The Fiat-Abarth Zagato is a Mille Miglia Marvel

As an enthusiast who has run the modern Mille Miglia five times, Carl Gustav Magnusson didn’t have to think long about which car he wanted when he began planning his sixth run. In his previous five races, each driven with a different family member by his side, Magnusson had piloted a Fiat Abarth Zagato 750 GT Corsa, a car that more than makes up for its small stature by packing a whollop of pedigree, performance, and noise. Magnusson thus went looking for, and found, his current “double bubble” which, like its predecessor, has served as a passport to the golden age of road racing.
For three decades and twenty-four races, the Mille Miglia was among the most grueling races anywhere on the planet. From 1927 to 1957, racers from around the world tore across a thousand Roman miles of Northern Italy, drawing millions of spectators and making GT sports cars from Ferrari, Porsche, Maserati, and Alfa Romeo-among other marques-famous. A pair of fatal crashes in '57, however, put the kibosh on the Mille Miglia.
In 1977, the event was revived as a vintage rally and the roads between Brescia and Rome were once again alive with the scream of racing engines. Cars eligible for entry in this modern-day event are those from which at least one vehicle took place in the original race, making Magnusson’s car among the last eligible models produced. Quick and tough, it’s easy to see how these cars placed second in the 750cc class in the 1956 Mille Miglia and won that class in 1957.
For Magnusson, the Mille Miglia is months away, but he isn’t letting this car sit idle: he drives it several hundred miles each month, blasting through the local canyons before the sun is even up, all to ensure that the car doesn’t forget that it was meant to race.

Being 19 I'd rather see these cars being driven instead of in a museum with a plaque that says what it is. I'd rather see and hear it drive by and have a smile put on my face

At first I thought you where an older person who didn't like young people. I think it's important too that young people like us are interested and in classic cars like this because we'll be more likely to want to own a classic car someday. I had the chance to buy a BMW 3.0CS that needed a little work, mostly some tuning with the triple carbs, some repairs to the leather seats and some rust on the body. I like modern cars too because their so fast, but it's still really cool having a classic car, they have more character than new cars

Bryan Doherty You had the chance to own an E9?! your mental for turning it down , i mean it may be a bit difficult to get it finished with ur budget being so young , im a 20 year old e24 owner ( 633CSi) and i absolutely love the car!

I used to own a 1959 Fiat Zagato Abarth. It was the most fun car I have ever driven. It was purchased by my father and grandfather from their local physician when he could no longer get in it. It was then given to me. I ended up selling it to a guy in San Francisco when I couldn’t find parts for it. This brings back some great memories from my youth!
The last few films have had a 'different' feel - this film feels like a return to form.

That includes the modern Abarth, future classic.
First time I saw this car was 1970 in Hollywood and wanted one immediately. I didn't know what it was then, but wanted one and was told later it was an Abarth Zagato. The Fiat part came later. I remember how cool I thought the roof looked. The car combines some lines from Porsche, Alfa and Ferrari. Beautiful Italian classic.
At 4:20. Did anyone notice the oil blow by collector can? It looks like a sauce can or something. hahah
if i lived in the same area as him i would love to hear it start up in fact i would pay him to use the engine as my alarm clock to get me up in the morning

The 5-95 looks more like Zagato leafed through Italdesign reject concepts. I think the last productive thing Zagato did was the 09' 550 GTZ Barchetta.

Ferrari built 448 Barchettas. Zagato used 5 to make the GTZ Barchetta. Those are some seriously rare little boats. I've been around a few 550 Barchettas and have caught the DB7's Zagato did, so I'm sure that treatment is superb in person. Zagato have a way with the topless.

Beautifull engine sound it's one of those cars to loose yourself in the open road all Day... Love the interiors design and materials besides the body is so advanced for the time it was built...
My father used to campaign one of these in the late 50's early 60's.
Mille Miglia Marvel is now my favourite alliteration.
I would sign just everything said here by the owner of this unbelievably wonderful Abarth, but would not on his opinion on 'boxy' eighties design. That 'boxy' design he's picking on has a lot of history with Bauhaus, and brought us countless classics, most of them designed by legendary italian designers. To name a few: Audi Ur-Quattro, Lancia Delta, BMW E30, Mercedes Benz 190E, Fiat Panda, VW Golf, etc., etc., etc. There is simply not a more perfect car design than the E30, it is flawless, and everybody in business agrees here. And all this leaving a classic such as this 750 GT untouched by the fact.
I had a later model 750 GT Record Monza (not the double bubble). It was a sweet machine.

And the best bit is that, as mentioned, this car is based of the platform and engine of the fiat 600, as was the fiat 850 which replaced the 600. Both the 600 and 850 are affordable and could have their engines modified to be as good if not better than the one in this 750 GT, and as the platforms are similar, light modification to the 600 or 850 could yield similar handling aswell. Off course they wouldn't look the same, but they'd be very close in terms of driving and sound, the 850 coupe is great to look at anyway, and they'd be a fraction of the cost.
Im amazed how you almost see more of these rare cars in the USA than in Europe.

I had the ability to sit in a "Double bubble." The owner let me fiddle with the seats, feel my way around the interior and to be honest I've liked fiats more ever since.
these cars are an enginering marvel, any change not done in the spirit of these cars only destroy them

I feel the same way about my 1975 Fiat X1/9. Abarth OT130 engine detuned for Fiat by Lampredi. Coachwork by Gandini while at Bertone. A little Lambo of sorts.

I had a 75 and 76 X-1/9 plus a 124 Spyder. The X 1/9 handled better than almost every car I've had since.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, one mans trash is another's gold. If that's what he likes doing, and how he likes to do it then who are we to question that. I would never personally want to own his car as much as he would probably not want to own mine, but each to their own. If we weren't different then this community would be boring. Nice looking car, but it has horrible fiat pushrod engine. Not sure can it even be called an engine. I had fiat 127 with the 900cc version and that is just horrible.
