The Fall Of The Minivan

The minivan once helped save Chrysler from total ruin in the 1980s, but now it's relegated to a small portion of the automotive market despite fitting most customers' desires in a car. Meanwhile, buyers scoop up sport utility vehicles and crossovers at an increasing rate. Automakers are now faced with the choice of whether they ought to keep selling these multi-purpose vehicles or manufacture more popular and profitable models.

Jnguyen93 Gas Guzzler. 16 city 22 highway is comparable to a 1980’s Oldsmobile Station Wagon with a carbureted V8 even after adjusting for the revised fuel economy testing procedure. Nearly all 7-8 seat SUVs with all wheel drive use substantially less fuel. If Toyota revised the design and made it less of a gas guzzler, it would be different, but alas, they don’t seem to want to do so.

You guys under estimate Sedans, & wagons. Most SUV's don't offer much more space & comfort then a mid or full sized sedan. Also unless you plan on going off roading all you need if front wheel drive, even for moderate off roading the clearance on a sedan is fine. Though the mini van is king I'll admit. Though you can travel with any car, I've got a Hyundai Elantra mid sized sedan so nothing to brag about, but it hasn't failed me on any trips so far.

I don't think minivans will ever die off indefinitely. They will always have a niche market. You just can't carry 7 full grown adults and some bags in a 3-row crossover like you can in a minivan. I don't care what anyone says. Your other option is a Chevy Tahoe and those SUVs are just absurdly expensive and impractical to own. If nothing, the minivan will remain a favorite for families with 4 or more kids, people that use them as small practical work vans, livery companies, and car rental companies. It also still has popularity in Canada. For the foreseeable future, I don't see Chrysler, Toyota, or Honda axing the minivan. All the other brands stopped making minivans because they were never as good at making them as these three to begin with.

5 years owning a minivan. Struggled making the purchase at first, but DAMN IT....this thing does it all! 1) 8 hour drive to the beach. Fully loaded with kids, dog, luggage and bikes with plenty of room left....no problem. 2) Moving a friend....washer, dryer and other boxes in one trip. Boom! 3) Run to Home Depot...10 sheets of plywood, couple of 2x4s and other hardware. Yeah...It's got you covered. 4) Towing a small utility trailer filled with yard debris (limbs, leaves and grass clippings). Just another day on the job. 5) Rolling up to the club with onlookers gazing with envy......never gonna happen. Then again, I don't club anymore. Comes down to insecurities in their own self image. Hell, I still fight with that minivan vibe. I've been looking at trucks to replace it. I gave up because the van does everything I need and more than the truck. I don't need towing capacity. I lose interior space and I can't just throw large items in the back with out tie downs on the short beds. Own it with confidence like these guys!! I asked myself what was the disadvantage to owing a minivan? The answer is that my van had a load capacity capable of handling "only" 30 sheets. Oh, and by the way, it was raining.

@@frankhoward7645 Exactly. Have to consider weather when hauling. Do I throw a tarp on or not? I bought some simple airbags for my van ($100). When I know I'm hauling a heavy load or going on vacation with tons of stuff, I add some extra PSI for the rear and it doesn't even squat. Drives much better. If I was going to be towing or hauling extremely heavy items, then I would need a truck, but right now, the van does everything I need.

The only thing a truck is better at is if you’re hauling a trailer that’s more than 7,000 pounds, hauling a true 1500 pounds of materials in the box, or really going off road. If you’re just towing a 17 foot boat, or hauling groceries and knick knacks, or driving on dirt roads an minivan is just fine. Sure you don’t want that firewood or manure in your minivan, but that’s what a utility trailer is for.

Jessica Durant I'm curious as to why you don't want a mini van. Can you elaborate? They drive better, handle better, have more room, come in AWD if you want just like a crossover, way cheaper to insure. They are the most family friendly vehicle available. Everyone I know that passes on a minivan is because of an image thing. And that image is family rig and they don't want to drive a family hauler.

J A it’s just that. They have always looked like a handheld vacuum cleaner to me. I agree that vans are great family cars. I have a family, I’m not ashamed of being a mom or the stigma of driving a van. My oldest will be in his own car before my youngest is out of a booster seat. Plus, I just don’t want one. If I’m gonna be making the payments on a car then I want to love it. I’m gonna be riding in the front. If my kids want the comfort, luxury and space to stretch out and put French fries in the seatbelt holes then they can help pay for it a van. With that said though, I’m willing to have my mind changed if I don’t find a different kind of family hauler that I actually like looking at.

I own one and I love it. For moving 7 people in comfort, plus all their gear, you can't beat it. All 3 rows have reclining leather seats. Tri-zone automatic climate control. Need to move a bunch of stuff, both middle and 3rd row seats fold into the floor and you have a space 4 ft wide and 8 ft long in back of the front seats to carry pretty much anything you can think of. If you're into SUVs or cross overs, fill your boots, but for comfort, tech, and sheer versatility, you can't beat a mini-van. And, if people judge you because you drive one, that's their problem, not yours.

The vans have a 6 cylinder engine compared to a 4 in the Journey which is safer for highway driving. Also better gas mileage. They are very accomodsting to adult passengers. The catgo space is so versatile not only for sports equpment but also for camping supplies, transporting larger objects such as furniture or many other bulky objects which could not be accommodated in many other vehicles. We will probably always opt for a minivan when we purchase a nnew vehicle

Haha. Truth is that lots of minivans have been more truck and SUV like than these “SUVs” The Mazda MPV and first gen Odyssey both had hinged rear passenger doors. The MPV as well as the Previa, Astro/Safari, and Aerostar all had full frames and were RWD based. Almost all the vans were available with AWD (the Sienna and Pacifica are today I believe) as well as some with 4WD with low range in some cases. So yeah... I call them minivans. Lots of them like the Traverse and Pilot really look like minivans. And their owners don’t like it.

I think a lot of it has to do with people being like “oh that’s what my parents had. I don’t want that, that’s boring”. I had 2014 Grand caravan for 6 1/2 years, honestly I loved it. But my wife hated it because she didn’t want something like her parents had. I think we had it for about 3 or 4 months before she finally gave up and drove it. We have a 2020 Ford Expedition max now, granted I like the Expedition better but the mini van was way more practical and easier to live with on a daily basis with 4 children.

Minivan (sometimes called simply as van) is a car classification for vehicles designed to transport passengers in the rear seating row(s), with reconfigurable seats in two or three rows. The equivalent classification in Europe is MPV (multi-purpose vehicle). In Southeast Asia, the equivalent classification is Asian Utility Vehicle (AUV). Compared with a full-size van, most minivans are based on a passenger car platform and have a lower body. Early models such as the Ford Aerostar and Chevrolet Astro utilized a compact pickup truck platform. Minivans often have a 'one-box' or 'two-box' body configuration, a higher roof, a flat floor, sliding doors for rear passengers, and high H-point seating. The largest size of minivans is also referred to as 'Large MPV' and became popular following the introduction of the 1984 Dodge Caravan and Renault Espace. Typically, these have platforms derived from D-segment passenger cars or compact pickups. Since the 1990s, the smaller compact MPV and mini MPV sizes of minivans have also become popular. Though predecessors to the minivan date back to the 1930s, the contemporary minivan body style was developed concurrently by several companies in the early 1980s, most notably by Chrysler (producer of the Chrysler minivans) and Renault (the Renault Espace), both first sold for model year 1984. Minivans cut into and eventually overshadowed the traditional market of the station wagon, and grew in global popularity and diversity throughout the 1990s. Since the 2000s, their reception has varied in different parts of the world: in North America, for example, they have been largely eclipsed by crossovers and SUVs, while in Asia they are commonly marketed as luxury vehicles.
