    The war began in 1806 when the Ashanti king, or Asantehene, brought charges of grave robbing on some of his subjects who run from Kumasi to Assin. Fleeing Ashanti lands, these suspected grave robbers were granted refuge by the Fante. Ashanti king Osei Bonsu sent out an army against the Fante for harboring fugitives. At Abura Dunkwa, a major battle was fought, during which the Ashanti were initially victorious and captured the accused Assin Chief, Otsibu. After they captured Otsibu, the Ashanti commander, Appia Dunkwa, sent his men further inward to Fante territory where they met the rear guard and support army of the Fante Forces commanded by Atta that had previously broken away from the other Fante armies at Mumford. The combined Fante Union Army now under Atta's command rendezvoused at Tantumkweri where they defeated the Ashanti after a long day of fighting

    Fante is not Asante as you claimed. When Fante emerged in the 13th century there was no Asante. Mfantse (Fante) does not mean the half that broke away. Mfantse is a combination of Etsi and Bono. The leader of the borbor group that lead its people to Mankessim asked his people to adopt the language of the Etsi people (Mo "mfa etsi" kasa) who were already inhabitants of the place. That's how the word Mfantse originated. Fante or Mfantse is not Twi or Asante. Fante is a standing language on its own with different dialects such as Mankessim Fante, Cape Coast Fante, Gomoa Fante, Abura Fante, Agona Fante etc.

    Thanks so much for your comments. Our brother is making a great effort. However as you demonstrate it is also important to ensure facts are correct or where there is doubt make this clear. I recently heard a member of Our council of state say (during a debate about seccessionists) many of our problems arise due to us not knowing our [true] history and he is right. I also hasten to add one can also challenge or prove the veracity of any version of history by applying logic. As you correctly point out if the Fante state emerged in 13th Century then it would not be possible for them to be a branch of the Asante. The latter only emerged in the late 17th century which makes the suggestion of Fante being a branch of Asante anachronistic.

    Great work here enjoyed watching this. I was particularly interested in the Fante confederacy which i believe had a rotating president from one of the Amanhene from each Fante state. Also good you highlighted the resistance that the Fantes put up against european domination and treachery. These people that the Fantes met at Mankessim was it? I believe they were Guan. Wasn't the Giant Asebu Amenfi a Guan ? There is also a debate about the King that the Portuguese met at Elmina/Adina being a Guan and thus the name Kwamina Ansah is a misinterpretation of something else the Portuguese referred to him as Caramansa (Mansa being connected to the word given to the Kings of Mali) Another question/observation what made the distinctions between the Wassa, Ahanta and Fante at the time they migrated. We know nowadays their dialects/language and aspects of culture are varied. But at the time if they all came from Bono Manso surely the language and culture was more homogenous. I think as a nation in transition our forefathers had more wisdom than us. These stories must be told.

    Befor Mfantse Borbor arrived, there were already group living in the region. There were, Asebu, Efutu, Awutu, Senya, Agona and Etsi people. Efutu was the biggest covering Elmina, Komemda, Shama, Cape Coast, Winneba. The Etsi people lived in Mankessim, Anomabo, Saltpond. Asebu lived in Moree, Asebu town etc. These people were Guans. Borbor group of people mixed with them whiles others moved away and settled in Greater Accra, The Fante language is a combination of Etsi (Guan) and Bono. So yes, Guan was in existence before the Borbor group arrived.

    You tried your best, but let me make some few corrections; Mankessim literally means “big valley“ or as we the fantes say. “Amuna kessim”, which later corrupted to “Mankessim”. And also some of the names of the towns were mispronounced.

  • @africantruth2539

    @africantruth2539

    The CEO Mankessim does not literally means "big valley". It means large town or state (Oman kesemu) like "Asare man kese" meaning Asare's large town. Today it is called Asamankanse as Oman kesemu has become Mankessim. Another good example is Omanhen meaning a town's king. it does not mean valley king.

    Good job! Please look for Kwaku Darko Ankrah for more literature. The entire coastal region was occupied by the Guans including Etsi (who mixed with the Bono to form Fante), Gomua, Simpah, Awutu Efutu, Nzema, etc. There is always a claim by some Akans, Ewes, and Gas that they went to war with the originals (Guans) and overpowered them. This is questionable because Guans were lead by Priests and avoided war at all cost. They preferred to welcome others including the first Europeans to form communities.

    @@Tu51ndBl4d3 please share your knowledge it is important we get it right. If you remain silent then you also become culpable. Many people will come on to this channel and accept this version of events and go and regurgitate it elsewhere thus further spreading such misinformation. I am all too familar with this happening and as an example i can tell you that such misinformation about my hometown Axim has made its way on to platforms such as Wikipedia which are more widely read and sadly believed. Mindful that often events especially oral traditions are lost in translation or at times revised for more nefarious purpose. So beyond merely narrating any historical events the veracity of such claims needs to be examined forensically too. If i recall correctly in this video there is a claim that the Fante came from Asante. Anyone with reasonable knowledge knows, and one viewer has pointed this out, this would be anachronistic because Asante did not exist until the late 17th century. This is a good example of how one not only challenges but disproves what is being said. If it is incorrect challenge what is said, better still demonstrate why it is incorrect and why your version is more accurate or believable. Dont walk away for others to accept it as their only source of knowledge and truth. This video could very well still be available to generations after us.
