The FINAL straw that made me QUIT my 9-5 job (& red flags) ❌

There were a lot of reasons WHY I quit my 9-5 corporate engineering job, but what was the final straw that made me quit my 9-5 job?
Today I’m explaining the three main reasons why I finally pulled the plug and quit my 9-5 engineering consulting job, as well as some red flags that I noticed at my 9-5 job before I quit.

Over the past year, I've learned that a lot of employers will not fill all of their open positions, then will act offended when you don't do the work of three people. I've decided I refuse to feel obligated to work on my days off, to kill myself to do extra work when there should be at least two more employees to help, etc.

They don't wanna pay people or give higher pay depending, it's complete bullshit, then they wonder why people are hesitant to go back to work, because there is a lot of jobs out there that are unfair and will work you to death for little pay or not enough pay, so you can be majority of the time a corporate servant, and that is just friggin evil and sinister as hell

I've witnessed good people leave because of bad management. People who are in management who know nothing about managing people. They drive their employees to the ground and talk down to them. So they leave. Having people skills is becoming a lost art. We are not dogs or robots..we are human beings and they have forgotten it.

Yes, a lot of management thinks "professionalism" means all employees must be impersonal workaholic robots. A lot of toxic owners and managers tend to be patronizing to those below. The more narcissist coworkers also focus on lateral patronizing attacks, inappropriately deeming themselves managers of their fellow coworkers as well. Chronic interruptions, aggression, fear-based tactics - gaining energy through theft of energy from others, not so capable of generating it within. Somehow sarcasm takes greater precedence than compassion in emergency scenarios now too.

I can tell you that last week working 5 days a week 9 hours each day, on that last day I had three fucking stress attacks, the last one I was laughing like a psychotic killer in a horror movie. And I got put back to 8-9 hours 5 days straight on the next two weeks so I know that I am going to have those stress attacks again, I know that I am going to have them, and into the 3rd, fourth day my body will start to get too stressed and my mental strain is gonna go back to that horrible concerning state that it was last week, and because I took off for three days they decided to do it as having one day off then peoceed to give me 5 days again, even though I was off at 2. Yet yesterday I can tell you that my body would not do anything, drainage is real, I am 23 and having this much stress and then feeling the real drainage that fucks my whole mental and physical up. I personally feel like that ages people faster.

I switched industries and one thing I realize is that many people spent their 20’s being burnt out and taking the brunt of lower level positions for a future “dream career” with no autonomy and simply do not care by their 30’s. Working in a field and talking to people makes you realize there is NO DREAM CAREER, especially for WOMEN. It’s all about money lifestyle and life balance in your 30’s. By your 30’s you have very little interest in being micromanaged and being a slave on other people’s schedule as well. They need to give people more money and autonomy.

Don't worry, you're not alone with what you did. I know 2 people where I'm at, one is a senior Finance manager who was earning $100k, he was stressed, working until 8pm, getting calls even on weekends, so he quit, he applied for regular jobs like cleaning, etc, but kept getting rejected because he was over qualified, until he found a 10pm to 6am McDonalds cleaning rostering, and gets paid almost just half of what he was getting before, but he can take his kids to school and spend more time with his family and he's not going back ever to that managerial position. The other one is an IT developer earning $120k a year, he quit and went travelling, and now he's just working a different job that's not related to IT and he's earning less as well, but pretty happy. If anything I would do the same thing because I'm stressed in IT. I want to be a builder of houses, or something fulfilling, doesn't have to be high salary, I don't care about the money but I just need to pay my mortgage, pay grocery and petrol, that's it.

For me this means you've rejected the lie of career first, and everything else second or third and so on. In my opinion, each of us must ask ourselves this question as we age, "Will I die well?" The question is answered through the legacy of our children. Do they choose wisely in terms of what's important in life, i.e., immediate family first, are they positive in society, and do our grandchildren repeat the cycle well?

I understand a lot of the issues with these corporate jobs. Esp in America and PTO. We all know “Unlimited PTO” is basically a trap lol but I actually had a pretty good salary and corporate job that I liked. They encouraged setting boundaries and we actually could use our unlimited PTO without the stress of judgment from managers or coworkers but maybe that’s because we were fully remote. But even with all that, I still quit my 9-5 to pursue freelancing and working for myself. It’s been 5 months now and I honestly don’t see myself ever going back to a corporate 9-5 hustle. Some people thrive on the corporate ladder and don’t mind doing anything and everything to get recognized or to make a higher salary. And that’s fine too. Just a reminder here that not everyone is going to be happier working freelance and not everyone is going to be miserable at a 9-5. You have to know what you WANT. I opted for freelancing because I cared less about making alot of money and wanted to focus on my quality of life and health. I now work maybe 20-30hrs a week and make half of what I used to but I’m 10000% happier.

I think my light bulb moment just came when you talked about trying to change everything about your life and health. I'm feeling the exact same way that I don't want to be in anyone's shoes here in 5, 10, 20 years. I'm very stressed because longevity was heavily discussed in my interview and seeing as how I've only been around 6 months, I am right on that edge where I'm deciding if I go to my boss and say something and risk being pushed out or try and exert all my remaining effort to overhaul the symptoms of my stress to make sure it's not just stress from being new. It's killing me. But I think you are right. I think if my health was perfect and all necessary changes were made, I still wouldn't like the situational aspect of this work. Not to mention, making those changes is now required because of the job and stress.

What bothers me the most is that you're the _only_ one not taking your holiday allowance. Everyone else just fricks off without warning you, and you're left holding the baby. The amount of times I've thought "I'll speak to X tomorrow" and their Out of Office is on for the whole of the next week - you talk to that person every day and they never warned you. Great job. Line management also just blithely approve everything without checking whether it's appropriate or reasonable based on what the rest of the team are doing. There is a certain point in the UK calendar year when all the schools are off and people take family holidays - that causes total carnage in the workplace to begin with, but then childfree people are also permitted to use that time? Come on. That is actively harming the company, nothing is getting done and this should be more tightly controlled.

I have watched a couple of your videos about quitting. I know that where I work now is not my forever job because I dream of becoming a video editor ( I have about 2 semesters left til I graduate) Yet I know the impact I have put into my current supervisor position has value. Since becoming a supervisor it has greatly impacted everyone around me in the company that I work for. I have tried to make change and bring fairness to all since becoming a supervisor but the other people in management don't want to be apart of the change I'm bringing to the table. My company has put management in management classes to help everyone. My biggest issue is the people that are managers should not be in the current position they uphold. It's frustrating that I know that I am doing everything on my part to make everyone a team but some people don't want to be team players. Everyday I have to step up to the plate and go out of my way for the process to not stop, but when someone is slacking, it effects everyone. And those people are being protected, favoritism. It's just hard to walk in with a mask everyday knowing that I am not happy, I am not myself, and no matter how much I complain or try to bring change. Nothing goes anywhere. I have mood swings I am constantly waking up with nausea and stomach aches. I over eat because I am stressed and find myself to comfort with food. I feel burned out. Yet I just came back from a vacation in May lol. I work with family too so its a constant world of my work is now being brought up at home. *It not like a family business or anything of that sort, fyi we all work in different departments lol. Along with that is that I am dating someone I work with the company. If I try to vent to family about work, then they turn around to make it seem like I am too sensitive.... At least my boyfriend is willing to listen but his approach to things is way different than mine. I am just finding it hard for someone to be on my side to understand. But now finding it hard to hangout with him because we work different schedules.

I love this series! 😊❤ Currently in the same situation… is there another video where you explain how you actually quit? I want to maintain my professional integrity, but I’m SO nervous and such a people pleaser.😩 I know it’s like ripping a bandaid off but we are low staffed, and our managers don’t even work near our district. I tried to push myself to stay for a year, but I’ve been hazed throughout training which is considered normal here. My mentor was the main perpetrator 😔 I moved alone across the country for this role and was totally shift-shook when I got here! 😅

  • @PaigeWestCo

I’m so sorry you’re going through that!😓 totally understand moving across the country for a role and not being happy in it.. I surprisingly don’t think I’ve ever actually talked about “how” I quit.. TLDR is I called the person who was our like regional manager somewhat. The company was flat structure so I asked around to figure out who I should call. I did it pretty abruptly on a Friday afternoon and put in a three weeks notice. I explained that my main reasoning was mental health and burnout but didn’t go into a lot of detail during that convo. Luckily the person I was supposed to notify was a woman so I felt pretty comfortable and ended up crying during the call lol (a little embarrassing but what can ya do). It ended up being a good thing though because they were so shocked by me quitting for burnout reasons that it sparked a lot of conversation with the company and I ended up having to do a lot of calls to talk about my experience. They were trying to understand what had happened so they could improve for future employees which I appreciated! For people I didn’t feel super comfortable giving the whole story at my company, I said I was leaving to take a break for awhile since I went straight into corporate after college with no buffer time (which was all true as well). They all understood and I had other managers keeping in touch and trying to convince me to stay! If there is anyone you feel comfortable discussing it with then start by talking to them! Even if it’s just someone in a similar role to you! Talking it through with other employees helped me feel so much more valid and gave me the courage to finally put in my notice! Well this ended up really long but I hope it was helpful! I’ll have to make a video on this topic in the future! Wishing you the best of luck❤️

I worked in collections for a big telecom company for a while and after 2 emotional roller coasters of being laid off and re-hired, having micromanage-y supervisors, lack of training but still expected to produce results, being openly shamed in a weekly meeting for not meeting goals and grilled on why (along with 30 other people.. what a waste of time.) I started to see the effects on my health. I couldn't sleep. I could barely eat without getting sick. I was stressed all the time. When I wasn't working all I did was think about work. I lost 10lbs per month for 3 months. I came close to committing suicide. And I finally just... quit. The effects of the job weren't just affecting me but also bleeding into my family life as I couldn't destress. I didn't have a backup and my husband didn't support me quitting, even if it was obvious I was becoming very sick from the job. Which led to more problems after I quit. But once everything calmed down, it took me months before I was able to go back and look for something. And it only got better once I did quit. Never again. LOL

You have to understand that here in Europe it's not possible for a toddler to earn six figures and for a 23 year old to buy a 7-person family home for the price of a Starbucks Latte. But that seems to be totally standard in the US. You have college graduates living in Asscrack South Dakota working as software engineers, earning more than a middle-aged and experienced senior engineering director would earn in London. Your trainee nurses earn more than qualified British doctors. I could go on.

At one point during that period I had an additional 2 'dotted line' bosses. My team went from 10 people with 10+ years at the company and industry to 6. Only 2 of the original 10 are left, the rest are new hires. Work has become a toxic politics match because of the big personalities they brought in to manage the company. Nobody, not a FUCKING SOUL can tell me what my job is anymore or what my tasks are because our management simply is in such chaos at all times that they can't agree on basic roles & responsibilites. Quite literally you have to inject insane amounts of caffeine into your system to summon the will to live your life of voluntarily climbing into the dumpster that is on fire to get your paycheck.

Applying Missed aligned pressure in order to stay connected to tasks for the soul purpose to deliver a project that has the ability to change a delivery date … will always result in dissatisfaction. Dissatisfaction is a direct result of misaligned pressure. (Either External or Internal or both) Which will ultimately expose the companies poor processes & the frustration of being able to successfully rely on those whom should be working with you. Sinking Ships are not aware that there are live viable human beings onboard. The ship however thrives on the basis on team work, healthy mindful decisions, discipline & the human basic understanding that rest keeps stress at bay. Doubling Down on Pressure will ultimately lead to a path of nothingness … because doubling down doesn’t produce a humane existence.

Our time is already a major sacrifice for a job, our mental and physical health absolutely should not be getting worse from a job. Your place sounds so much like mine. There's this extra benefit for employees that may be suffering from autoimmune diseases or such. It's a extra paid benefit where a employee can call in and basically say they are having a flare-up and can request a fmla day and it not count against them .Their job is 💯 protected. However, 95% of our employees have it and abuse it They can pretty much call in as many times as they want. . A handful of us don't have it and are the ones forced to cover for these people. They usually call in when it's a busy day or they just don't want to come in. Happens every week and burned out being overloaded w work I I can't finish and here I am 1 day short of being terminated cause I was hospitalized. Seems very unfair. The worst part is that these are employees that are constantly arguing w management, getting written up, refusing to do work, and complaining about the type of work they get.

I’ve been punished at several jobs for taking a vacation. I accumulate my PTO and take long trips. That is a no no in the companies I was at.

Its not that my employer is particular bad, but the final straw for me in the corporate world, on top of everything, was hearing once again - 'All-directorate staff away day...' No other combination of words can be as deflating as those. I'm now actively looking into the world of self employment.

why do companies NOT train managers how to be managers? People get promoted becuase they are good on the tools or they stay long...then they are on the tools less and now made to manage peopple and they have no idea or training to do so!!!

My boss talks me to work on my rest day and compare me to our new hire who works on our rest day with no pay. She say this is molding me as a manager, I get that but I'm still not a manager so you must pay me . Plus she expects those on vacation, sick or rest day are expected to be online anytime. no rest at all and I felt that this is totally wrong.

@@PaigeWestCo Yeah. I'm passing through something similar. I entered in an I.T. Company that promised me training and they just left me behind for at least 6 months. One member of the team sometimes mistreat me. Right now i'm doing some online courses to prepare for leaving and feeling kinda crushed.

That sounds rough, I wouldn't want a job where they didn't respect planned PTO.

Real managers that want to make a difference give support to their employees instead of using punitive measures all the time. The least competent ones in my experience are usually the ones that never get involved with your projects. Egregious apathy for extended periods of time. They turn a blind eye to your needs, but when the problems come their way, they require you to deal with them.

Or like for me in my company they send for holidays only then when there is the least work to do or when they are themselves going for holidays so they could like when a holiday in your holiday but instead better would be when a holiday you working when it back from holidays you then going holidaying and you go holidays on the most busy days not on the summer when there's you know nothing to do and you can just sit and enjoy
