too bad. Hope you enjoy your new toy. 🙂

But as a MFT (Oly) shooter, almost entirely stills, the size and weight with this are more attractive than the XT-5, fine camera as it may be. As I shoot jpg more often, the sims dial could be very cool. If it's a good camera that suits you and will enjoy over years then you will forget the price. And let's see how the street price finds itself over a little time. Compared to the price of 2 or 3 nice lenses a couple hundred more than you'd like is only that. Even here Richard Wongs review/testing notes the effective IBIS is about 4 stops, though for a small camera that’s not bad. Look forward to a formal review…still nice to see more small cameras. Surprised that the screen can’t face you, but that will likely appeal to many folks who prefer a tilt screen.
