The Forbidden Gospel Where Jesus Kills People

The Infancy Gospel of Thomas fills in the gaps of the life of Jesus found in the canonical New Testament gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. Here, the child Jesus makes living birds from clay, curses people, performs miracles, smites and embarrasses his teachers, and confounds those who know him. This was a popular non-canonical gospel, being depicted in ancient Christian art of many forms. While not recently discovered, such as the books of the Nag Hammadi library, this gospel was considered heretical in the minds of many church fathers across time.

@James Black ok then, what is the proof that what you said occurred? You accuse me of having no proof yet are the victim of the same thing. Most atheist skeptics are like this, they provide no alternative, they only pick holes. At least in the Bible there are prophecies that support Jesus, which although could be heavily biased is more than saying something is false with no evidence. Plus the Bible is surprisingly accurate on historical events compared to other ancient texts.

I love your insight that the young Jesus acted like the Yahweh of the Hebrew Scriptures - vengeful when angered and helpful when placated. Possibly these stories expand on the brief comment in Luke: "Jesus advanced in wisdom and stature, and in favour with God and men." (Luke 2:52). Perhaps the text demonstrates that the young Jesus had to grow from that state into Wisdom, the Jesus of the Gospel. We should always remember that these ancient people were just as sophisticated as we are in their story telling. Thanks for a good vid

The anvil doesn't learn anything at all from getting hit, but the smith gains experience in bending the metal to their will. Like the student doesn't learn anything valuable, it's just the teacher that learns how to make students obey without thought. If you know how metalsmithing works it's obvious.

This Jesus reminds me of those powerful children we see in sci-fi stories, like Tetsuo from Akira, or that kid from The Twilight Zone who banishes everyone with unhappy thoughts to the corn fields. What would happen if a yet mentally undeveloped child would receive godlike powers? So next time you ask yourself "What would Jesus do?", the follow-up question should be "At what age?".

To one without STRONG faith. He is easily fooled by this because of them being CHILDREN. This did not fooled the son of God, he read there spirit and future. Even though he was a child himself. What happened to them was righteous, and may have saved the world as far as we know even the people that are attacking God's son for doing this. And the later scriptures proved that these children were NOT going to be of the body of Christ. It also revealed that Christ father taught him in righteousness. This people should get what they got. I think the idea of ‘Jesus being a violent short tempered asshole as a child, then an irritable but more patient teenager and young adult, and understanding the harshness of past actions and the power of human emotions becomes a caring patient and forgiving god in the end’ is a really good story and really fleshes out why he is born in the context of Christian lore. To understand the world from the viewpoint of humans he had to be human and face those challenges. As a child he had the knowledge of a god but lacked the wisdom of an elder. As he grows and is shaped by his experiences he becomes wise and starts to act with benevolence and forgiveness. I’m agnostic but I do love learning about this stuff and I believe there is a certain emotional power to stories like this. “Even the wicked and vengeful can become blessed and loving” it’s a good message for those struggling under the weight of their emotions or mental health that there is hope but you must learn and grow from your past.

I am an atheist, raised outside of religion and not in the US, so my knowledge of the Bible is pretty limited. Watching this video remind me quite well of a passage of the Matthew 21 I read once : 18 Early in the morning, as Jesus was on his way back to the city, he was hungry. 19 Seeing a fig tree by the road, he went up to it but found nothing on it except leaves. Then he said to it, “May you never bear fruit again!” Immediately the tree withered. 20 When the disciples saw this, they were amazed. “How did the fig tree wither so quickly?” they asked. 21 Jesus replied, “Truly I tell you, if you have faith and do not doubt, not only can you do what was done to the fig tree, but also you can say to this mountain, ‘Go, throw yourself into the sea,’ and it will be done. 22 If you believe, you will receive whatever you ask for in prayer.” Reading how Jesus killed a tree that dared not bear fruit when he was hungry clashes a lot with the image of benevolent person (and thus God) that is sold in Christianity. However, I feel like it fits pretty well with the image of Jesus given in the Infancy Gospel with Jesus being temperamental and killing people and things that displeases him. Seeing these different things, I feel like the image and interpretation of Jesus have in fact evolved a lot through the time the new testament existed. Which is quite logical, with it having been around for a bit less than two millenias.

Young Jesus sounds just like his father---God. He is easily provoked, judgmental, arrogant and makes excuses for doing vile things to other people. But I do find it amusing how frustrated Joseph was according to these stories. I mean, he always had to keep apologizing for his son killing or blinding people. This Jesus reminds me of that kid in the Twilight Zone episode that starred Bill Mumy and was about a kid with God-like powers that people were terrified of because he could kill with his mind.

One of the churches I grew up in had a pastor who was deep into theology, which in the years since becoming an atheist is the only thing I have remotely common with him is a mild fascination for it. Having now heard about the Infancy Gospel through here, I'm now in the mood to read these in hopes we have more stories that are absolutely hilarious.

@Morgan Edgett @Joe F Why would it ignite skepticism? This kind of stuff was addressed almost 2,000 years ago and we still have the refutations. The non-Canonical Gospels have problems relating to authorship and standing out/contradicting all the other Gospels. If there are 6 historical accounts and one veers off and contradicts the others while having a much more disputed and distant-from-original-eyewitnesses background it'll be rejected. I remember arguing with a Flat Earther once. He kept asking questions I had never heard before and couldn't address. That didn't make him right, it just meant certain fundamentals aren't always examined. Just talk to a Christian scholar who is an expert in this stuff rather than arguing with random Evangelical parents who often aren't taught this stuff. Eastern Orthodox theologians study this stuff all day. Consult them.

The big danger with the "all God's actions are morally justified, even if you can't see it" argument is that it opens you up to Pascal's mugging. Someone wants your wallet - they don't even have to claim to be God, just acting on his orders. You can't prove that this is not the case, so you must hand over your wallet. Now this person cuts off your finger. You can't morally punish them if they're acting on God's orders for the good of mankind. How does maiming you help mankind? You can't understand, you're not God. Now they kill your family. Again, by this logic, they are unpunishable and have, in fact, performed a moral good. You can't prove that this is not the case.

I think child Jesus had the same anger as His Father, unlike His Father though, Jesus broke the cycle of toxicity and bettered Himself as He grew up, He matured, He grew in character. I think being raised by humans helped with that, helped Him understand empathy and sympathy, helped Him be more reasonable and patient with people. Instead of lashing out and destroying human beings out of anger or petty annoyance and frustration. The only time we see him freak out when He was older was when He turned the tables in the Temple, but rightfully so, the Temple, like the Church today, should be a place where people can go to pray or meditate or what have you, and especially feel safe - But it was turned into a "den of thieves". And at least He only withered a tree out of annoyance, rather than a person. I think Jesus eventually grew to love and care about human beings more so than His Father did...
