The fermented suint method

Cleaning raw wool using no more than water and warm weather (and a large container with lid). As both a brewer, and a soap maker, I had quite a kick out of this project! Fermenting soap to clean wool, who wool-da thought!
For our SCA peeps: It is not entirely clear if this method was used in period. There is little evidence for methods used to begin with, apart from using urine in especially Roman times, and there is nothing for, or against, using this one. It seems a very self-evident method to use at it is so low in material and effort, eccept for the use of a large container. It has been postulated that access to large vats might have been the problem preventing earlier people from using this method (I would not want to re-use anything that has been used for this either), same as limited access to large kettles limited general brewing volume. It is my thought that similar types of vats as used for processing hides, as well as dyeing both hides and wool, could have been used. Still in use in less developed countries, lime lined pits should work just as well for soaking raw fleece as it would for dyeing it. But until we have proof, all this is just conjecture :)
If you do know more about the early history of suint, please share!

I feel that sectioning off a bit of pond or creek water (like a kid making a baby pool on the riverside) is very feasible and would leave very little evidence archaeologically.

Thank you! I have a large black trash bag full of fleece. I've been skirting it for over a week. I've placed all the fleece with dags aside. I may try this fermentation method. I'll wait until the ground isnt frozen and we have wark days😇👍 I have pallets for drying as well. I appreciate your video

Thanks for sharing this intersting method! Do you need to put a lid on or does it work without a lid as well? How long would you recommend to let it sit? Could a couple of days in warm weather also be okay? How can you see it's done?

A dark lid is essential! Keeps out egg laying insects AND leaving the suint in the dark so no algae grows.

once it is dry? I process it into roving, or use it as the core of felted dryer balls.

If it isn't crazy is it really worth doing? haha. Wish I had space for this kind of fleece cleaning but the neighbors would NOT appreciate it I think. Will have to stick with hot water and detergent.

I live in an area with bears. Is this so smelly that it might attract them? For the record, we cant leave trash outside without fear of bear carnage.
