It makes me smile that you're eyeballing things instead of using all these crazy measuring tricks like in Scott Robertson's book. I used to overthink perspective so damn much when I first started, now it's a lot more intuitive and I can tell when proportions are off just from practicing

Studying perspective still helps you eyeball things though, so don’t neglect it. The more you study perspective, the more you will internalize it, which in turn helps you more easily and accurately eyeball something. At least it was for me, I’m nowhere near professional but when I first started drawing, I always tried to eyeball things thinking this is art and I shouldn’t need to measure things, my perspective was very off almost all of the time. After I started to study perspective, my eyebally drawings started to improve too.

@@pogz1 I started drawing characters about 3 years ago and practiced daily. Even a year will not be enough to learn to draw from scratch. In order to learn how to draw, you need to: 1. Be interested in drawing 2. Have inspiration 3. To study human inatomy, proportions and academic drawing in general. 4. Look closely at how other artists draw and take something from them for yourself. 5. (Not necessary, but it helps me) Listen to your favorite music while drawing. Dude I’ve truly never seen someone make perspective & foreshortening so simple & easy to fully comprehend, & non complicated! Most others get into so much mathematics & endless structuring, lots of complicated complexities, etc etc.. literally almost every other video I’ve seen makes it far more complex than it needs to be, & makes it kind of confusing in doing it that way.. you did the opposite! You did it exactly how I resonate with it the most & seemingly already understand it, but even simpler for me to comprehend parts that I’ve been getting tripped up on and frustrated with not being able to get down correctly. So thank you so damn much! Lol.. you have made this so easy to get all fundamental aspects of when it comes to this concept & area of art structure. You are genuinely such a good teacher with this stuff. I can’t begin to express my gratitude & appreciation for your videos like this, for parts of art/drawing (as an amateur manga artist) that I’ve been getting tripped up on. You are my go to guy! You’ve already helped me get past so many frustrating hurdles, it’s more of a help than you’d know lol. Thanks again my man👌🏻✌🏻

Unbelievable. That pythagorean trick is mindblowing for me, I've been trying to intuitively understand foreshortening to no avail, this reference gives such a great baseline where I had none before. Thanks a million man. Edit: I really cannot believe this. A 25 minute video demystified a concept I've been struggling with for a decade. Floored.

Hi, amazing tutorial! Although I am not a professional by any means, I would want to point out a few mathematical errors in perspective in case they would help anyone. Of course, as you said, measuring is generally overtaken by good intuition and you have good intuition. 1) At 3:00 , you rotated a box and said the vanishing points should move an equal length from their current vanishing points. However, in this case, the left vanishing point would move faster from its current vanishing point than the right vanishing point. For example, if you think of rotating this box towards an angle that directly faces us, one vanishing point would go towards the center of the page, and the other vanishing point would move to a point infinitely far away. 2) At 6:40 , you showed how to replicate a box using its diagonal. However, I think it should be noted that since these boxes' diagonals are parallel, they would converge on a new vanishing point (in perspective, all parallel lines not directly facing us would). The vanishing point here should lie on a vanishing trace (a vertical vanishing point) directly under the right vanishing point (not on the horizon). The standard method to do this would be to draw a line from one corner of the box to the midpoint of the opposite edge and extend it to the bottom/top edge of your new box. The lines will meet at the far edge of your new, identical box. (sorry, explaining is hard without diagrams) Once again, these ideas matter less for someone with great intuition and practice, but I still thought I'd share this information with anyone interested!

I love how you don't need a ruler to constantly draw, a real artist can eyeball it and use their skill to overcome those challenges.

You know what has made me curious lately. How the face foreshortens as it turns. I had never considered it before but it definately does. Also a dip of chin and forehead to show aggression does, and the closer to the camera the more extreme this is. And it can be used to show "immediacy". I was using foreshortening the other day to show a hand was in motion or reaching out. I'm sure its powerful in fight scenes too. Its a great tool so thanks for this vid and making it clearer how to foreshorten in an efficient way :) Much appreciated

From my experience thus far, perspective has made anatomy even easier. Spent the first few months mostly drawing cylinders & cubes. Went to draw faceless dudes & it's going smoothly.

Wow! What a great vdieo! In the beginning of 2019 I actually took a course on how to draw concept cars, and it helped me draw perspective lines well without actually doing a grid with a ruler. But for the buildings i still think the best way is to use the full grid like you do. Thanks so much for having such a great channel, it has helped my art in ways I could never imagine!
