I have doubts about Tipsarevic and Troicki. They both had kind of a jump in rankings between 2011 and 2013 and they disappeared together when Troicki was suspended after missing blod test... It might just have been the after effect of the 2010 Davis Cup win with Djokovic, but it looks fishy to me.

Federer faced unexpected stiff competition from the then unknown Serb Janko Tisparevic in the third round of the 2008 Australian Open. Federer had lost only 6 games in his two previous matches, so this five-setter came out of the blue. Tipsarevic played spectacular, but Federer's experience proved too much to handle in the end. In the highlights I've tried to incorporate English commentators as much as I could. For the points I couldn't find English audio, I had to keep the original Russian audio (sorry). Enjoy!

What a wonderful video. Shows off Fed's shotmaking, his movement, and also those moments of fragility. In counterpoint, it also shows off some wonderfully fierce and utterly fearless and penetrating hitting from Tipsarevic, with an uncanny ability to stretch Federer wide and then double down and hit past him - something I don't think I've seen very often. It's a real pity that he was injured so often - what an exceptional player, and it's a loss to the tennis-loving public that we didn't see more of him and the epic matches he would surely have played. Thank you, Raz Ols for having great taste and for giving us a real treat!

Tennistv and all GS channels should release ALL of Roger Federer's full matches from all tournaments in full HD quality, as a gift and public service to humanity. That was a stupid comment because Djokovic is 6 years younger than Roger. You don't get faster as you age - you get slower. Especially if you're an elite athlete playing guys 5-6 years younger than you are who are hitting the ball harder than ever - and therefore the balls are traveling faster through the air. You can see that today with Nadal - and Djokovic - who are widely considered 2 of the fastest players ever. There are balls they can no longer get to just as there are balls Roger can no longer get to. Welcome to Aging 101.

So telling to watch these highlights. His drive backhand was quite safe but not really a weapon as it just wasn't quite as technically sound during those peak physical years. Back then he could afford to do a lot of defense and running around. Federer was so fast here. Still quite fast today but he was arguably the fastest player in his prime, apart from Rafa on clay of course. However, I think Federer's technique, especially on the backhand and return, was best in 03-04 and probably even better from 2014 onwards. It was at his technical peak in terms of technique in early 2017. That was probably the most technically complete player of all time.

When the Aussie court was fast…what a shame, to me, that they slowed them down so much…it is so much more fun to watch this way…and Federer would have had 2 or 3 more titles there…

I just think that RF been being a too nice guy. Sometimes the point is his for taking if he only been more aggressive with it. He just play it nice and give the other guy a chance and the other guy just make a shot and won the game. He is GOAT for sure but it can be frustrating to watch.

What I want to know now is this: what is the longest match (by time) that Federer ever won? This falls just short of his 4 hour 26 minute win over Del Po at the 2012 Olympics. Has he ever won anything past 5 hours?

If Federer took as much time on his serve as Nadal, some of his five setters would have probably gone over 5 hours. Federer once won a game against Djokovic in 47 seconds (4 aces in a row, Shanghai 2014). That is barely enough time for one Nadal serve 🙂

hes only really played over 5 hours against nadal/djokovic, its a combo of how long they take on serve and the fact that theyre all so good the matches go for a while. big reason the 2012 so final took so long
