This video was great! Especially after watching the one from 2021! I totally was fooled when you played too! Your dynamic range was far better on the synthetic reed. I’m in Orange County so I might head up to LA and try some on my Jim Kanter MP :)

I’ve been dying to get one for my R13 as an add on. But when I tried my friends with the extra Eb key I felt like it got in the way. Youre motivating me to learn to adapt. The things I do to work around when you really need an alternate fingering!

Tunes that have great bass clarinet parts... I played the 2nd woodwind book in the musical Purley. Tenor sax, clarinet, bass clarinet. I actually played the clarinet parts on soprano sax. The bass clarinet parts were the jazziest, most fun bass clarinet parts I'd ever played.

Tosca player since 2006-2007 (don't remember exactly), luckily my clarinet doesn't suffer too much the low F even with the normal fingering, but using the correction key Is useful and practical for long notes or pieces like Weber.

This contrabass clarinet is more user friendly than the ones made in the past. It has a low C and the distance between the left and right hand is closer than the one's made in the past. The player can sit down as opposed to having to stand up.

I got really lucky with this. I had played clarinet and bass clarinet for a while now but at some point in high school I switched to Tuba for some odd reason. It took me nearly 3 years to pick up a clarinet again and when I did, the bass clarinet I got from my college had the alt key and I practically relearned how to play it with that key from the get go

Old people with arthritis their fingers can get really bent and gnarly. One of my old now departed friends was about to stop being able to play, but could play a plateau clarinet. For a while Leblanc could put the plateau keys from one of their student models onto the body of a Leblanc intermediate model and result in a very nice instrument. Unfortunately, the fire they had destroyed their stock of plateau keys and the tooling. It's nice to see this new instrument you are showing.

The problem with the extra Eb key is when it's implemented poorly. The Buffet solution in particular is an aesthetic disaster: it looks exactly like what it is: an afterthought that is just an ugly lash-up. It unbalances the look of the instrument (and makes it significantly heavier). Selmer do a much better job, where less metal is used, and the set of LH keys look like an integrated whole (I'm referring to soprano clarinets here, rather than bass). More practically, there is also a problem of placement: with many manuracturers the touchpiece is too high up the instrument, so that you easily hit it by accident when going for B or C#. Now, you can say "Oh, you'll get used to it", but the fact is that the existence of the Eb key inevitably means that the useable area for B/C# is reduced - with a greater likelihood of error when playing really rapid passages using those keys. And even the biggest fans of the extra Eb key would have to admit that they use B/C# a lot more than the extra Eb. So if you don't want core playability to be damaged for the sake of the occasional need for the extra Eb, then the key needs to be adjustable. Again, on Selmer this is possible as the extra touchpiece comes in from the side, so you can customise how far up the instrument it is placed and how much B/C# real estate you are personally comfortable in giving up. This is not possible with the Buffet design. So if I ever replaced my 1980-vintage Buffets with new ones, my first action would be to remove that key.

I know you probably won't see this, but could you do a review on the Anthem Bass Clarinet? Imma get one pretty soon, for rent, and need to know if it's good, or is a cheaply made, overly priced (~ $2,000 - $2,500) piece of junk.

I was taught to go in the order of mouthpiece into neck and peg on bell, bell on lower and neck on upper, marry the two joints, reed and ligature to minimize the amount of whole-instrument flailing that can cause unwanted collisions with stands, chairs, other players, etc. Is there anything wrong with that?
