The Fight of Legends.. Earnie Shavers vs Larry Holmes
Спорт
In this epic showdown, two colossal forces collided: Shavers' incredible power and Holmes' surgical precision.
Shavers, renowned for his devastating punch, unleashed blows that seemed capable of demolishing any opponent. But Holmes, highly regarded for his technique and ring intelligence, had no intention of simply absorbing the punishment. He countered Shavers' immense power with a solid defensive strategy, effectively neutralizing the destructive force.
This fight became a memorable symbol of the clash between strength and skill in boxing. Both fighters made their mark on the heavyweight division during this era, and their battle remains one of the most intense and unpredictable encounters in the world of sports.

Unsure what it is to be honest, one of my other favorite channels, the modern martial artist, is having the same issues. I think it’s KZread recommendations being stupid again :p Maybe use the community posts to announce your new videos? That seems to help subscribers find videos for other channels! Thanks for the great videos, love your fight highlights!
Larry Holmes is a classic example of somebody they gets judged by how he was late in his career. A lot of people forget this Holmes they only remember the flabby Larry in his mid to late 30s. This Larry Holmes was one of the greatest heavyweights ever. His straight, crisp, punches and hand speed were remarkable from a man his size. He was amazingly technical for a guy 6’3 over 215 pounds. His jab is right up there with Ali and Liston as the best ever. He is a tragically underrated fighter.

WHAT MANY PEOPLE NEVER MENTION IS THE FACT LARRY HOLMES SPENT MANY YEARS BEING A SPARRING PARTNER TO MANY CHAMPIONS,CANT UNDERSTAND WHY HE NEVER FOUGHT FOR A BELT,THIS IS WHY HE PUNISHED ALI YEARS LATER,MANY SAY HE TOOK A LIBERTY,THAT IS THE ONE REASON WHY MIKE TYSON TOOK A LIBERTY WITH HOLMES, BECAUSE ALI WAS TYSONS GREATEST MENTOR,BEFORE THAT FIGHT BEGAN ALI WALKED OVER AND SHOOK TYSONS HAND, IT IS SAID THAT ALI UTTERED THE WORDS "SORT HIM FOR ME SON", TYSON LOOKED AT ALI AND NODDED HIS HEAD , THEN FLATTENED HOLMES, WHICH GIVES CREDENCE TO ALI'S 'WHISPER' TO MIKE TYSON; I,MYSELF,BELIEVE IT TO BE TRUE!!

I agree. I grew up watching him back then. He picked guys apart at will, and he was precise and slick. That jab he had was a laser. Holmes just wasn’t flashy and charismatic in personality. Old school, hard working tough dude. I was a big fan of Holmes when I was growing up.

there are no heavyweights today that compare to the fighters of this era

Shavers is like a tank with the biggest bore cannon.
Holmes would present a difficult match up for any Heavyweight champion going back to John L Sullivan. He possessed all the tools a champion needs to have to dominate the division for as long as he did. Holmes had a superior ring IQ, excellent footwork, hand speed second to none and could take a punch and had an ability to recover after being hurt as he shows in this video.Larry was a master boxer and sharpshooter but also could brawl with the best of them when necessary. His adaptability was amazing and often an overlooked asset. Holmes was as complete as any Heavyweight champ in history and possibly the most well rounded and complete, physically and mentally ever. Respect.

@@rgkgamedogs5345 There's just no way to prove it. Ali in his prime was in an extremely weak era, with the best being the likes of Sonny Liston and Floyd Patterson. And the difference in level between these fighters were absolutely massive. The only guy that was comparable to Patterson was Ingemar Johansson. And the gap between them and other boxers was massive. Ali shined when he beat them all including Sonny Liston. Sure. But what's even more impressive, and makes Ali the Goat, was that he also made a bunch of wins while out of prime, with his most shocking and impressive win over George Foreman when everyone thought the young powerful Foreman was going to stop Ali. The second part of his career was about as golden as it gets. Ali fought with killers far more challenging than the era when he was in his prime. I don't think there's enough information to say whether Ali or Holmes would've won. Prime v prime. Who would win between Ali and Holmes? It's hard to say.

@@emin62bek Chin you have to give to Holmes.. 185-pound Cooper almost knocked Ali out.. Little Sonny Banks (191) had Ali down.. and little 205-pound Frazier had Ali down and also had him hurt in the 11th.. Those were all in Ali's prime... Holmes recovered quickly from the Shavers kd, and he was a noted hitter who did nothing to Holmes in their 1st encounter.. Holmes was an old man and very ring rusty when Mike Tyson, one of the hardest punchers ever, and 215 pounds, put him away.. Snipes was 216, another big Heavyweight for his day, and caught Holmes on the end of a straight right. Stamina goes to Holmes... Ali often had to lay on the ropes to recoup his wind... You seldom saw Larry resting, grabbing, and taking a break. Hand speed has to go to Homes as well.. Doug Jones out-sped Ali.. Young out-sped Ali.. Norton out-sped Ali.. and obviously Holmes easily out-sped Ali Ali's ring IQ couldn't match Holmes'... At 42 Holmes had enough skill and savvy to easily beat Ray Mercer... When Ali's physical gifts deteriorated he couldn't fall back on his knowledge and creativity as much as Holmes could. Holmes had the best jab... His first fight with Shavers he did much better and never really got hit. But after the Norton fight---where Holmes tore up his left biceps badly---he could never retract his jab with the same lightning speed and was vulnerable to right hand counters... Eventually he adapted, but when you lose that rubber-band snap it's never quite the same.. Ali got outjabbed by Young, Jones, Norton, and even Cooper hit him with jabs where he would never get one on Holmes. Ali's right lacked fire power.. Light Heavyweight Doug Jones said Ali "couldn't crack an egg."..Jones nailed Ali hard with rights. Ali didn’t nothing to him. Foreman didn't drop from Ali's right, any more than he dropped from Young's right.. He dropped from exhaustion both times.. Don't tell me about the phantom punch. Liston got up without a count and the referee screwed him.. Holmes knocked Alfredo Evangelista cold with a right and Ali couldn’t do crap to the guy with his best shots.
Holmes later said about the knockdown that shavers actually hit him too hard which is why when he hit the canvas it made him wake up
Holy carp... Larry's jabs are insanely quick.
People don’t have a clue on the kind of natural punching power Shaver’s had possessed and he is singlehandedly the reason why many of the heavyweights of that day could hardly be understood long after they’re careers were over. He was leaving guys brains 🧠 unplugged way after they got up after the ten count. While this guy continued to speak perfect English with his UK accent. Everybody from Ali to Forman said, he could crack like no other.

One of those legendary fights. Both boxers gave all they had, but it was Shavers who took more than he gave. He didn't lose the fight, Holmes won it. And I feel that Holmes never got the recognition he deserved as the heavyweight champion.

If Shavers had just kept his wits instead of swinging wildly after he knocked down Holmes, history might have been different.

This fight is why Holmes is one of the greatest heavyweights of all time. His fighting spirit rivals Holyfield.
What a champ Larry was,my God!
Shavers said he never hit anyone harder than he did Holmes in that 7th round. Holmes went down so hard that it woke him up when he hit the canvas.
Shavers was dangerous to anybody and everybody, if he could connect with that right. Holms was better than a lot of people gave him credit for. He was really tough right here, whatever anybody says. Outstanding comeback from the knock down.
Amazing to watch not just Holmes' control, Shavers' figuring out a way to win, but the punishment these men took to get the win!

It's weird to think someone was just supposed to "fill Ali's shoes"... like that's POSSIBLE!!!
Larry giving an interview to Cossel while being at his barber.
Levantarse luego de ese derechazo y terminar noqueando no lo hace cualquiera, lo hace un verdadero campeón, lamentablemente el reinado de Holmes estuvo siempre en la sombra del recuerdo de Ali...

The Holmes-Shavers fight is conclusive prove that although Holmes was an excellent heavyweight boxer, he was not as great as Ali, Frazier, Louis, Dempsey, Marciano and possibly Johnson. Shavers protected himself superbly throughout the fight. Shavers blocked a lot of Holmes' best punches with excellent defense. Holmes threw many more punches than Shavers in the fight but never really hurt Shavers in that fight.
