The Flugelhorn

Музыка

Mucking around with the flugelhorn. Unfortunately I don't really know much about these instruments, so this isn't perhaps as useful as other videos I've made.

Trumpet player all my life here. I think that the flugel, as goofy looking as it is, has the most beautiful sound of any brass instrument. It took me a long time to figure out how to play one correctly. It's not just a matter of playing it like a trumpet. If you do that, the sound will approach that of a trumpet. You need to back way off and not play so aggressively. That can be a real challenge. Doc Severensin, perhaps the greatest trumpet player of all time, could do anything. But if I had to find one fault with Doc, it's that his flugelhorn sound wasn't the best. As terrific Canadian trumpet player-teacher Chase Sanborn says, "The flugelhorn's your mistress; the trumpet's your spouse. Confuse the two and you lose your house."

I like that you call it a goofy instrument. As someone who's never played a brass instrument and really doesn't have any experience or knowledge of them, other than knowing how good they sound, the flugelhorn looks fine to me.

Do you recommend a beginning trumpet player (5 months) to buy a flugel? I love the sound and I like having a lot of instrument lol. Would it affect my trumpet playing, since I'm not experienced yet?

@@marije179 If you want to double, you have to learn that your approach to them has to be different--and they use different style mouthpieces. I would become reasonably proficient on trumpet first. If you play too much flugelhorn, it will adversely affect your trumpet playing. The hardest part of playing flugelhorn is backing off. Trumpet playing is much more aggressive.

Two more facts about the flugelhorn: It plays in the treble clef, and follows the same fingering chart as the Bb trumpet. In other words, if one plays the trumpet, one will be able to play the flugelhorn. I made the transition in less than a day. 😉

@@henrymarks2237 👍 I agree. Other than a slightly larger mouthpiece, I transitioned to the flugelhorn from the trumpet in a less than a day. I must admit this was not the case with the soprano saxophone. I also play the alto saxophone for many years; so I thought I could segue right into the soprano saxophone with ease since they both play in the treble clef, and share the same fingering chart. To my dismay, this was definitely not the case. Their embouchures are quite different. It took me several weeks, and a couple of hours a day to make a good transition from alto saxophone to soprano saxophone.

I think I have some more information for you about the Flügelhorn. :-) It is mainly used in traditional German wind music. There it is the melody instrument together with the Bariton (and the B-flat Tenorhorn), while the Trumpet only gives signals. It is called Flügelhorn because its position in the marching band was on the left side. The translation for side to German is "Seite" or "Flügel" in this case. I hope this information is helpful for you and I wish you much fun with all of your instruments!

Been in love with the flugelhorn for years... decades, really. I guess the first time I heard Clark Terry I was sold. It was one of those love at first sight moments; actually, at first sound, to be correct. Finally, just around Christmas 2020, I got me a beautiful flugelhorn! After all these years... can you imagine my excitement!? I was giddy as a 15 year old lad before his first date with the most beautiful gal in the school! Even just looking at the instrument fills me with a sense of awe. What craftsmanship, what artistry... Best to each and every fan of this beautiful instrument.

I've played the trumpet for quite a few years and acquired a fluegelhorn a couple of weeks ago. I always loved the sound and I love playing it. It is easier than playing the trumpet. However, at present, I have less control over the volume. I can play the trumpet without a mute without disturbing my neighbors, but I always play the fluegelhorn with a straight mute because otherwise it is _loud_. I can hit the low notes much more easily than with the trumpet and, of course, you can't go as high. I would recommend it as a second instrument to any trumpet player.

I have tremendous respect for musicianship including the dedication and hard work of mastering of an instrument. I played drums for some 10 years before I felt comfortable with different genres, improvising etc. And then I stopped, because now I'm making music in FL Studio, also for a game - because it's much much easier, regardless of the genre, than playing or having anyone play live. It's worlds easier and simpler to compose, arrange, and make music on music-making DAW:s as the programs are called, with great results - and that is a big reason why I respect "true" musicianship, because it actually takes serious effort to be able to perform well live, whereas digital music production (like I said, regardless of genre, with all the VST's and sample packs) is made worlds easier, faster and cheaper nowadays. For example, the guitar vst's I've used can be used to create completely authentic-sounding music with high quality. But for someone to actually pull those lines off live, through hard practice, is so much more difficult (and needed for live performances), and of course gives a better result when the player is professional. Great video and great playing!

"Unfortunately this horn is not in tune..." ...which seems to be a common theme across most flugelhorns I've heard in real life (i.e. not a produced music video that got autotuned/mixed nicely). I've always liked the flugelhorn, but the tuning issues are the main bugaboo that keep me away from owning one. Then again, a lot of people say the piccolo trumpet has similar problems, but I haven't had those problems, personally. *shrug*

ljshamz No. The tuba isn't a proper family of instruments that has soprano, alto, tenor, bass members in the same way as the saxophone family. The tuba is a tuba, a euphonium is a euphonium, a baritone is a baritone and so forth. I know that some people call various types of tubas 'bass tuba', and 'contrabass tuba' and so forth, which would seem to contradict what I've said, but they're just names for various variations on the tuba. It's still not a 'family'.
