Gesture Drawing Tips
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
My first advice to any aspiring artist is to get proficient at gesture drawing. Once you have a figure mannequin worked out, you need to play with it, and learn how it moves. Gestures are the fastest and best way to do that.

I always love David Finch work, so glad he runs a channel now
I think it's pretty incredible that I'm getting into gestural drawing again and hitting some snags, so I head over to your channel... and here's a video on gestural drawing. If I was an art teacher I'd be sending all my students to your channel. What you're presenting here is such a beautiful gift to the art and comic community. Thank you.
Honestly, this is my favorite part of the drawing process. Thanks for the video 🙏
Priceless information and a glimpse into a world that most artists never get a chance to see. Bravo! Thank you so much! All of your hard work on these videos is greatly appreciated!
Great video! I've recently decided to go back to the basics and learn how to gesture draw. It's so relaxing and freeing. It's such a fun way to squeeze in drawing time during a busy day.
Yes!! This is the exact video I needed, thanks, David. Would appreciate if you could make one on anatomy especially the forearms and stomach and and how the shapes change as the body moves.
Thanks so much David, this tutorial has been really helpful, since I'm writing a Graphic Novel, but also doing the panel layout and rough sketches of the panels to check how the script is gonna look . 😀👍
Thanks, David. I'm so glad I found this channel. Your figures look like Bridgeman's "wedging" construction. I'm a big fan of teaching with Bridgeman & Loomis, but especially Bridgeman bc I feel like the act of merely copying it is effective. If we get an artist who is weak on gesture or construction I make them copy Bridgeman 3x. It never fails to yield improvement. I think it's how he puts the figure in a box & makes u imagine it as lego type blocks & columns
Excellent information here and thank you for sharing. I like how you stressed the importance of drawing hands and creating a visual library just based on them, the idea that referencing everything is not efficient, and that sourcing from various artists is the thing to absolutely take advantage of in the times with the overloads of online information.
so glad I get to learn from one of the best! your videos are always an inspiration!
Thanks for all these tutorials David, you are one of my favorite artists i would never have imagined that you would upload this type of videos to KZread 😊❤️❤️
Thank you so much, David!! This was AWESOME! Really looking forward for the next tutorials!!
You have no idea how much this has helped me out
Fantastic study! And I couldn't agree more. Studying different comic books has helped me learn so many different dynamic poses. Especially when I have a complete blank on what to draw.
The thing i liked about this video is that it made me kind of more confident in my drawings. Great work

I'm working on improving my gestural figure drawing in order to create some character sketches for a novel series I'm co-authoring. I must've skimmed thru 10 videos are more before I came to this one.... and it stuck! I immediately pulled out my pencil and just started sketching multiple figures in different positions without really thinking about it... something I don't usually do! This is just the type of video I was looking for!
Thank you for uploading these videos and sharing your process with all of us! We really appreciate it especially since everyone’s in quarantine :))))

@@FarikoGalaxy looking at artists you look up to and trying to replicate their work to learn from their techniques is the ultimately fastest way to improve in my opinion. watching how the pros do it before doing it yourself is such a great method of learning that some people overlook because they think it's "cheating". i legit learned anatomy by doing nothing but watching Jim Lee's streams and looking at Yusuke Murata's hyper realistic bodies, and also managed to learn lineweight and crosshatching by looking at Kishimoto's manga panels, all by myself. I am a literal monkey in a human body, so if I can do it, you can probably do it twice. Stay strong my man, art is something that takes time and patience to learn. There's a reason for why people like Kim Jung Gi took 30+ years to get where they are right now - they didn't just come out of the womb knowing how to do perfect 5-point perspective, they had to learn it.

Thank you for showing your method, I found a lot of gesture drawing but a lot of them are very vague and more artistic than pragmatic (and my figure are already very "ethereal")

OMG ! David Finch has a KZread channel ! You are my inspiration sir. KZread seems to finally uping their recommendation game...
Let’s talk about that lead holder. This is something totally new to me lol. I find it amazing how effective the sharpeners are. I just started really getting into drawing. I’m 32 years old. Always had a passion. Got a sketch book and have been making sketches off of references mostly. My imagination is blank. Mostly doing dragon ball (I took a liking for anime but would love to expand once I learn more) Slow process but didn’t know about a lot of the amazing tools offered.
Thanks and keep them coming
I took your suggestion about looking around at people for reference. Last time I was in McDonalds I just looked around at people and studied their posture and the way the light and shadow informed their poses. I stayed for a good three hours and even used my phone to take a ton of photos so I could really study them at home and get in some good practice. It was great! I've got heaps of excellent reference and it will keep me busy for many, many hours. Unfortunately, I'm not longer allowed to go to McDonalds.🤣 Seriously though, thanks Dave; another great tutorial with practical and helpful tips. Much appreciated mate.

Great advice, I love quick gesture drawing. Its ideal for future reference. I have loads of sketch books with pages of poses. Then I have a few that on each page I deliberately made each page into a scene that I still use as reference/ideas. Great videos David.
