Ethan I am not joking when you LITERALLY SAVED MY LIFE WITH THIS VIDEO. Over a DECADE I have struggled to understand poses and formulate my own, no matter how many Proko videos, gesture studies or advice I've received from friends regarding lines of action and etc, I COULD NOT understand how to make my own poses, or at least draw the ones from my head. The concepts you explained in this video blew my MIND. After watching, I went through some Disney videos and made the shape, and to my amazement, you weren't bullshitting and this wasn't some thing that only wrinkle-brained artists could understand. I made 2-4 new poses for each shape, including twisting and bending the body in dynamic angles - Holy DOGSHIT! Suddenly seeing the body basically broken down into this stupid pentagonal shape that I could make into whatever angle I wanted made everything click. It's like each thing I learned previously was a puzzle piece in my head, but there weren't enough pieces to finish the puzzle - this video was the missing piece. I'm so glad that you're proving this content for free, for all of us. Thank the LORD for Ethan.

    3 жыл бұрын

@@gforce3999 there is a way to use a right triangle to position the head from 3/4s behind to profile to 3/4ths forward facing. Just draw a loose downward pointing right triangle with the horizontal line being 2 units to the verticals 3. now if you put any line about 1 unit long vertically into the triangle you can imagine that as a line that connects your ear to your skull and the long side of the triangle then becomes a general the "jaw line". Because the ear more or less always divides the head you can use it as a guide you to form a face. If you put the "Ear" dead center you have a head in profile, move it towards the top of the triangle you tilt the head away from you. If you put the ear line towards the "jaw line" you tilt the top of the head towards you. If you put the ear closer to the "face line" you turn the face away from you, if you move it opposite the face turns toward you. It doesn't do all the steps for you but it does help to set everything up much like this technique Look up "How to Draw the Head / Face / Portrait with Steve Huston" he breaks it down far better then i can without visuals

Very grateful for ethans videos honestly. He makes a lot of things easier. I was in the slumps days ago, I haven't been drawing for months due to the number of tasks I have for school, and when I finally had the time to, it just didn't look right. I had studied anatomy before, but I had come to forget what they were. It was a dumb mistake I did. It's better to memorise a form through muscle memory first. Because formal knowledge such as anatomy only stays in the brain, it is only potential knowledge, but if unused for months you start to forget. Muscle memory on the other hand, I have found, stays. I thank this channel. Made me hopeful that I could become better than I was before :D

(like proko mentions, you cannot add secondary or tertiary details on a drawing without having the primary form down even in anatomy studies.) i am going to practice the heck out of this

These shapes are for understanding shape language and are used for "outside-in" anatomy studies (including bean), different artists have different ways of simplifying anatomy, to show gesture and motion. What Ethan explains here is good for animators, it doesn't mean that you shouldn't have understanding of bones and muscle groups. Sometimes we see artists simplify anatomy and we think that it's easy, cause it's just a simple shapes, right? No! You don't start your studies with final result, especially when you are a beginner. You must be aware of bones, because of the landmark points, you must be aware of origins and insertions of the muscles and how muscles change shape. Otherwise you are going to draw same characters over and over again and maybe you will even be avoiding to draw characters topless, or muscular. All I want to say is that foundation is important, that's what old masters used to do, I recommend to look up "Drawing Lessons from the Great Masters" they had same methods of simplifying shapes but they were aware of how bones and muscles work.
