The Floating Castle | Samurai Film Review

Ойын-сауық

The Floating Castle is one of the newest releases I have reviewed on the channel so far. Set in 1590, it follows the interesting story of the siege of Oshi by Ishida Mitsunari, during the Toyotomi war against the Hojo. I often hear a lot of good things about this film, and am looking to see if it is worth all of the hype... Let's find out!
"The Floating Castle" is the property of Toho and Asmik Ace Entertainment.

    From a Japanese point of view, the armor and costumes in Ghost of Tsushima feel strange because they are from the Warring States period, about 300 years later! The people's names are also quite strange. But the Japanese have always been used to the unnatural portrayal of the Japanese in American movies and games, and they accept it with a laugh!

    A couple of the best Samurai films ive seen are The Twilight Samurai and The Hidden Blade....they are excellent. Something interesting ive noticed is that at the end of Twilight Samurai Seibei's daughter talks about what happens to her father a few years later....and it lines up with Hiroyuki Sanadas character in The Last Samurai at which takes place a few years after Twilights time period. Someone had to of done this knowingly

    I love your channel. It's blessing for a history buff like me and to understand Japanese history better than I could have done otherwise. lThat being said, I ike the fact that the film tried to be as historically accurate as possible. A lot of films set in a historical period often try to make things more dramatic in a way that hurts the history aspect, something I have often found myself disliking. I love Dunkirk, not from a story perspective (because it's just the rescue of Allied troops from Dunkirk and there isn't much of a climax) or because of the characters(none actually stick out) but how that film managed to make me feel the fear among soldiers at that point and showing the immense stakes.

    Great review! I'll be sure to check this one out. I agree, samurai movies were so much better during the 50s to 80s. I think a good reason for that is because that was when the greats like Kurosawa, Kobayashi and Mizoguchi etc. were still around. You just can't replace talented directors. P.S. Many of your interpretations of this film I agree with. One thing you did not add is the Japanese view of humor. Specifically a scene when the castle is flooded and everyone is muddy. Standing at the entrance of the living area of the castle, the castle is clean and they are muddy. Do not want to spoil it too much for people that have not watched this movie.

  • @ontaka5997

    This film was made as a comedy (I don't know about the original novel which the film was based upon), and should not be watched seriously like a Kurosawa film. The Japanese title is"Nobou No Shiro" (のぼうの城)and points at the lord of the castle and the protagonist of this film "Narita Nagachika" who's nickname was "Nobou", taken from the Japanese word "Deku-no-bou", meaning useless person. Although he is being called "useless" by the common folk, he is loved by them at the same time because of his friendly character. The actor who played this role is a famous "Kyogen" actor (Traditional Japanese comic theatre developed in the 14th century). The climax of his acting is when he performs a traditional "farmer's dance" on the boat (but gets shot). The number of side characters, especially from the defending side may be confusing, but maybe the purpose was to show that Nagachika was loved by everybody around him, whatever their personality. One note from the production side was, that the original script was written for a 240-minute film, which the director found too long and the budget too high, and had it shortened to a 145-minute film.

    A big part of why the western army lost to Tokugawa was that many Toyotomi loyalist daimyos had little respect for Ishida Mitsunari for reasons you stated and were reluctant (and in some cases downright refused) to obey his commands. This resulted in the western army at Sekigahara becoming very disorganized and uncoordinated comparing to the eastern army which united under Tokugawa Ieyasu's banner. Sometimes I wonder, had Mitsunari did better here and gained more respect and support among other daimyos, would he have had a different fate at the battle of Sekigahara?

  • @memedsengokuhistory7621

    @memedsengokuhistory7621

    4 жыл бұрын

    In this movie (which is an adaptation from an old, popular Japanese novel), the story that Mitsunari was in charge and insistent on flood sieging Oshi castle was made-up. It was probably Hideyoshi who ordered the strategy, and actually Asano Nagamasa who executed it. Mitsunari was just inspecting the process, which was most of his jobs. Mitsunari also wasn't the commander of the Western army, and while he was one of the founders, his role was rather insignificant (although he definitely fought valiantly). Instead, The main commander was Mori Terumoto, and second-in-command was Ukita Hideie. Since Mori Terumoto was unable to arrive at his supposed spot, which was taken by Kobayakawa Hideaki, the actual commander when the battle broke out was Ukita Hideie. So, overall (this film included), Mitsunari had been described as a pretty terrible person just because the victorious side was Ieyasu. Mitsunari also wasn't unpopular, but just that his brother-in-law Fukuhara Nagataka (and a lot of army inspectors during the Japanese invasion of Korea) played favouritism when they reported back to Hideyoshi, causing certain daimyos like Kuroda Nagamasa, Fukushima Masanori and Kato Kiyomasa to be severely punished. When the 7 samurais attacked Mitsunari, they were also attacking Maeda Geni and Mashita Nagamori, not just Mitsunari.

  • @jeffreysams3348

    @jeffreysams3348

    4 жыл бұрын

    Yes... The really big divide was in the Toyotomoi retainer ranks. The ones who were considered the military side (Kato Kiyamasa, Kuroda Nagamasa, Fukushima Masanori etc) all were big Ieyasu supporters. It should be noted that Nene (Kitamandokoro) - Hideyoshi`s wife suggested to all of them that supporting Ieyasu was not a betrayal of Hideyoshi.

    Just watched it so I could come back to this review, I had a hard time at first, didn't really like Nagachika but after some character development I was genuinely surprised and rooted for him, even liking and respecting the damn guy! The movie had goody sides, but it didn't take away from the enjoyment, I really did laugh at the parts that were humorous and that boat scene was really endearing. Overall a fun movie once you sink your teeth in it, thanks for the video/recommendation!

    13 assassins was an amazing samurai movie. Some of the best sword fight in awhile, imo. Also, I know it’s about Korean general Yi Soon Shin, but the movie Admiral Roaring Currents was an awesome movie (arguable not that accurate in how the naval battle takes place.) it covers some of the Injin war. You don’t get many movies of samurai in naval combat

    "The Twilight Samurai" is a damn good modern samurai movie. It's not a big action movie or one that's highly stylized. It's a very realistic take on a samurai in the 1700's, showing the cultural and moral decay that happened to the samurai, a military social class that had been at peace for a century. That final duel is something that sticks with me, the tension that builds up beforehand is almost too much to take.

    Great review of the movie, but there is one thing that you did not bring up in this movie. You missed the humor that was put in it? From my experience in the Japanese culture and in filmmaking. I make this movie out as a historical comedy. You actually see it in the beginning of the movie when the characters are introduced. The scene when the farmers are in the rice patty planting. I could name a few other scenes that were actually humorous, but I would be spoiling too much of the movie

    I've noticed that the majority of recent Japanese films lack either choosing one side or another (lack of a clear good and bad guy, is an example so as not to hurt people's feelings), (over) emphasis on some sort of meta, or, like this film, lacking a good, satisfying climax.

    The movie features the Battle of Sekigahara as well as the lead-up to the inevitable battle. The only thing is that Mitsunari is portrayed like a hero while Ieyasu is a scheming dick

    By law: If it contains less than two samurai per full length feature film, it is not a true samurai movie, but only a samurai themed movie. This is the law of the land brought to you by its messenger Rex Remedy.

    I wouldnt mind seeing films about the neolithic people settling the Oi river valley. They both are the first Japanese, but they are also not Japanese because that is who their descendants are going to become.

    There's a few points you raised that I can't take seriously at all: there's obviously some bias that comes from an unfamiliar historical context from your end. This is an underdog story, with the defenders only having 600 samurais and under 2000 ashigarus, plus only an idiot would expect a grandiose cavalry charge on both sides in a siege. What level of scale do you need? Nevertheless, it is expected when productions go along the more realism-oriented, Taiga-style route, the execution tends to fall flat to non-Japanese viewers.

    Takashi Miike's Haragiri is a good modern day samurai film that departs from the formula and follows a poor samurai family trying to survive during the waning years of the samurai class.

    Modern Japanese movie industry has become derivative. New directors are influenced by anime, tokusatsu or tv show style of directing. It also doesn't help that talented people would rather make an anime movie because it is much cheaper to produce than a live action movie. It's really weird to see how Japan's live action movie industry is slowly declining. Granted we do see some gems like Floating Castle but it still hasn't reached the level of a Kurosawa film.
