Chief was originally going to die after getting hit by the train just like in the book (The Fox and the Hound by Daniel P. Mannix) It was in the original script, they had storyboards for it and he was animated dead But one of the directors of this film Art Stevens demanded to let Chief live because "it's a Disney movie" and It'll traumatized the children and will get angry letters from parents But Ron Clements protested to Stevens "Chief has to DIE! The Picture doesn't work if he just break his leg. Copper doesn't have enough motivation to hate the fox!" and the young animators agree and pleaded with Stevens to have Chief die so it would the moment when Copper turned on Tod and wants to kill him for it But Stevens argued back "Geez! We've never kill a main character in a Disney film and we're not starting now!" (Uuummm.....never watched "Bambi"? And also he's not a main character) So they had to reanimate the scene when Copper finds Chief and reanimate Chief's eyes to open and close so it lets the audience know that he okay So that's how it happened

When you’re a kid you think,” Oh thank god Chief’s okay.” But once you get to about 11 or 12 you realize there is no creature on earth that could get hit by a train, fall 100 feet onto the rocks, and end up in the water alive.

Copper’s face as he growls at Tod always sends a chill down my back. It’s the moment his innocence dies completely and swears revenge on Tod for something that wasn’t the fox’s fault. Yes, that isn’t the cute little Copper we saw earlier in the film.

@@moatguy4471It’s funny because even in the final version, this scene is played like Chief was actually dying. The way he slowly closes his eyes after seeing one last time his comrade, the way Copper react like he wasn’t gonna wake up anymore and later on when he said « Poor Chief, it’s all my fault » while looking in the sky like if he was imagining Chief being in heaven gives the impression that he was feeling survivor guilt. It’s obvious that Chief being ultimately simply injured was a last minute decision.

I think you might be right. If the train hit him, he most likely would’ve been crushed under the wheels, not knocked to the side.

I cant help but feel bad for Amos. First his property got vandalized over a misunderstanding. Second his dog almost died, bc of a fox's foolishness to not stay away. Then he stepped in a bear trap, that probably wasn't his, and almost losing his second dog out of loyalty, against that bear.

Actually that was a FOX trap and that WAS his. Also, Todd only went onto the property to say hi to Copper and both times Chief was the one that started the chase.

@@mariafox9226That was a bear trap not a fox trap. Fox traps are tiny. Amos’ hatred towards Todd is warranted, especially in the book.

2:30-2:33; Tod is like “What’s that sound?” and then “Uh-oh.”

Sad to be honest that all of this wasn’t Tod’s fault. It was Amos and Chief that chose to chase Tod even though if he left like Copper told him to, then the events could’ve been avoided. However, it would prevent Tod from meeting Vixey and starting his own family.

While I don't disagree, Tod was given several warnings to stay off of Amos's property. Imagine if someone keeps popping up and vandalizing your property even though it's unintentional and finally got someone you cared about hurt. I hate to say it but it's more Tod's fault even though it's accidental. He should have stayed off that property. However, I get wanting to see an old friend and not MEANING to cause trouble. In short, there are no real villains in this movie.

I don't get why Copper is blaming Tod for Chief's near death. He and Amos saw with their own eyes that it was the train that knocked him off the viaduct. Tod would never have intended for it to happen also.

Here's why The movie is based on the book by Daniel P. Mannix In the book, Tod intentionally does kills Chief by leading him to the speeding train and jumps out of the way before Chief gets hit and killed While in the movie, while it was a complete accident, Copper thought Tod purposely led Chief to the speeding train and almost killed him That's why Copper started to blame Tod for Chief's near death

Now true he COULD have meant for him to stay put until all 3 of them clearly left but he more than likely meant "when I get Amos away from this spot you get the **** out of here". What's going on is Copper really blames himself and the manifestation of that blame is directed at Tod as he has no other choice.

The more I rewatch the film, the more I can relate to Amos, sure he has a bad temper and is no above violating laws for his own benefits but at the end, he is a hunter, from his point of view, Todd is a wild animal and not a domestic pet who could be a treat for his chickens and his animals. He got values reasons to be against the fox especially when the animal is violating his private residence.

Lol wild animals don’t have any concept of private residences. It’s understandable for Amos to be irritated at best, but to take it as far as he did was silly.

It doesn't matter that Tod almost killed chef was being mean to him in the first place because Tod just wanted to hangout with copper in the first place because copper's owner was very mad at tod mother is glad that everything is okay but copper's owner was very mad at her for having a fox with her dude you can't just tell her to leave Tod go off on his own

@@bellamovie2Actually that’s because audience at the time didn’t appreciated Bambi ´s mom being killed ( and now are applauding the film for having the nerve of doing it ) which almost cost Disney reputation as being inappropriate for kids ( there was already criticism about Snow White and Pinocchio about being not appropriate for a younger audience which was the main goal of Walt about making movies as much for kids and adults.

Is it just me or does this remind anyone else of Varian from tangled

I was thinking the same thing when I watched the movie varian like copper was blaming his friend for something they had no control over in fact that seemed to be a recurring theme in Tangled the series have villains blame Rapunzel for something she had no control over. A lot of people take varian's side and say that he's a victim but like copper his motives for revenge seem unreasonable probably even more so since Rapunzel's temporary Queen couldn't just leave her kingdom and its darkest hour and even if she had left with him it would have been too late as he saw by the time he got home. He acted like just because she couldn't help him one time that means they have to be enemies not to mention that blizzard would have destroyed everyone in Corona which last time I checked includes him and his father.

Im I the only one that think this surfed Chief right.
