The Five Best Ways to Manage an Inguinal Hernia Without Surgery

My personal effective treatment! I have an inguinal hernia caused by working out. I could easily feel it with my body walking around and with my hand when I pressed on it (felt like a small gulf ball); but it wasn't full blown enough to required surgery ... yet. Needless to say, I was panicking. I looked into non-surgical treatments online. Some helped a little. But this is what helped best. I was lucky to have figured this out with some help online. I just do one exercise: I put a 7" soccer ball (child size) between my thighs (around and above the knee - not below the knee for me) and squeeze it while watching tv for at least about 30mins. It's not a hard intense squeeze - just enough that I feel I'm squeezing it with some pressure. I do this every night without fail while I sit or lie comfortably on my sofa (sideways usually) watching tv to distract me making it less of a chore to do it. I've been doing this for over a year now every day/night (even during vacation), and my inguinal hernia is no longer detectable by hand, nor do I feel it otherwise (if you know what I mean), anymore. I work out without any issues. And I never miss a day for fear it will start to bulge out again. Please try this for a week or 2 at least (I think I started to feel it work within that time). If it works then that's it. Continue every night. That is literally the only thing I do now religiously. Hope this helps someone! Good luck!

Mind if I ask how long you had it before doing the exercise? What age were you when you first had the accident? Assuming it was inguinal, do you ever get relapses? Do you ever hold that area by hand just for assurance, say when coughing or the like? And do you ever lift weights? Thanks, just wanted to check any parrallels with my own case.

@@OttoGrainer27 I had (still have but it's not noticeable now) my inguinal hernia about 2.5-3 years before I started the exercise of squeezing a mid-size soccer ball (8.5" in diameter). I got the hernia about 7 years ago at around 48 years old. It's completely unnoticeable now. Coughing doesn't show it. I lift kettlebells as heavy at 32kg over my head without any issues. I do competition style kettlebell lifting. The hard-style snatch is how I got the inguinal hernia (maybe because I was doing it wrong ... don't know. Regardless, I stay away from that particular exercise). I did try planks about a year ago, and that did aggravate the hernia after 2 or 3 days of doing it. So I stopped immediately. After that, my hernia was gone again (after the plank I noticed it more within my body and not my touch, if you know what I mean). I squeeze the soccer ball every day without fail, even on vacation. I'm so paranoid that it my come back. Since I've been doing this exercise, I've never had it show. I run around 5-13km as well. Let me know if you have any other questions. Hope this exercise helps you!

@@dammitjim9131 Oh my man, thank you so much, more than I could ask for. I got mine around 13 years old, doing sit-ups with my legs flat, and feet hooked underneath a heavy furniture; terible idea. Been over a decade now, always lived with it but wanted a change. Done martial arts and some weights & running no problem, but considering army training. Known about natural attemps for a while, but just tried yours last night, using approximate sized cushions -- definitely felt the muscle pain or fascia around there adapting in a good way. Never used those parts for so long before. Just worked a full day standing / walking in a factory, really please at the prospects so far. In those first few weeks, did you ever have issues with a congested feeling as the hernia closed more, or did the intestines just flow out less and less? If I have a problem doing planks at basic training, I'll just get a mesh in w/ laparoscopy, if the belt/truss doesn't sustain it. Appreciate the input.

@@OttoGrainer27 I never had issues with a congested feeling as the hernia closed. I had issues doing the plank but you may not. Just be careful doing them. Btw ... I would strongly advise (I'm not a health expert. This is just my personal opinion) using a child size soccer ball approx 8.5" in diameter (that's what I use with great success). Cushions are too soft imo. I feel a soccer ball will give max results. Also, the convenience of having a soccer ball/volleyball around at hand is important too, I think. As I mentioned, I do this exercise everyday. Hope this info helps! Good luck!

@@OttoGrainer27 One other thing, my hernia was around the size (no bigger) than a golf ball or slightly less in size. It's no longer noticeable but I feel will start to come back if I stop doing the exercise for more than a couple of days.

    1. Get a hernia Belt or make one 2. Hold the hernia during coughing, sneezing, pooping, etc. 3. Don't eat foods that inflame the intestines or foods that cause bloating (ex. Meat, gluten, sugar, bad carbs, etc) 4. Walk lightly to avoid stressing out the hernia from the intestines bouncing around exessively. 5. Exercise regiment, YOGA, breathing exercises, stretching, good posture, etc. Keep searching for new ways to treat the hernia.

George, thank you so much for all your efforts. The comfort truss is amazing. just got mine tonight. I put it on about an hour ago and haven’t taken it off. It feels like I don’t even have a hernia. I was diagnosed with an Inguinal hernia a month ago but have probably been suffering from its effects for the last 7 months. Can’t thank you enough. I can only imagine the improvements the truss and the exercise routine will bring to my life.

But only problem comes whenever I try to do any strength training or hit the gym there is a fear and always some pain starts developing in pelvic region(dont know whether its physical or mental) & I stop training Else when I live normally taking precautions there isn't much problem

Thank you SO much for sharing your experience and knowledge, and giving the rest of us a short cut. I already had to take years to figure out parasites and that I have mold sensitivity. But I actually think I've had a hernia this whole time that was causing a lot of my symptoms, that no doctor thought to check when I mentioned discomfort in the area. I've dug into everything you posted and ordered your belt. I'm making sure to go back to taking yoga regularly. A few things that have already helped just this week: Drinking aloe (1 oz mixed with 1 oz of water 3 x's/day). Castor oil packs - reduces inflammation big time, along with salt and essential oil baths. I sleep on my side so I'm putting a small pillow between my legs. Chanting - no kidding - works the muscles. I also have an hour commute to work a few days a week and stand on the subway for 45 minutes of that. I discovered that standing for long periods of time aggravates the hernia - I can only imagine what the bumpiness of the train does as well. I've read that licorice and comfrey (herbs) rebuild muscle - so I've been taking licorice, though I'm going to be making a comfrey, colloidal sliver poultice. I took a natural medicine class this year and I avoid anything unnatural as much as possible. I've actually found that for everything that's affected me these past years - western medicine was useless and it was alternative practitioners and herbs that made me functional again. Also, my natural medicine instructor explained that it's actually rather traumatic for the body to be cut into for surgery. We may not think it causes an issue but the body has complex systems, and cutting into it and adding things that weren't originally there, can have complications in the future that we wouldn't make the connection between. Cheers!

These ways to manage an inguinal hernia without surgery are very effective. Aside from the belt (I have also not found any effective truss or belts on the market, so hope to get a reply on the one he has designed and possibly sells), I have independently confirmed the effectiveness of these methods (in myself and those who consult me). The standard of conventional care with a hernia you can push back in and without further symptoms (e.g. pain, functional issues) is "watchful waiting" (i.e. wait to have surgery unless it is absolutely necessary). combined with lifestyle modifications/interventions precisely like those mentioned in this video. Surgery has several potential issues that favor the lifestyle intervention approach. There are more things you can add (e.g. supplements for gas and bloating, anti-inflammatory snacks and drinks, the importance of staying well hydrated, yoga boat pose) depending on your individual condition and preference, but this video really does a good job of listing the main things. If you had to pick two to really get on top of, the anti-inflammatory/anti-bloating diet and the exercises would be your core methods. Many thanks and thumbs up for this video!

Thanks ! I recently developed a small inguinal hernia, which is only occasionally problematic (thank God ) . I noticed the effects of holding it in and also the position of going to the toilet too. But youve added more here, like defensive holding whilst coughing or prior to doing something you know could push on it etc. I have done yoga regularly for a few years which I believe strengthens my ab area, but do you think boat position is useful or harmful? I guess it depends whether you pull your abs in correctly before getting into position. Thanks for all the tips, I feel encouraged, and great to see you're a fellow drummer!

Excellent pointers. Thank you very much indeed. I'm a 50 year old male of 80kg. I try to manage my hernia. Its been around 5 years now and apart from the early dsys and months I've managed it ok I think, but it has been pulling or nagging a bit lately. I surf. I run a little. I have a manual job (gardener and farm worker) I do yoga (although I've stopped my classes lately because of lockdown, which is a lame excuse and I think I may be feeling it now) Also possibly drink too much beer and that may well be gassing me up a little, although I generally only drink 1 bottle in the evening after work with my meal. Buts something to be aware of I guess. (The whole gas thing). That links into diet of course. I generally intermittent fast. 16/8, but I don't do keto. I did it to reduce a bit of weight but primarily for the other associated health benefits. I would recommend it. In a morning when I wake I make a drink of a half squeezed lemon , a teaspoon of psyillium husk and tsp of turmeric powder. (I don't eat untill midday or 1pm) that concoction helps with transit through the bowel (previous days food) and inflammation reduction from the turmeric. The hot lemon has many benifits which I'm sure your aware of. Very true what you say about staying aware and working on keeping the hernia as well as you can. I'd been looking for specific strengthening exercises in and around that groin area, and I think I need to follow your breath exercise (which of course ties back to yoga). Thank you again.

You’re welcome. I’ve found that controlling gas and intestinal swelling is a huge part of it. As soon as there is any swelling the abdominal contents is taking up more space and trying to find the path of least resistance which is the weakness in the inguinal canal.

I just had open surgery for an inguinal hernia on my lower right side. I put up with it for about 4 yrs, I didn't know what that bump down there was! The pain and worry of keeping this hernia wasn't worth it, so I'm glad I got it repaired with a small piece of mesh. My surgeon said it was better to get it done. I do a lot of the techniques you mentioned in the video too. Getting it repaired was worth it.

@@BoysLikeMeee Thank you for your opinion, however, even doctors are recognizing that mesh rejection is an issue and to the extent that many hernia patients are opting out of getting one. Those who do hernia surgery without mesh, who are trained to do it by that method, have just as good a success rate. I've learned that having a mesh can exacerbate allergies, auto immune disorders and get rejected. It depends on the person's immune system. But I'm glad yours is doing well for you. I worked in physical therapy 47 years and and lifting heavy patients took it's toll. The best way to get the hernia to slip back into the intestinal wall is to get into a trandeellenburg position (inverted upside down) position and stay for 20 -30 minutes and gently massage the inguinal area. Then lay in your side opposite of your problem areas. Then do but squeeze exercises. Treat your self gently.

By the way, I have 4 doubts that I would appreciate if you could answer me... 1) How long should a hernia belt to use? 2) Is the hernia belt you promote comfortable and can be used for exercise and sexual relations? 3) When should the hernia belt be removed? 4) Currently, when you pooping or happen to have to play the trumpet, do you wear the hernia belt? Those all... Thanks a lot! Greetings from Barcelona! Raúl

    1. All day every day. You should not let the hernia pop out at all throughout the day. 2. Yes it’s comfortable and can be used for both as long as you are confident that it is holding Ernie in. Everyone is different so you have to determine this for yourself 3. When you go to bed at night 4. I currently do not need the hernia belt at all except for when I ride motocross I wear it. But when my hernia was popping out a lot I wore it every minute of the day that I was awake.

did you ever get a colon cleanse, where they rinse out your colon with water, washing out nearly all fecal matter? Also, what do you think about liver and spleen detoxes as it seems eastern medicines attributes these issues to pathogenic problems in the organs as well as long term emotional distress? I have recently found I have an inguinal hernia. It currently seems to be incarcerated. For several days I was unable to have a bowel movement, which is considered life threatening. I am all but absolutely determined not to get the surgery. I have started with laxatives which has begun to get my bowels moving. I am considering a colon cleanse, a heavy detox especially of the liver and spleen as my next step. I do hard physical labor, and have still been able to work so far, although I am taking it easy, and I am definitely planning to relax myself. I was in a very difficult emotional state for nearly a decade, and I let myself go in many ways. The past year, my spirit is much happier. My emotions are much more in balance, and I was really getting to a positive state of well-being. You also mention you had found no other case of someone healing without surgery. My research suggested that in eastern medicine/in orient, they very rarely undergo surgery and instead use herbs and detox. Any thoughts or comments? Thank you for your dedication and for sharing. It is definitely encouraging and gives me hope. You are an amazing being. Kudos, and thank you again.

Everything is fine until a few days ago I coughed sleeping and felt a very strong burning..I gained weight and forgot to take care of myself at all times ... i have to start over ... remember ... never let your guard down ... greetings all.

I'm 21, just had surgery a year ago for an umbilical hernia and just recently started getting a pain in my inguinial area. Checked and now I have a bulge. I really think it's genetic.

I'll try these. I have 2 inguinal hernias. I understand you have come up with a truss that helps. Where can I find that?

@@exceedingabundantly203 Hello- about your question of position. I don’t have her on top doing repetitive bouncing because of pressure. Other positions are all good. For you all positions should be fine. A lass from the past had a hernia and it hurt when I started pounding on top, so she could only take deep thrusts comfortably and that was just fine.
