Honestly, at this point in time in the pursuit of top speed we're not only running into problems with tires, but also space. There are only a handful of places where you can test such speeds, one of which is the VW test oval in Germany where they let the Bugatti run free. They don't let the Koenigsegg run there though, so last time they closed some hectic stretch of a highway near Las Vegas. There aren't many places left to go to for such tests.

Human reaction time is also a major factor. We can only react so quickly. Your eyes see the situation, the signal travels to your brain, your brain processes it, your mind makes a decision, which then sends signals to your limbs to actually perform the correction. At normal speeds this chain of events seems instant, but at over 200mph it can be far too slow for a person to react in time. By the time you realize you have to do something, it's already too late. It can be assisted a bit with automatic braking and other "self driving" features but we don't have systems smart/fast enough to predict other human drivers at such high speeds. All it takes is one person to slightly drift out of their lane while you're doing 200+ mph for an insane collision to happen if you and/or the onboard detection systems can't react in time. tl;dr - Monkey brain not instant, car brain not fast or smart enough.

Australian 1972 Chrysler Valiant Charger, with a 302bhp inline six, held the Aussie showroom-stock drag racing record, at 14.8 seconds, until 2003, when it was eclipsed by the Holden Commodore GTS/R, with a Gen III Chev engine. Thought you'd find this interesting, mate.

I might give an argument challenging the Jackrabbit- the Mors type Z. True, it was used for racing and land speed records yet from 1902-1904 was produced for the open market- and could hit 93+ MPH. Yet I suppose in the spirit of the video an argument against the Mors can be had so good on you.

Want to hear something really weird? You get into bicycle racing and the sensation of speed is much greater than cars or motorcycles. With the car you have to be going what at least 70 80 to feel like you're going fast, and the same with my 750 motorcycle that I had. Bicycle riding racing is Hairy, well for two reasons you get into really good shape, then you figure out how to get the bicycle to go really fast. Also it's Hairy for a reason, it's really easy to lose control get messed up. Also when you're done riding a bicycle you feel great! Can you say that with a car or a motorcycle?

I think you need a standard for the word "production" typically it is 2500 units at least for LMH IMSA leigibility - so several of your top "production" cars maybe weren't, especially if that production as to be in a given year. Only 472 Desenburg Model Js were made. Only 1100 Austin Martin DB4s, Mirura's 741 in 3 models largest was 474 for the P400. Certainly some if not all of these could have been raced; and race cars of the era could have been made street legal generally so I don't see how you really differentiate if it isn't on production numbers. When you are talking rare vehicles costing $170,000 you may as well allow 1 off speed record holders.

  • @isthatrubble

he'd need a different standard for each decade, at least in the first half, because making 2500 of a certain car in 1915 is a very different thing to making 2500 of a car in 1955.

1969 Dodge Charger Daytona, with a 426 hemi and a 4 speed was capable of 200+ mph. on march 24th 1970, Buddy Baker clocked a lap at Talladega motor speedway of 200.447 MPH in a 1969 Dodge Charger 500 that was sold on the west coast to a magazine as a promotional car, stolen and eventually recovered and bought back by chrysler, updated to a daytona with the wing and nose, and taken racing. it was claimed to top 205 mph at chrysler's own proving grounds in late 1969. this is the fastest car of the 1960s and updated versions would become the fastest cars of the 1970s and possibly the 80s. nascar racing cars were street legal cars in production with various manufacturers at the time, this is where the term "stock car" comes from. they were stock, production cars.

The Miura S had 375HP, the SV had 385 HP, the Countach LP400 had 375HP again. The Countach was capable of to reach 290 km/h what the Daytona wasn't. The later LP400S with its wide body extensions and tyres was slower and it had a reduced power output to 353HP, so its top speed dropped to the 270 km/h region (and even less with the wing attached to it) by the end of the decade
