    I always thought that the novel’s version of the flare virus was far superior as it slowly had people lose their sanity and humanity over time. Whereas in the movie they were basically just zombies. but in the books, they were people, utterly insane, delusional and dangerous. but they were still people. and it was heartbreaking to see newt’s slow surrender to the virus in the book, becoming more and more unstable. ANYWAY hope you enjoyed this thread!

    I liked the cranks more in the books because even when they were insane there was still times where they would think like normal people for a little bit. I remember Thomas mentioning a woman who was completely insane, but there was this moment where she completely stopped what she was doing for like 20 seconds, and Thomas described her smile wavering as if she didn’t know what she was doing. In crank palace there was another lady who would say the word purple in stead of some words. She also broke down crying about her child. I remember thinking that that really showed how even though they’re insane they still show emotions.

    @@user-mp8wy8lp4y Yes, but compared to what they had in the books this version was way less interesting. The cranks from the books also looked horrible, with blood all over their head because they ripped most of their hair off in agony. Some ate their fingers, or someone else's fingers or even someone's nose. All while still yelling words and some sentences that as the further they, go into insanity make less sense. They did this to themselves and eachother because they went insane, the virus on it's own didn't really change anything visually. In my honest opinion, movie adaptation crank is a downgrade from the book crank, and is more similar to a classical zombie.

  • @SunlessSage

    @SunlessSage

    3 жыл бұрын

    @Yuna Kaneko Lee In one of the books (I think one of the prequels) there was one crank who thought the main characters had eaten his fingers, and how he hoped it was tasty since he was planning to do that to himself in the first place. (He obviously ate his own figners, but simply forgot.) If one thing made cranks stand out it was that slow mental degradation and loss of humanity. Instead they went too much with the classical zombie route. They didn't have to make them look the same as the books, but the lack of the psychological element is really disappointing. A shame really, they made a decent first movie and had a chance to make it a rather memorable trilogy.

    Ok but If you read the books, you’d know that this is set in the future, where global warming has become a HUGE problem and we have virtually no ozone layer, and the sun flares cause such radiation that, if this were in the future, this would absolutely be possible.

    In the 4th book(a prequel) it goes the the very beginning of the viris(basically shows patient 0 but instead of a person it is a village) and in the book the virus starts out by killing people within seconds but very quickly evolves and starts to kill more slowly over time. So they had no idea the virus would turn out that way. Also the book cranks even the ones past the gone are more like crazy people than zombies and the movies portrayed them COMPLETELY wrong.

    The virus (in the books) originally was supposed to shut down the brain painlessly, infect many people but then eventually become inert and stop spreading. However, due to the virus's unpredictable genome the virus mutated to survive longer and kill slower, this created the cranks. The movies did not explain this well and almost completely changed how it worked.
