The first Electric Wind Instrument with CLARINET fingerings!

Музыка

It's about TIME someone made an EWI with Clarinet fingerings. Well Roland did, I review their Aerophone Pro AE-30 from the perspective of a clarinet player.

You'd have thought multiple mouldings for different instrument types (not just sax fingering) not unimaginable and just have "the clarinet version" of the same basic engine. Mind you, you'd have thought also that the keys might not be so horrible!

I'm an intermediate bassclarinet player and has an AE-10 since 5 months. I learned myself the saxophone fingering.* I'm not so fast as on my bassclarinet but it works for me. It took me 2 weeks to get used to it. You have to consider it as a different instrument. The AE-10 has multiple octave keys with your left thumb. You can play up to 3 octaves and down 1. So low C on the bassclarinet sound: I finger the lowest C for saxophone and the octave key down. I love all the internal sounds, I love the build in vibrato (I can't produce a nice one myself) in the 'supernatural sounds' (SN) . with earphones or on an amplifier table model they sound good enough for me. With the app you can combine multiple sounds to one and tweak a lot. And I love the key changes you can do. Recorder sound in Bb or play a play along for Altsax with the sound of a bassclarinet in Eb. Or a panflute in Eb. I'm having so much fun with it! *And in my mind:maybe in the future I want to try a real Tenorsax too. I know the basic fingerings now. Clicking sounds :mine makes less noise than youts, less than my bassclarinet. (my low D en C are noisy) I love the aerophone, it is a different instrument. But small and lightweight and easy to grap to play a few notes. And fun to play. Even the recorder sounds great. And the cello, bassoon and so on. :-) Warning : the aerophone must be stored upright so that the moist can drip out after playing! I found online a 3d print model for a holder you can attach to the pole on a tabletstand or microfoon stand. I had an old music stand, shorted it and have a nice and cheap stand for the aerophone. Took only 6 ours printing. :-) Greetings from the Netherlands!

Yes. This instrument was defaulted to the saxophone fingering. Great content and very insightful to create your own fingering. Using the Ewi mouthpiece setting rather than the sax setting actually helps to control the pitch bend.

  • @wiredbassclarinet

You get a lot better control with the lip pressure by setting it to “sax” (the default), following the calibration instructions in the manual, and, in my opinion, setting it to “system” (meaning to overrides the individual patch settings always), and then setting the level to 0 cents bending upwards and 50 cents downwards (or 100, if you’re feeling saucy). That has been what has worked the best, in my experience. Thanks for this video! That is crazy that the custom fingerings don’t work on the clarinet setting - they do work on the sax fingers (so hopefully that will get fixed!)

I appreciate a lot the overview of the aerophone from a clarinetist perspective. I've been recently fascinated by the concept of wind synthesizers, thinking about possibilities as recording music, composing and performing, all available to someone proficient in some type of wind instruments. Of course that, been a clarinetist myself, I do find appealing the option that Roland is giving for users to somehow mimic the clarinet fingering in a saxophone layout, and it's interesting to see the limitations that this option presents. Just some hours ago (since I posted this comment), I discovered a company called EMEO that offers a wind synth which is basically a real saxophone body with electronic components inside of it. On December 2021 they posted on their social media the same concept but with a clarinet body, so it would be interesting to see if the concept becomes a reality. I would look forward to know your thoughts about it!

Isn't it using MIDI? There's no mic! I think it's extremely cool and wish I had one!

The issue is that it's still built with saxophonists in mind. If you're going to make a wind synth with clarinet fingerings, you have to make one based on a clarinet. Having clarinet, flute, oboe, EWI, saxophone, recorder, etc fingerings on the same instrument just won't work as well as anyone would like it to because of just how different clarinet fingerings are to the rest.

I am a sax player but I also play some clarinet. I play one of these in my jazz quartet. Even with a loud group, I have come to tolerate the noisy keys. I prefer the quieter AKAI mechanics. But AKAI can not beat the internal sounds on this instrument. So until then, I am sticking with the AE-30.

Just to comment, and haven't used one but my saxophone is finally quiet after seeing a repair tech earlier this year. I'm not sure how called for noisy keys are, I mean how hard would it have been to add some felt, cork, or something like normal keywork to quiet it down. I get that it's meant to be amplified, but it doesn't seem like a great user experience. IMO as a kneejerk reaction. =)

For more than a decade, instrumental music has been removed from the schools, and the community has suffered as a result. The Roland AE30 provides the most efficient way to cover doubles to date. I have used this instrument in club, studio, stage and pit.

I am a classically-trained clarinet player (I've even played movement three of the Mozart concerto when my concert band toured Italy a while ago), but I also play in two modern rock bands, an original band and a cover band. I was hoping the clarinet fingering on this would be better, but alas, it looks like for ease of use I'm going to have to bite the bullet and just learn the saxophone fingering for it.

The jazz v classical thing is because it’s made for saxophonists. All electronic wind instruments I’ve played are for sax players mostly, and if there is anything there for flute or clarinet fingerings it is token. I play both, so it works, but the fingerings are optimized for sax

I recently bought an EWI Solo by Akai (I know you play EWI too) and as a clarinetist (even if I know the fingerings of other wind instruments too) I am very happy with the standard EWI fingering because it is conceptually similar to that clarinet and has numerous alternate positions to facilitate difficult passages. Instead, I see from your review that the Aerophone Pro AE-30 does have a custom clarinet fingering but lacks flexibility because there aren't always more efficient alternatives. Furthermore, the EWI mouthpiece, being more rigid, cannot be bitten involuntarily while on the Roland the reading is on the pressure of a reed which, being thin, can be more easily pressed involuntarily. I think that giving up expressiveness or limiting it because the system is too sensitive is a non-negligible problem. Another thing I don't like about the Roland is that the keys produce a click, in a set up with other acoustic instruments it's a very annoying thing. Thanks as always for your high-level content!

    @Bladel19652 жыл бұрын

"As a clarinet is kind of sucks". Kind of obvious when it's not a clarinet...... Nice intro, classical music can sound great too on a wind synth. Just like Wendy Carlos played Bach on synthesizers over half a century ago. Amin Bhatia created very impressive original orchestral music with just a few synths (listen to his Interstellar Suite). The Will Gregory Moog Ensemble even use MIDI windcontrollers in their performances. So there’s much more than Jazz for synths, wind synths and windcontrollers. I even noticed that electronic wind instruments are very popular among church musicians in the US. Over many decades these instruments are also often used in TV and movie soundtracks. Apocalypse Now, for example, has a lot of EVI (electronic valve instrument) in it, played by EWI/EVI inventor Nyle Steiner. And don’t forget the pit orchestras in many theatre productions where wind synths cover multiple parts. You’ll be surprised how often you heard a wind synth without knowing it. That’s just about the ‘genre misconception’ that I noticed. I actually did feel the need to reply because I don't agree with your approach to the instrument. A little background: I played saxophones for a couple of decades before I got my first MIDI windcontroller, a Yamaha WX5, some 2+ decades ago. Over time I got more into it and completely converted to wind synths and windcontrollers and currently own a collection with over 20 electronic wind instruments. Not the Roland AE-30 though, because the AE-10 that I bought when it first came out proved to be a bad investment. (Compared to the other instruments I play, maybe it’s just fine if that’s all you have or know.) You state that the Roland AE-30 is unique in controlling filters through breath pressure, but that’s actually the “industry standard” ever since the first commercial wind synth was designed and sold in the first half of the 70’s. Simply because (low pass) filters influence the harmonics of the sound, changing its character AND its loudness. Every electronic wind instrument player, who ever tried to control (virtual) analog synths, knows that only controlling loudness or volume doesn’t sound interesting at all. The vast majority of the instruments in my collection I got used off of auction sites. Bought from people who were disappointed. They thought that they bought an electronic woodwind instrument that they could use for silent practicing. Often helped by the marketing of manufacturers and shops. Or that they bought an instrument that was just Plug & Play. I have had windcontrollers that were used but unplayable just because it wasn’t setup or calibrated correctly. I understand that you want to make your life easy and want a controller with the exact same fingerings as the instrument you’re used to, the clarinet. However if companies needed to design a different version for every woodwind instrument around, it wouldn’t be commercially viable. There’s a reason why they once started with a woodwind controller that resembled sax fingerings the most. On a sax the basic C to C notes in a scale are similar across the octaves, making it easy to design a controller. The first electronic woodwind instrument from the early 70’s, the Lyricon, used those fingerings with a few extra keys that would allow for a half and a full step up or down, creating a very easy to learn fingering method based on that basic saxophone scale, but without most of the extra pinky and palm keys saxophonists have at their disposal. Don’t forget that acoustic woodwind instruments have their fingering methods because of the position of the tone holes, not because that was the easiest or ergonomic way of playing all the tones. An electronic version doesn’t have that limitation. That’s why I think, based on experience, that people who are after an electronic version of their acoustic woodwind instrument will be disappointed. But when they want a different instrument, with a whole range of different sounds and a huge 7+ octave range and by using the basic skills they learned playing their acoustic instruments and the expressive controls through breath, lip and other body parts, they’re lead into a new, interesting musical world. What I’m actually saying is that when you take it serious and take a few weeks to adapt to the instrument, instead of trying to adapt the instrument to what you’re used to, you’ll quickly see the benefits of the design. I do agree with you that such an expensive instrument as the Roland AE-30 shouldn’t have noisy keys. (I’ve heard they improved that with the new AE-20) The wind synth deserves to be used everywhere, also in chamber music, if that’s what you want. There are plenty of wind synths and MIDI windcontrollers around that can do that. Happy playing!

The internal sounds are horrible, but you can use patch from your computer or iPad for better sounds. A thing I noticed though is that the latency got worse after an update... I was happy with it and had it with me on live shows in a funk band, but now I am not so comfortable anymore...

I always think that if you're using any wind synth (even external synth sounds) to try to copy real acoustic instrument sounds you're going to fail 100% of the time. I prefer to simply use actual synth sounds like out of a real analog synthesizer (like Moog) or whatever else, deliberately not trying to sound like a "real" instrument. It's a synth controller, not a replacement for any woodwind.

I’d buy one in a second if the keys weren’t clacky. I think that Aerophone has a great software interface and being able to adjust parameters on the iPhone or other interface is where Akai, with the EWI, has fallen way behind, and that’s a shame because the Akai has had plenty of time to up their game, both with the instrument and their software, and has continuously given us changes many of us never wanted. Roland. Fix the clacky keys and I’ll be on board.

It's neither French nor German System it is Boehm System vs. Oehler System. This Roland - fully features on Sax fingerings, that's why I personally rated this down. The video is fine, however, the product, Roland made here and that was demonstrated has nothing to do with a clarinet sound nor fingering - just another cash cow to milk. My 50cts (by the way: knowing and having played both systems ;))

I agree with your view on the bite sensor, and wacky fingerings, but the blow sensor is surprisingly good. The AE-05 at about £300 was too expensive - the AE-30 would seem ridiculously expensive.

Having clarinet fingerings on an electronic wind instrument just doesn’t make any sense. The benefit of a wind synthesizer is the huge range of 5 or more octaves. Clarinet has different fingerings for every octave, so this fact immediately takes away the advantage of the range of an EWI. Clarinet snobs can learn the few differences of sax fingerings if they want to actually use an ewi as intended. I say this as someone with a masters in clarinet performance btw

@@abcdeisthekeygaming277 lol not mean. Just truth. Mr. Lowenstern seems to be one of the few clarinetists that have gone outside the box and knows quite a bit about sound technology. That's why I'm surprised he'd spend so much money on a bad design when he sounds so good on EWIs

If anyone would arrive at a symphony orchestra or even a concert band with these type of tools, I believe they would be asked not to sit down. Sure in a few years you will find some orchestras and wind band with all electronic tools, but in purity, I think everyone can agree that the traditional musical instruments must stay in the musical repertoire.

For heavens sake!!! EVERY clarinet players knows sax fingering - it is exactly the same as the upper register of any clarinet, Bb, A or Eb. Why make out that there is some HUGE difference between sax-clarinet fingering? Surely, the upper register G#-A trill is so simple, why bang on about the G#-A trill around the break? As a former Principle Clarinettist in H.M. Royal Marines Band (UK) it is sooooo simple to switch between the two! Now, if your talking about oboe v clarinet/sax fingering that is a whole new ball game! However, taking fingering aside the clarinet tone on all Roland 'aeros' (I have played the 10, 20 and 30) is abysmal. Regarding Sugru; I too have used this but I have had to extend the D palm key on the 20, and 30, as whenever I went from, say, upper A, or B, or C to D I almost always hit the Eb palm key - sugru has fixed this. On the 10, btw, there is no need as the palm keys are much better sized. Have fun with your 30, I love my 20; I rarely use the synth tones as I am very classically orientated and make most use of tones such as violin, cello, oboe, bassoon, trumpets and some ethnic tones - all good fun! Best wishes from UK.

To say “it kinda sux” you need say no more 🤡 The natural clarinet sound simply amplified if need be is better than this electronic instrument. All the technical problems it has which you have pointed out make it *NOT* worth it for me… 🤷🏼‍♂️
