Also when I read in german I do try to translate every little word i dont know, idk when I learned english and french i didnt need to translate every word in a sentence to understand it but with German i really feel like i dont fully understand whats being said unless i know every word and thats also been helping me expand my vocabulary so there is that 🤷🏽‍♀️

    ESL teacher and a multilingual here. My advice to my students is always to incorporate the language you want to study on things you like. The absolute best thing is watching movies in that language WITH SUBTITLES ALSO IN THAT LANGUAGE. When you watch something while reading subs, you'll automatically read in harmony with the speaker. This will improve your reading, writing, listening, and speaking. Yes, at first it'll be extremely frustrating since you'd have to pause and translate often. But there's no shortcut to increasing vocabulary. But trust me it's so much easier today since you can translate on your phone. Back then i had to get up and look at physical dictionary and dictionaries don't have a section for expressions or informal words. This method is tough, but you'll improve dramatically fast! AND you'll be doing something you like anyways to reduce the frustration.

    Linguistics major here - he is definitely not wrong. The most important part of fluency is practice and exposure. By forcing yourself into a target language environment you will inevitably pick up on stuff (start with small things like changing your phone settings to your target language). And by speaking (doesn't matter how bad your grammar is, just mumble to yourself during the day) you will accustom yourself to forming phrases and in no time you'll feel the language as the flexible living fluid that it is. Edit because so many people seem to misunderstand what I meant: I'm mot talking about learning a language, I'm talking about the ways of achieving _fluency_ while speaking and understanding it.

    Hello I am interested in possibly being a linguistics major and researcher. Do you have any recommendations for things I should do in my senior high school year?

  • @s_lasgalen

    @s_lasgalen

    Жыл бұрын

    @@bingbonghafu Hey! This possibly depends on where you are from because schools in different countries have different possibilities and programs. In my school I had to choose a few subjects that I would study on an advanced level (I went with history, English and social studies) so if your school gives you a choice, focus on the subjects that will matter in the future. We also had an obligatory research project and I did mine on the topic of Greek and Latin roots in indo-european languages, so having some research experience with languages was very helpful for me. Don't stress yourself over learning too many languages at once, if you want to be a polyglot, you'll have time for that in college. If you are studying a foreign language, having one is enough (if you're *not* from an English speaking country, like I am, practice your English to the max). Also I'd recommend you to research universities with linguistics programms as much as possible because some of them have special requirements which you will need to be prepared for. Hope this helps.)

But almost no-one from the french speaking country can speak German after at least 7 years of learning it in school and vis versa. Most people who graduate from Gymnasium can't even speak it. Instead, if we come across someone from another part of Switzerland we're just gonna speak English with them because that's what everyone speaks and understands due to it being universal and parents being way more likely to finance a trip to England for a few weeks to learn it because it's so important.

  • @brohvakiindova4452

    @brohvakiindova4452

    Жыл бұрын

    @realauthority202 No you don't have to do 40 minutes every day. The most important part is the consistency, you can also pick 3 days a week and do 1 hour each. Also different people learn on different speeds and as you said depending on the similarity to your native language it can be super hard or super easy. What I think works really nice is having some passive inputs once you have a good foundation. English is of course everywhere so people are constantly reminded etc. but with other languages you can just have certain media you consume set to the language and don't explicitly use it as studying but just to keep your brain invested in it. Randomly using a language in day to day life is a hugely powerful tool that doesn't make it a huge chore / investment to learn a language. Also nobody pressures you to be fluent in 2 years, maybe you need 5. Maybe you love doing it and are there in 1 year etc.

The new update made everyone lose their progress, for Japanese learners it makes it so bad because the new update teaches them things they didn’t learn, or it expects them to know stuff they never even saw before. Plus, if the language yr learning has forms like in my language there’s masu and ru ANYWAY, it only teaches u th polite form. I know the alphabet, I can read greek and speak it as I read it but I don't know what it says!! I just can't memorise the words. It is so embarrassing, and so disheartening. I'm not a stupid person but the grammar is so confusing and try as I might I just can't wrap my head around it. The weekends were also filled with writing our test material we would have to then replay back our class every month. It was hard, but it works. Just 40mins a day for a whole year will do wonders. In terms of speaking, I usually imitate the expressions and phrases that is commonly used by natives and it actually helped me! Plus, dramas and movies helped me yet watching variety shows, talks shows, and listening to podcasts is a lot more helpful because you will able to hear how they converse naturally with their fellow native speaker. For listening I found it extremely helpful to watch videos for toddlers - find a show similar to the Ms Rachel channel where they say a word and show what it is. This is helpful in gaining context and hearing it in an enthusiastic manner of speaking that won’t make your brain go “this is boring” Most of all get excited! Find some songs or shows you love enough to learn the words, get immersed in the food, culture, art whatever you like! Learning comes easiest when you are excited to learn.

    As someone that knew English before having English as a subject in high-school (The easiest Straight A's I ever had lmao), a thing I always encourage is to basically consume the same content but in the language they wanna learn. Like- you wanna learn Spanish and like to watch anime? Do it, but search for the Spanish dub or at least English dub with Spanish subtitles. I used to watch Vines and other English content on KZread, play videogames (They weren't dubed on spanish, so I had no choice than trying to understand what they were saying lol),etc. It came so natural that I have never (before highschool) sat down and study what I was looking at. It may not be the greatest to speak, but it really helped me to write and read English. I still have a lot to learn, but it was really surprising to see friends of mine going to private schools dedicated to teach English and 80% of them had bad grades on English in high-school Hope this help somebody

    Another suggestion is to dedicate the entire 40 minutes of a "study session" to one of the 4/5 categories. This improves assimilation and retention better than switching tasks so often i.e. up to 4 times in about 30mins. According to the Pomodoro study/productivity technique, optimum amount of time for a "time block" is 20 - 60 minutes depending on your attention span. Then just have multiple study sessions in a week, where you (solely) study the different aspects of the language. Ofcourse, feel free to be flexible and freelance around such a schedule. Happy learning.🎉

    people always say, they know how to speak german like a native. But everyone has an accent, and he will definetly have a big one. The loose the accent you will need time and in 2 years you cant get om a native level

    @@christoph5731 you can have a different accent & be fluent in a language Im a native Spanish speaker & every Spanish speaking country has its own accent. Just as Jamaica speaks English & they have a completely different accent to Americans etc

    I speak English natively, I’ve been doing Spanish through the school system for 4 years, self taught Greek for about a year (forgotten most now 😭) and am currently learning Italian both online and self teaching. I found that I learnt Italian a lot easier and faster than Spanish. And that’s because I was able to immerse myself in the language. Reading Italian books and magazines, watching Italian films, talking to Italian people, IN ITALIAN. You don’t get that in a class room where it’s just translation after translation with the odd listening task.

    Don't forget to learn about slangs. Watch movies, news, etc, in that language. It really helps to sound like a native and not a dictionary ridden tourist 😂.

    Have you met many foreigners in your life speaking your native language ( I guess spanish ) like a native , I mean really like a native. How many have you met ? not much, and this is because very few people can achieve this.

    Yea but he didn't learn English in two years, believe me. Bro lies and misleads. Just learn stuff normally, get a nice textbook with audio and exercises, add interactive activities, add some reading, watch some shows...
