The Father of all Mitsubishi World Rally Cars: 1977 “Dodge” Mitsubishi Colt/Lancer

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Mitsubishi has been in the rally game for a long time… like, 60s/70s long time. And this right here is part of the lineage that ended up taking the “Lancer” name from being synonymous with a grocery getter to being known as a titan in tarmac and gravel stages around the world. Dennis Aquino’s super clean and period-correct example keeps that lineage alive, still being driven to and on the racetrack.

I bought one of these with blown engine for $50 and put a japanese stock replacement engine in it and new clutch, tires, radiator, wheel bearings, etc. It got 40-45 mpg on the highway. Unreal gas mileage. Drove from San Fran to Tahoe on 1/2 a tank of gas. The manufacture claimed highway mpg was only 28-30 mpg, which I always thought was weird that it was so underrated.

Larry Chen, videos of even the most tame builds are worth watching thanks to your superior camera work. And this owner/builder/shop owner is rad...not only funny but no b.s. when it came to discussing the (albeit low) power figures (e.g., the turbo engine being built of the green 'Yota, it sounded like he wanted to say something in the 'four' range but then reeled it in to the threes. No bull.) As always, thanks for the killer content & cheers.

This episode reminded me of my '73 Dodge colt I used to own back then. With a 1.6 lt.Saturn engine and I installed a 5 speed trans from a Lambda car. It runs so good and I missed that car. However, this lancer has a 1.4 lt. Astron engine here in PI. Remembered driving one when I was a teenager. This episode brought fond memories during my teenage years and my old 2 dr. Dodge colt. About 15 years ago I had a four door '78 Dodge Colt that I bought from the sketchiest dude for $300. I never registered it, we used it to drive around the back alleys every now and then for a laugh, and eventually I sold it on to cover rent a few months later. It was pretty fun, the PO put long spring shackles on the rear to lift it, he said otherwise it would bottom out on bumps if people sat in the back seat. It had an old school fiberglass racing seat for the driver for some reason, despite being otherwise stock so far as I can remember. I kind of wonder who has it now.

This brought a lot of memories of my dad. Buying a 1974 Dodge Colt. Because his MG was getting up there. And it was hard start in the cold. So plus his Ford Galaxy was too much on gas. So he sold them both. And went to Brookfield Dodge. And bought a brand new 1974 Dodge Colt. In 1976. We moved from Massachusetts. To Texas from Texas to Hawaii. And I was watching sports car racing. On the World Wide of Sports. And they had the race from road Atlanta. And they had a Dodge Colt. In the GTU class she ran well. But she lost her engine. Then about a week later they had the East African Safari Rally. And they had the Lancer. And my dad was watching with me. And I said Daddy. There is our car. Sadly the car lost the reverse. And she began to rust. And daddy sold her. To a body man. And he fixed her. I dont know if survived. But in 1977 I became a rally fan. And a sports car fan. Sadly Daddy is gone. And I am a man of a certain age. And a dad and a grandad too. And still a rally car fan. And Sports car fan. Not only of the IMSA Sports Cars Series. But also the Michelin Pilot Series. I hope you do a video. On the Meyer-Shank Acura GTD. And L.A Honda World cars. Thanks for the video Sven Thanks for the memories.

Mitsubishi Lancer GSR I rember being in the Forest south of a place called Taree during the Southern Cross Rally in Australia during the 1980's when ex Mitsubishi Rally Legend Andrew Cowan dropped out of the event because the driveshaft broke in the VW Golf he was driving at the time. Well what an awesome hour or so watching cars go past and talking to Andrew before we both moved on and I remember Andrew saying he had around a dozen or so of the rare Mitsubishi Twin Cams back in Scotland on his Farm lon with an assortment of Works parts like Diffs, Suspension Gearboxes LSD's and many works engine parts, Would have loved seeing his Barn. I knew about the Twin Cam Mitsubishi engines back then as I had a couple of customers with Galant GTO models imported from Japan with these engines, I myself have had Twin Cam Corolla models including the TE27, TE37 and AE 86 two being 2TG Engines and the later the 4AGE. You have great content about cars that I remember from an earlier time in life

The first car i raced here in the US on Dirt track was a 78-83 Dodge Challenger/Plymouth Saparo. RWD 2.6l Mitsubishi engine. All worked up, headers etc.. Was the best car i ever raced. Wish i had kept the motor. I have pics if interested.

A heap of people I know had these in Australia. My best mate had a rally car version. Full cage, webers, big suspension. He used to send it on big speed humps! Then he'd drive it to gigs with our band. Kurtsweil keyboard hanging out the window coz the car was too small to fit it inside. LOL

My dad has had his Colt Galant since 86. One thing I gotta say about the car is it's bulletproof. Its been running forever the odometer even stopped working.

I had 2 76 Dodge Colts in 85, 86. I drove from Mn to San Diego. It got 35 mpg. You could drive 40 MPH in a snowstorm and pull the ebrake, get it spinning and gas it to pull of a 360 never leaving your lane. I love that car.
