The Fall of the Swedish Empire

Charles X is dead, and Sweden looks to be in a good position. However, an ineffective regency council, and the relentless efforts of Sweden's enemies, eventually topple the beast. Sweden wil never again be a great power.

As a Swede you make Karl XII seem much weaker than he was, he was 17 at the invasion. Same age as Carl XI at Lund (should have been mentioned). Furthermore you should have noted that Sweden inherited by Carl XI was still much more powerful than Sweden of Karl IX or Gustav II Adolf. The old military traditions meant the armies of Karl XI were still formidable. Lund saved the empire. Furthermore Karl XII did not want peace with Denmark, he wanted to conquer it and redo Tåget över bält. Furthermore the Dane’s were never a real threat in comparison to Russia and Poland. The conquest of Denmark-Norway was seen as a formality continuing the process started by Karl X (ideally taking Norway then finally Denmark). Should have mentioned Karl was 18 at narva, troop numbers 12000 and 38000 roughly plus narva garrison. Stanislaw wasn’t a puppet king but one supported by pro Swedish nobles rather than pro-Russian nobles. Furthermore it was Poltava which ended the campaign which was due to the injury of Karl XII leading to an overtly cautious strategy and lower morale. The battle could have been won, with time the Swedes with Poland and Ottomans would have won. Karl XII died during Norwegian winter, he lost at poltava in summer. Also Karl XII did successfully beat back the Danes and Sweden remained a great power until the Napoleonic wars. Especially under Gustav III who restored absolute rule, this ended with the disposition of Gustav IV Adolf. Either way appreciate the interest in Swedish history, hope comment was insightful rather than annoying.

No thank you it was a very interesting comment. I do regret that a lot of the nuance did not make it into the video. I do very much agree with you that Karl XII was a very strong king and yeah there was plenty of stuff I could have mentioned. Maybe in the future I will remake the video adding bits of nuance like Karl XII petitioning the Ottomans to join the war while staying in their territory after Poltava. But yeah as a Swede myself expect plenty more content on Swedish history.
