The Fastest Light Tank Ever Made

As you guys know, light tanks are my favorite type of armored fighting vehicle. But I've been wondering, what is the fastest light tank ever made? I thought maybe it'd be the BT-7, M18, or VT1-2, but that's actually not the case. To find out, we have to go back to the Armored Combat Vehicle Technology program. Yes, the program that spawned the HSTV-L. No, the HSTV-L is not the fastest. It was called HIMAG, and I hope that Gaijin doesn't see this since the tank would make a terrible addition to War Thunder.

Honestly though that's just the US mentality. Normal countries when trying to make something do the FAST they carefully design and measure out every curve of the vehicle to maximize airflow. They squeeze every single HP they can out of the smallest possible engine to maximize Power/Weight. The USA just shoves the biggest damn engine they can find in whatever hole is big enough to fit it in in whatever box on wheels happens to be available. See: Muscle cars, Hot Rod, Dodge in general but specifically the SRT Hellcat GRAND CARAVAN, and any sport truck put out by the big three US automotive companies in the late 90s early 2000s. Because who needs aerodynamics when you've got an engine block the size of a tool shed strapped into a van?

Honourable mention to FV101 Scorpion, which is (to my knowledge) the fastest tracked tank to enter production
@garygcrook
Жыл бұрын
The FV101 Scorpion was tested in 2002 and gained the Guiness World Record for being the fastest production tank at 82.23 km/h - 51.1mph. That was probably the Diesel (190hp) variant built between 1980-85, while the original 1974 production had a Jaguar J60 engine (246-265hp, the same as the E-Type), which might explain why the Alvis's CVRT platform tanks like the Scorpion are said to be able to reach 126km/h - 70mph forwards and in reverse. A small turbine AGS kinda makes sense. I read that turbines have great fuel efficiency when under load, but horrible efficiency when idling. That's how the Abrams is simultaneously a gas guzzler and astoundingly fuel efficient at the same time, depending on if it's moving or not. A generator's load doesn't really fluctuate that much, and I'd expect for a tank the electrical load doesn't fluctuate that much (relative to the load fluctuation of moving the tank and not), so the AGS is not really "idling" much. If that's the case and the AGS is always under load when it's on... a small turbine could be great!
Every time I see you play the HSTV-L on one of your videos I just want the thing more. I’m obsessed with it now thanks to you Spooks

I manned the clinic just outside the box at Fort Irwin. I was surprised by the amount of head injuries from tankers. This reminds me of a funny story from the development of the Cromwell tank. The British were trying to adapt their Rolls Royce Merlin aircraft engine to work in a tank, eventually resulting in the Meteor. As a testbed for the new Meteor engine, they mounted it in a Crusader. Assuming this early testbed had the same specs as the final engine, that would theoretically give it somewhere around 30 hp per ton. When doing a test to see how fast it would go, both the man at the start of the run and the man at the end failed to actually record the time because of how shocked they were by it's speed. The max speed given by an onboard sensor was, "somewhere in excess of 50 mph". Which is just absolutely insane.
Love the Hot Rod info. Also RIP that BT right at the end of the video, not even a shout out or nothing :(
Every time i see a hstvl video here I am excited I love the hstvl.
The Hi-Mag was built by the National Waterlift Company of Kalamazoo, Michigan. It was a test vehicle only and was not armored. My father was a engineer on the project from it inception. The prototype achieved a top speed of some 70 mph, any faster and it would throw a track. It used a in house National Water lift hydro pneumatic suspension system which could be adjusted for height. It was tested at the factory, then at Ft Custer, Battle Creek, Michigan then it was shipped out west for further testing. I’m not sure what ever happened to it, but since it was essentially a boiler plate tank, I suggest it ended up as a target on the gunnery range…🤷🏻♂️

I'm surprised of that M113. Complete madlads. That tank has literally the aerodynamics of a brick.
Issue with high top speed in tracked vehicles is the crew lack the durability to take it. M1 Abrams has a speed limiter because it's quite capable of becoming airborne over small rises and the breaking spines if it's going at its mechanical top speed.
