The First Frybread Western Film | Native America | PBS

Official Website: to.pbs.org/3L5EoQm | #NativeAmericaPBS
Manny Wheeler fights to preserve his people's language by dubbing popular movies like "Star Wars" into Navajo. In looking for their next project, he and his partners turn to westerns, a genre that has a history of misrepresenting Native peoples as primitive, vicious, and violent. "A Fistful of Dollars," the film that launched the Spaghetti Western is about to become the first Frybread Western. Stream Native America Season 2 on pbs.org and the PBS App: to.pbs.org/3L5EoQm

Building on the success of the first season, this four-part Native directed series reveals the beauty and power of today’s Indigenous world. Smashing stereotypes, it follows the brilliant engineers, bold politicians, and cutting-edge artists who draw upon Native tradition to build a better 21st century. Each hour reveals a core tenet of Native heritage: the power of Indigenous design, how language and artistry fuel the soul, the diverse ways that Native women lead, and the resilience of the warrior spirit. Brought to life with dynamic stories of the here and now, these thematic episodes launch an active dialogue between past and present. They reveal the foundational beliefs and traditions that Native Americans carry forward to this day, even as they live fully modern lives.

This should have way more likes. It's an interesting concept. I loved the conversations and nostalgic memories they had about westerns and their family connections. I look forward to seeing this and sharing it with friends.

This is amazing! I'd love to see that! It would be great to have a translation of the idioms, which I bet would add a whole new flavor. 🧡 Edit: excited typing ✌️😎🍀

Taking an English-language Western movie and dubbing it into Italian doesn't create a spaghetti western, so why would dubbing one into Navajo language create a frybread western? What they need to do is create an original western movie in the Navajo language, I'd definitely watch it.

They're called spaghetti westerns because this genre of western was made by Italians, mostly with Italian actors, and we're dubbed in English. They had their own idiosyncrasies, which endeared them to audiences. Dubbing Fistfull of Dollars into Navajo will give it it's own flavor, thus "fry bread Western."
