Summary:
Hello everyone!
In this video, we will address a very important question we get asked every time we advise a patient that they have to undergo a hernia operation. And this question is - sir, they say when you put a mesh for a hernia operation, there can be so many problems because of the mesh. And that is why I don’t want a mesh. Can you do an operation without a mesh? So this mesh in a hernia operation is an extremely useful innovation which drastically and dramatically increases the success rate of hernia repairs. But these meshes have their own share of problems. But luckily, the problems we face because of mesh, is much rare. So today, in this video, let us see what can go wrong when you use a mesh to repair a hernia.
The most important dreaded complication when using a mesh to repair a hernia is the risk of infection. Meaning the mesh is a foreign body. It does not belong to our human body. It is a foreign object which is kept inside the human body and stitched. This means the mesh does not or will not have the normal blood supply like every other part of the body has. In any other part of the body when an infection is introduced, the immune cell and the antibiotic medicines are immediately sent to that part through the blood vessels, and these help in fighting the infection and the infection is cured. But when a foreign prosthetic material is kept, like a mesh or an implant or a rod for a fracture, there is no blood supply. So the bacteria in case they get lodged into the mesh, are completely protected from the antibiotics or the body’s natural immunity. So whatever medicines you give cannot reach the mesh. This is the reason once the mesh gets infected, it is very difficult to cure that infection. So many times, the antibiotics do not work. And the only cure for this would be to re-operate and remove the mesh altogether. So this is a dreaded complication but luckily, in good hands and in good standard hernia repair centres, the chance of a mesh infection happening is extremely rare, to the extent of less than one percent. See in most places, hernia operation is extremely safe with a very very low risk of mesh infection.
The next much rarer but more serious complication is mesh erosion. This means the mesh can sometimes start sticking to the nearby vital organs, significantly, the urinary bladder or the intestines and can start eating into that organ and create a hole in the organ. This is an extremely rare complication which happens in less than 0.1% of patients. But when this happens it needs a re-operation and the mesh has to be removed and the hole in the intestine or the vital organ has to be repaired.
All these complications of mesh are not common at all. So this should not scare one when somebody says you need a mesh for hernia repair. You should not say no, no I have read that very serious things can happen because of mesh. I do not want a mesh. The benefits of a mesh are far far more important than the chances of these complications happening. If the mesh is not used in cases of a hernia which actually needed a mesh, the chances of re-occurrences are very high. So the patient would end up coming repeatedly for hernia repairs. The advantages of using a mesh far outweigh these complications and in good centers, these are extremely low risk of having these complications. So the mere knowledge of these complications should not deter you from being scared of a mesh or trying to avoid getting a mesh for a hernia repair.

After your surgery, here's what you need to do. Number one, lose a little bit of weight. It'll take pressure off the area. Number two, give it time to heal. Worst mistake I ever made was going back to lifting weights two weeks later. You need to be patient and wait the full 6 weeks. Number three, eat healthier foods. No processed foods, avoid too much sugar. It'll help bring down inflammation. Good luck with your surgeries guys! I had a laparoscopic inguinal hernia surgery last August. My pain is about 90% gone. Still healing and being careful.

Doctor, your channel is the absolute greatest, and this video points to all concrete facts. I'd recently undergone bilateral indirect inguinal hernia repair (laparoscopic/robotic) along with a right femoral hernia, ALL 3 of which had been incarcerated. All repaired with mesh and V-Loc sutures. Everything you have mentioned in this video is precisely parallel with everything my surgeon had informed me of prior to my procedure. Many thanks for all you bring to us viewers of your channel, and love from America. 🇺🇸 🇮🇳

Those who've had this done complain about complications quite often. I've seen a tummy tuck done and the woman had a umbilical hernia. The doc just pushed it back in and sewed it up and started the tuck. Explain. Why did he just push it in and sew it up without mesh? I also know the mesh combines with your own tissue over time and if there are complications and the mesh needs to be removed, your tissues will have to be ripped out along with the mesh and many docs who can put the mesh in don't know how to properly remove it which makes no sense.

However, it now takes away much of such worries, being assured of the complications being rare, and even if they do occur, there's solution. This video would've relieved many who've already used mesh or are likely to use one, of their tensions concerning complications from use of mesh in hernia repair. 💡

I’ve experienced severe reaction and complications form my mesh implant. I actually came out of anesthesia from the surgery screaming and thrashing however, in my case I didn’t have ethical doctors that were honest and they withheld the information that mesh was used. I’ve been rushed back to the same hospital where they practice from over 150 times by ambulance because my bowel movements are with severe vomiting, blood pressure drops and now finding a doctor to help me is almost impossible. It’s been four years. My teeth are cracking. My lymph nodes are swelling all over my neck. I have spongy dermatitis. My breasts are completely calcified. There’s not a doctor locally that wants to get involved because they don’t want to be the doctor that gets the other ones that were dishonest and withheld this information about the mission plant from me in trouble. This has been at my expense in April one month ago something came out in my bowel movement. It was very long and look like a surgical type material, since this happened not vomited with any bowel movements nor needed nausea medicine that I’ve needed to take every six hours since March 6, 2020 when the mesh was implanted when I have a bowel movement now the left side of my body goes completely numb. I’m stuck in this body and I can’t find doctors to help me.

I had an umbilical hernia fixed many years ago - 30 or so years ago. That hernia failed so a full screen door of mesh was inserted in 2001. This year, 2023, I had that hernia completely dislodged and then became strangulated. 2 years ago I found a tiny piece of plastic in my thumb - deep in my thumb. This 2023 strangulation required a full hernia mesh replacement and the doctors did not find one piece of my previous mesh in my entire abdomen - nothing. I think that mesh dissentigrated and has become lodged in the fat of my thighs and underarms - as if my body is encircling it. Is that possible.

Well, I'm one of these rare patients that's had to have a re-hernia repair operation because the 1st surgeon put the wrong kind of mesh in my lower abdomen and my body was allergic to it, I had a pin sized hole that formed below my navel that was draining clear fluid and then a year later I was in severe pain, I had to get a 2nd surgeon to examine me and he said that it was possible that I might have 2 recurrent incisional hernias, so I was back on the operating table again. The surgeon was right, I had 2 incisional hernias, plus the mesh that I had inside of me had stuck to part of my small intestines so the surgeon had to shave off part of my small intestines to get it a loose from the mesh. All because the mesh was the wrong type, my body was draining fluid because it was allergic to it, and my body was in pain because the mesh stuck to my small intestines!! This surgeon put the right kind of mesh underneath the bad kind so that my intestines wouldn't get stuck to the mesh again and so that no more hernias would form.

@@MegaHowtoMan Aww thank you, I'm doing fine now. I would suggest getting a second opinion from a experienced surgeon who knows how to perform surgery the laparoscopic way because there's very few scars afterwards, and the healing time is much faster. Though there's still risks involved as with any surgery. The mesh is a must with hernia repair because it does help in preventing any more hernias from forming. I hope this helps you. If you have any other questions feel free to ask me. I love helping people that's going through this.

Chronic groin pain is not rare. It happens up to 15% of the time. There are ways to check to see if you're more prone to it by a good pain management doctor. Also, make sure your surgeon has experience with managing it if it happens.

I have a hernia on my right abdomen from gallbladder removal surgery. They did the open one and not the 3 holes on me. What are the chances of any of that happening to me? My weakness is violent coughing and violent sneezing in which I have to hold my right abdomen from expanding too much during the short episode. I was hoping the mesh would slowly dissolve not remain there indefinitely and the body would use the mesh to create a new layer as an abdomen wall or something like a meat graph from another part of my body and use that to block the hole. I definetely do not want a groin pain as I have that or it's a groin strain but currently has been mitigated with leg, lower back, walking exercises and only happens when I stand.

What I don't understand is, how can it be good to take a relaxed (!) elastic object (mesh) and fixate it on a tense (!) object (inner belly wall)? when the gas is removed and the belly is in a relaxed state again, what happens to the mesh, that got fixated in place? depending on how strong the fixation is, it would create wrinkles together with the tissue or the fixation gets lose and the mesh is now in an uncontrolled position. please, anyone with experience can answer this?

I had laprascopy ventral hernia repair with mesh inserted. MOST IMPORTANT TO KNOW IS DO NOT LIFT, BEND, OR PULL, OR YOU'LL PAY FOR IT BADDLY WITH MORE PAIN. It takes 3 months to be able to lift. This is long but, nobody helped me to know the do's and don't 's, so I am trying to help others as this is important information. The first , 2nd and 3rd day were the worst, specifically day 1&2. It was hard getting out of bed, so you have to use your arms and legs, never your stomach. Even though I was in pain, I walk around. By the 3rd day I was able to meke my meals. I removed the gauze day 3, and the stiches tape day 7th. I have not used any chemicals on the three stiched incisions. I showered day 3 once I removed the big frontal tape with gauze under. I have been eating healthier, meaning vegetables, fresh juices, fruits, and lots of water. Sugar, oily foods, saturated fats was a no-no response from my body, I stopped taking the hospital painkillers day 3, and I was given 5 days supply. Do not baby yourself by walking everyday it will help you not getting blood clots, helps the circulation and your oxygen levels. Just keep walking. 💯

This doesn’t even begin to cover the full spectrum of problems with the mesh. And due to patients with complications being dismissed and not counted, your statistics are incorrect. I’ve been suffering for 14 years with complications relating to my lymphatic system as well as endocrine problems from the chemicals in the polypropylene composite, like oleamide, and I’ve never been counted. And erosion is the norm after a decade. How many people in whatever studies you’re referencing for complication rates had their meshes in for over a decade? These problems are extremely common, but those of us with complications are not believed, helped, or counted for these statistics.

Did you get another hernia repair with the newer meshes? The doctor mentioned the ones used in laparoscopic surgery as being more successful in terms of a lower incidence of complications. Be that as it may, 1% is still a lot. The FDA, WHO, and NIH all said that the Covid vaccines were safe. There were skeptics who didn't believe them and now those safety claims are' being challenged with all the sudden deaths that include both healthy individuals and those with existing co-morbidities; not to mention those who've developed other illnesses like cancer. I ran across a mass action lawsuit against one of the manufacturers (Bard). And that continuing lawsuit keeps adding to the number, which as of February 22, 2023 was at 18,813 cases, up from 17,954 in November 17, 2022. These are all the cases in all 50 states in the U.S.. It is the 3rd largest mass tort in the U.S. One law firm is handling all of these claims and this is just one manufacturer. So imagine all the other lawsuits involving all the other manufacturers. I'm looking into abdominal hernia repair for my mom since she's suffering greatly. She's 80 years old and experiencing constipation relieved only with laxatives. She discovered a lump under her skin to her right of her belly button on Feb. 14. It wasn't painful then but she couldn't poop for about 7 days. It wasn't until she took a laxative that she could relieve herself. Bloody diarrhea came out. After that she started experiencing extreme pain. She can barely get up from sitting or lying down without any help. Her resting heart rate ranges from 100 - 110 bpm. Her mental awareness is severely diminished. I don't know how much longer she can go on with any treatment. She's already fragile with other health problems so she doesn't need anymore due to a surgery or leaving the hernia untreated. Are you aware of any non-mesh surgeries?

@@bp50blu The Desarda technique is great for those whose hernias it applies to. I also like things like drinking 2L of water first thing in the morning, and a restrictive diet of fresh, local, in-season fruit, animal products, minimal veggies, and quality grains like sourdough. I also really like enemas. As far as new mesh, it’s all the same. Plastic doesn’t belong in the body, period. They lie to patient after patient saying the new mesh is better. That’s what most of the sufferers in the mesh injured groups were told. The data is so skewed because mesh patients who come back to complain are disregarded. The rates of success are far from reality. That’s all I can really say from my experience. I wish your mother all the best.
