The Montage is 10 yrs ahead in the technology curve but still the Kronos is the BEAST. The workflow is very convoluted in the Kronos as it was in the M3 and the Triton before that and a huge learning curve for the average musician. If the Kronos even today simplifies and optimises it interface, includes a phrase / pattern sequencer, it can blow even today's flagships out of the water.

Ok, so I bought a few of the 'Favorite Covers' libraries for my Yamaha Montage synth, mainly because there is some good programming already done in the patches/Performances, and I want to save some time not having to program all of my Performances from scratch, where possible. I just checked out 'Favorite Covers 2' and it's quite well done overall. I was mainly looking for 'The Final Countdown' patch from that one (as is demoed in the 2nd half of this video above), although I will likely use Hungry Like the Wolf & the Cold Play patch as well. There were a few tweaks that I needed to make though, just in case any Montage/MODX owners buy this library and want to make it closer to Europe's original version. I was a bit surprised that PART6 had the Montage Preset waveforms 'XP Brass' down so low in volume & not up more as the main sound you here since that waveform is a perfect sample of the 'Stab Brass' voice from the Roland JX-8P synth that Europe's keyboard player uses for that main brass sound (layered with multiple unison FM brass sounds). Europe's version is somewhere between Narfsound's Montage & Kronos patches for that main brass sound. So, I brought the amplitude levels up on the Elements 1 & 2 'XP Brass' waveforms of PART6 (to 127 & 64 respectively), and it now sounds much closer to Europe's synths for that particular Main Brass sound. The other thing I noticed is that the D#2 note of PART4 is too loud, so I brought the volume of it down. The next thing I tweaked was PART8, which makes up part of the Ooo voice sound at the end of the intro. The 'Syn Vox' waveform in Element2 has too much whisper sound in it and not quite enough Ooo, so I added the 'F Huh Loud' waveform to Element3 to add more Ooo, brought the Ins A 'VCM EQ 501' effect's high shelf (EQ 5 Gain) down a bit on that PART8, and then took down the Amplitude Level of Element2 'Syn Vox'. Also, I enabled Portamento on both PART7 & 8, setting them to 'Fingered' with Time '52' and Time Mode 'Rate 1', since Europe's keyboardist is using Portamento on that sound. So, now I think the patch/Performance is very close to Europe's various synth sounds in that song, especially the main Stab Brass intro part & the Ooo voice sound. One final tweak that I haven't done yet, but definitely will be doing. I plan to take the Reverb send level down a bit on some of the sounds/PARTs, change the Variation send effect to be a 'single' Delay, and send the Main sound (PARTs 5 & 6) Var Send to it so that it has the same amount of delay effect that Europe's keyboardist is using...something that is missing in the 'Favorite Covers 2' patch. I may increase the Chorus Insert effects on some of the PARTs to make up for the lost additional chorus effect from the originally programmed Variation Effect, but only if necessary when comparing to Europe's original recording... Seeing as how the Montage/MODX have both a sample based engine and an FM-X engine, it's almost like they were custom built for this particular song since Europe's keyboard player is using a Roland JX-8P layered with a Yamaha TX816 FM rack-module. Looking at how I probably would have programmed that main sound if I did it myself from scratch, I would have used just the Stab Brass sound preset 'XP Brass' as a single Element in PART6 via the sample based engine with the 'Symphonic' Ins A effect, and I would have found the right FM-X engine (DX7) Brass sound, copied it to PART 5, then added a lot of the 'Symphonic' Ins A unison layering effect (6 layers) as well as EQ'd it for some fullness if necessary, and added the digital delay (single repeat) with a bit of reverb. Overall, this library and it's 'The Final Countdown' patch/Performance in particular, has saved me a great deal of time in programming, as it was much quicker to just tweak it since most of it was already there anyway & fairly well programmed too!

Kronos of course. Thats´s why I have two of them. One at home and one in the rehearsel room. :-) Also have a MODX 7 and it is great, but if the Montage sounds like MODX, well! Kronos has much better organs, Leslies, brass, pianoes etc. But together they are a beast.

@reno78ful I have had a Kronos from 2012 and have bought 2 more since... I'm also the admin for the Kronos Enthusiast Workshops group on facebook so, admittedly I'm a bit biased. I'd say it's the best out there is the Kronos as it is a full workstation and the Montage is not. The Kronos has got the 9 synth engines, sequencer, audio hard-disk recorder, sampler, Karma and wave sequencing. And the best implemented Set List mode on any keyboard. The Montage is a top notch sample playback synth and a modernized FM synth with a myriad of control options. Not exactly in the same category as the Kronos but an excellent synth nonetheless.

Hey @bigmarxbeats I wonder when the consumers are going to realize this info you've shared here...the manufacturers are quite happy. I don't see them aggressively attacking each other's instrument. If you check it out, some of Yamaha samples are in that same Kronos, especially from the DX-7 era. Summary: the manufacturers collaborate more than we think...

Currently I'm on a Korg M3-XP with all added RAM and the additional sound module (EXS i think it was). But the keyboard got old and I will buy a new one next month. I'm struggling between the Montage oder the Kronos and barely can't decide. I would go for the 73 keys version for each of them. Do you guys have some help? With the Kronos i would have the advantage, that I'm used to, at least a little bit, the UI. But I really don't know. Heaven help :-)

I'm sure you've likely already bought your new keyboard; however just in case you didn't, I had a similar struggle a few years back trying to decide between the Kronos and Montage. It was the Kronos guys on the Korg forum that convinced me that the Montage was more suited for what I wanted to do, because the Kronos polyphony is based on the lowest common denominator engine being used, whereas the Montage doubles the polyphony when adding the second engine. My use case is to sequence all the backing music and play most of the keyboard type sounds (piano, synth, pads, strings, etc.) live on the keys. They felt I would hit polyphony limits trying to do everything on one single keyboard (depending on what engines I used on the Kronos). So I bought the Montage and I have yet to have a note drop off with all 16 sounds playing at once. ;)

Kevbo Kev you cant have the exact same files though as each synth has its own sample set and each have their own methods of synthesis. Signal and effects processing are different and ultimately, the hardware is different. They will never sound exactly the same.

It’s not even in the same ballpark. You Yamaha fanboys need to play them side by side or just come to terms with your cognitive dissonance.
