If you struggle to get your characters to feel solid, or even human at all, it's probably because you don't have a base to build your anatomy on. Let's see how to use mannequins to understand to move a figure in space.

Probably the first lesson I've seen that wasn't the most Vague advice, or the most articulate tutorial at 2x speed
i am a noob, like noob noob regarding drawing. i've been watching videos to kinda grasp concepts and have a clear starting point. You, Sir, are, to this date, still the best video I've ever came accross. This video was a missing part of my own drawing journey puzzle, and I hope more people will come across your content because you deserve it.

I was having trouble drawing legs last night, and after doing some more inspecting into my drawing, I noticed that the proportions are a little off. Glad I found this video this morning. I'm going to start practicing more of the proportions. Thank you so much!❤

Thanks Nemo, you're amazing. I fin that this rule applies to all areas of art the more I delve into it: going from macro to micro is the key. When composing scenarios and paintings, for example, just blocking out the big shapes to get everything correct such as perspective, volumes, and colors, and then slowly rendering and adding more details little by litte is the way to go. The same goes for anatomy. We should focus on getting a very simple mannequin in the correct proportions and perspective, instead of trying to render a fully-fleshed out body.

Nemoooooo... You are the MAN! This is the mannequinization video that's gonna hit us as hard as Krenz Cushart hit you! Plus speaking of Krenz in your other video, I like the angle-to-the-viewer system he does. 0° 22.5° 45° 67.5° 90° Rotation is never arbitrary 👍😎

I have a question for the basic proportion lines, how do you measure the proportion if you draw the character in any other pose? (like sitting or crouching)
@theartofnemo
2 ай бұрын
Eh not really, that's why I said they should be as few as possible. You gotta eyeball and get a feeling for the other poses, especially when foreshortened
Me: tries to draw figures with the help of a book, after a bit better understanding of 3D... Also me: cant read all the orientation of books writers “dolls“ ... cant sleep at night because of thinking about what the f... hes doing wrong ;_; So... box people it is then i guess

I just started drawing like 2 days ago, is it alright to move to this even though I haven't fully grasped 3d shapes or perspective yet? I feel like if I practice this I'll learn those along the way as well, while also focusing on them for practice at other times. What do you think?

@theartofnemo

Bridgman is really hard to understand, I highly recommend doing mannequins first to get a sense of space :)
I guess I have trouble with different body types. Like the mannequin covers skinny people but like more buff people or fat people is kind of hard. Or I guess like the proportions of kids and stuff like that. Babies chibi type characters I guess.

Cool! Was there an issue with the zip?
3:15 Why does the ribcage look like that? The top of the box I get, as it's to illustrate the narrower shoulders of the female form. But why is the bottom part of the box smaller too, making the middle part the widest area? Why not just make the entire horizontal box narrower, like with the pelvis? What is the line in the middle supposed to indicate? Is there an angle change in between the front part of the chest area that's necessary to make distinct in this very simplified stage of mannequinization? Or is it just simply flat, and the pure front view is just making it hard to make that distinction clear? I honestly only ever gave the female mannequin a box like the male so far, so this is a bit to take in.
@theartofnemo
11 күн бұрын
Because it's not a ribcage, it indicates the breast too :D so it's coming towards us
So we are supposed to just ...eye ball the proportions? I really cant get hips roght at all
@theartofnemo
Ай бұрын
When you say can't get it right you mean size? Like with to height ratio? The thing is, if you do character design the ratio is really variable
@MALICEM12
Ай бұрын
@@theartofnemo like hips to chest ratio, head size, hand size, just kinda all of it other than the arm length
@theartofnemo
Ай бұрын
@@MALICEM12 Hmmm do you have discord? You can post your doubts on our server (art-feedback channel) and I can take a look. The only reason I mentioned not to focus too much on proportions is because it gets people confused, so eyeballing should be enough (or so I thought)
