I juxtaposed watching "Ukraine on Fire" and "Winter on Fire", studied Russian Area Studies in uni, and I sided with the people of Ukraine not wanting to live under the thumb of a murderous leader and his insiders pillaging the country for every last ruble. Even now, many of the "Russian Ukraines" solidly identify themselves as Ukrainians and want NOTHING to do with Putin or Russia. They've created an enemy out of their Slavic brothers and sisters at their border. Bad move that means a worse future for Russia irregardless of what happens in the coming weeks-months-years. I’ve been so grateful for our comedians during these epic times. They offer not just laughs, which is always good for the soul; the good ones, offer insight and resonance and even instruction, especially when addressing topics that we hide from, often avoid and try to silence. We’ve seen plenty of comedians and performance artists in our lifetime fall short of being their best selves and we’re seeing many rise above their worst moments, just like the rest of us. They’re human and hold the mirror to our humanity - the good, the bad, and the ugly. Many talk trash, many hold on to their toxic ways, and quite a few burn too bright too quick and leave us too young. Comedians are known to be brave in their own way, but this is another level of courage that we’re witnessing. This is example of an empowered person who shines and happens to be a comedian/performance artist turned world leader. We’re seeing his character and getting to know him through this war. It’s quite a contrasting example to what we produced and directed in the U.S. The Zelenskys found their courage - their light - and decided to embody the LIGHT in this lifetime. The sphere they’re in now happens to be politics on a world stage and their role in history is a major one. But we’re all playing our part - some more deliberately than others - in co-creating our world. Just like all the regular people of the past did and those of the future will do. I send LOVE to the Zelenskys and the Ukrainian people there and abroad and the many brave Russian people against the war protesting and risking freedom, safety, and life to stand up for what’s right and the neighboring border countries who are prioritizing supporting their fellow humans in need. And I pray for all of us who find ourselves in our little corner of the world wondering what our role is in this matrix we’ve created that feels so doomed sometimes. Let’s keep doing what we can, when we can, every way we’re called to help the world heal and become more just AND peaceful, trusting that others will pick up the slack when our own bucket needs a re-fill and knowing that the best thing we can each do is tap into the LOVE vibes and practice compassion with ourselves and each other.
