The Evolution of Villagers in Animal Crossing

Ойындар

Villagers in Animal Crossing have an extremely diminished role in Animal Crossing New Horizons. What is Nintendo trying to accomplish with this? Today Tama looks back through all the Animal Crossing games, from Gamecube to Animal Crossing New Leaf to New Horizons to figure out what has changed over time.

As I have now gotten more than one concerned commenter about the ending of the video, I'd like to clarify in a pinned comment that I did not mean to place the blame for these changes on the audience of Animal Crossing games as outlined in the video as "young women and young LGBT." I instead meant to to place the blame on the business model of gachapon and explain who I believed this model was targeting in this specific case. Nintendo has made several gachapon's aimed at various demographics and I believe this is their attempt to spread the same practice to the demographic that plays Animal Crossing. I apologize if my remarks were homophobic as that was not my intent. I believe that this demographic is underserved when it comes to media and that they deserve GOOD media that is made with them in mind. I just don't believe that a gacha game falls under the umbrella of "good media." I understand however that my remarks were careless, and I again apologize if I hurt anyone with this assumption. Adding to this, I can't exclude myself from the group of people described in the video that cares about aesthetics. *I* care about aesthetics more and more as time goes on. I think it is a wide cultural shift that is affecting many different age groups and demographics, not just AC fans. Linked here is the ending I originally wrote for this video and impulsively scrapped the night before recording. I think the video would have been improved if I had found some middle ground and left these sentiments in. They make my own biases more apparent and show empathy towards those who may prefer the game the way it is. twitter.com/TamashiiHiroka/status/1272850450392338433

As someone who is LGBT, I didn't take it that way at all? A lot of the same demographic that made up the "Moomin boom" from 2019 - essentially, a lot of LGBT people gravitated towards the show for its gentle tone and depiction of LGBT-coded characters in a positive light - seem to have migrated into the Animal Crossing fandom due to its similar gentle, easygoing tone and opportunities for making headcanons based on the limited specifics in the game (for example, the Crazy Redd and Tom Nook pairing, that seemed to have come out of nowhere but is nonetheless popular, as well as the popularity of the subtext between Flick and CJ.) Because of the limited options LGBT people have for media where they get a happy ending or a positive portrayal, I feel like it can be comforting to some to find a game like Animal Crossing where things are more open to headcanon and where real-life struggles or over the top gritty realism aren't as prevalent. Escapism is something everyone can gravitate towards (Disney movies with fairytale endings are popular for a reason, after all) but it still stands that LGBT folks deserve to have positive media created for them that isn't lazily made or just a straightup gacha game.

Personally, as a trans girl with ocd, I found myself puzzled that you seemed to mention features such as moving villager houses and terraforming as somehow negative changes? True, animal forest was originally conceived because the game’s creator wanted an experience to emulate having relationships with friends, since he had recently moved away from a place where he had lived for a long time, but nook miles hardly feel like a gacha mechanic to me. If everything from island tickets and diy recipies and all that cost just bells, it would devalue them as a currency even more than they already have been. Having each player’s certain furniture types be locked to colors promotes online trading in the same way different Pokemon games have trade evolutions and version exclusives. Personally, while it is sad that villager personalities have been toned down and villager impact on the town is more removed, I don’t think animal crossing: new horizons is a full fledged gachapon hell where you either spend 100,000 nook miles island hopping or shill out $50 for an amiibo card. I think the inhabitants of the series becoming shells of their former selves is just a byproduct of wanting to focus more on that “visual” aspect. I’m not trying to justify the decision, I just think it comes from a place of oversight rather than malice. Nintendo didn’t think “let’s tone down the personalities so they can be more marketable”, because if they did, I doubt they would keep the cast as consistent as they do. I want to end this by saying I’ve been a fan of yours for a really long time and I, as always, really enjoyed this video. I’m just responding as a 18-24 year old lgbt female as to why my “demographic” might be drawn to the game. Because it’s more than just “I get to sexualize a cat with glasses”, animal crossing is a place where I can be myself and be accepted by others, I can’t think of another simulator game that lets you be who you want to be with no questions asked. While being able to have ordinances to accommodate different lifestyles creates a wider appeal, I don’t see why that should be seen as a *negative*?

  • @Tama-Hero

    @Tama-Hero

    4 жыл бұрын

@@coopeachu It's only a negative to me personally because I *personally* prefer roleplaying games with interesting dynamic characters. It's just my own taste and bias since I'm the one that made the video and I'm salty that my favorite feature was removed. I was once also a person who moved away from everyone I knew and also found comfort in having some animal friends for a while and am sad that it's not something the game offers anymore. The specific points I was illustrating such as ordinances or terraforming were more to point out a change in priorities, giving the player more (absolute) power at the expense of villagers, not that making the game more accessible was a bad thing in general, just the shift of power bothered me and those were examples. Things like removing depth in order to give the player absolute agency WHILE toning down villagers takes away the parts of the game that I enjoyed as a lonely kid who just wanted something to look forward to on a Saturday night and feel like I was accomplishing something, the more RPG life sim aspects. It's perfectly valid to still enjoy the game in its current state if you're not me and like other things about it more. You're right, some people do need a nice gentle place to call their own and express themselves, because some demographics like the one drawn to Animal Crossing are not well served by the industry (or the world in general) and need spaces and games like that. I don't fault anyone for enjoying those things and they can be beneficial to people.

Yep, I loved a few "ugly" villagers in older games because they had a great character but now they're all like empty all lazy, cranky or smug characters have the same dialogue, the same character etc. Nothing special about them except for their photo quotes. And why would you have like bearold if you can have stitches with the same dialogue (for the example, IDK what bearolds character was)

It is kind of funny how when I played Wild World I had a villager named Nan move in literally right next to my house. It made it almost impossible to have flowers, trees or even fences and paths on the right half of my yard. I remember being SO frustrated that I had no say where she moved into but her being so close forced me to interact with her and she quickly became my favourite villager! Then, when she decided to move one day, it was literally heartbreaking. I suddenly had my yard back, but I lost my best friend :C

I can super relate to that. Additionally, I got so sad that after talking to them two or three times, they usually opened up with a passive aggressive "wow, I'm really seeing a lot of you today huh". All I wanted was to hear some unique dialogue, rather than that they saw me hitting a rock, or that an egg dropped out a tree - in previous games you had to actually stalk them for an hour to get that kind of response.

  • @minimalchill

    @minimalchill

Yup. I quit for the same reasons. Not only that...I feel into a bit of a existential crisis over the franchise as a whole. I realized as a 32 year old adult, heading into a promotion at work, on the cusp of establishing a new romantic connection with someone, who devotes most of his time into identity sealing/defining, and does a lot of work around trauma and the healing of it all...that the devotion AC requires simply does not fit into my life anymore. I have decided to give up all heavy routine based time sink games. I didn't just sell ACNH. I sold every AC I owned. I'll always have the memories. There is always emulation if I ever wanna revisit those worlds for a day or so. But going forward, I am done with the franchise. It is not the same game I fell in love with way back in the summer when renting the game again and again from Blockbuster for my GameCube. Its not that game I opened Christmas morning. Its a shell. A shadow of its former self. An abysmal disappointment as far as I'm concerned. Genuinely, I am deeply saddended by what it has become. I devoted 260+ hours to ACNH bc at first it was a lot of fun. The moment you terraform a couple of things though it becomes clear something insidiously wrong is occuring.

Made me decide to not even get the game since the main reason I played was to make friends with the villagers and not just have them as another prop in town. The thing about Animal Crossing becoming a franchise more based on aesthetics and online interaction and less in overall character interaction with villagers is that it has a pretty high chance of alienating a part of its fanbase. For example, I'm not particularly good at placing furniture around my town, or designs, or fencing, or anything like that, and when the game's current fanbase cares mostly about those types of things, as a fan of the same game, it can feel like exclusion. Another thing is loners like me who are also anti-social and awkward have more difficulty in making friends, whether it be online or in real life, and when the game harps so much on interacting with other players, and actively doing things with them, like going to their towns for turnip prices, feels like it is innately more difficult to have a good time with the game when instead of depending on other people giving you money, or the previous turnip price example, to make money in the game in a singleplayer way becomes that more time-consuming and tiring :V

I agree. I still haven't decorated most of my island, and I don't like the community. I miss when Animal Crossing was a game about making friends with interesting animal characters. The villagers in ACNH act like lifeless robots who repeat the same 5-6 lines of dialogue constantly. Not to mention that even when I do play online with my friends, there's nothing to do because they got rid of the minigames from ACNL. I literally had more fun with both Happy Home Designer and Pocket Camp, because those games at least gave us things to do when we logged on. ACNH is just like a giant empty canvas with some gacha dolls.

And I see all these pretty towns and thing “I wanna do that, I want a pretty town too!” So I try, and maybe I have to build the skill or smth, I dunno, but it’s difficult for me, and I feel kinda left out. I wanna share my town too, but it’s still basic and default looking, so it’s like “what’s the point?” Just kinda sucks cause animal crossing should always be a life sim first, not a decorating sim

There's alot of dialog, there's about 5 spots on every 3 rooms of the museum on every 3 exhibitions that vary for each 8 personality types, so there's about 360 unique dialog that is just super rare since it requires the animal to first visit the museum, then visit a room it hasn't been to before. I think if u wait, the animals will look through all 5 spots in the room eventually, but they don't seem to change rooms during a single visit. If u like building and customizing, NH truly is the best AC game so far. It can be updated infinitely, and it has potential to keep being the best AC game even for AC veterans, if you only make enough noise and collect enough likes or upvotes on a suggestion before sending the link of it to nintendo. But it only works if it is a link, because photos can be manipulated. A link with a ton of upvotes is pretty credible and clearly wanted addition. Gyroids and new shops and diving and the dream thing are what the game is missing right now, but after a year they'll probably have them implemented and then have time to take suggestions, as the game was super super popular, they just can't stop hammering while the iron is hot.

This is why I want 1. "Mean mode," which makes villagers more antagonistic towards the player and lower levels of knowing them makes them aggressive. 2. VARIETY. Hybrid personalities - villagers who have a mixture of multiple personalities, which means they'll randomize which dialogue or reaction they'll have to an item. This will mean your villagers have more distinct personalities, along with a few hybrid-exclusive dialogue lines. And more dialogue. This makes them feel like actual people who don't just say the same thing all day. This is also why hybrid personalities are good - it makes them feel less predictable. You know what Alice is gonna say if Norma's said it before (seeing as they are both Normal villagers). 3. CONSEQUENCES. Maybe they would actually start bullying you *if* you bullied them first (like pushing them around a lot). 4. LESS ONE-SIDED TALKING. Make them ping you more. 5. OPINIONS. Stop them from complimenting you regardless, and make them go "that doesn't look nice on you" if an outfit you have uses colours they dislike personally. Have them knock on your door while you're in, and you have the choice to let them in or not. If they are inside, they'll give you their opinions on your house, based on their favourite/least favourite sets of furniture. Hope Nintendo adds more villager-related things, though I doubt this.

I think the reason ACNH villagers repeat everything you did like you have the memory of a goldfish was a gameplay mechanic intended for when you play the game as a multiplayer game. That way you don't have to wonder, "what did my little sister do yesterday?" Instead, Reneigh just tells you she was shaking a lot of trees or hitting all the rocks. They should've really considered all the people who play the game alone, considering the best selling games in the series were on handhelds where sharing wouldn't be as common.

imo they did that to either punish people who would "exploit" the system (they might have done this with new leaf, i just remember hearing about it) or just to force people to buy more switches and not share. its part of a whole system of game systems or subscription systems that don't like "sharing" between multiple people, but it's $60 and not that much game. It's just mean to not have the traditional 3-slot and force siblings or spouses to literally share the entire development of an island-what if you don't like where they put the museum or ables? and you each waste 50k every time to move it around when the other person is on? what if you were planning to donate fish or bugs and you save them, and the next time you go on they're already donated? what if your design in a design slot got deleted because THEY put something there? what if they took things you left on the island as a decoration because they have that power? and it only gets worse the more people are sharing; It's so myopic in its goal to force more sales that it becomes unappealing to a larger market of people who don't want to spend $120 for two separate islands with identical game content in each packet

When I noticed the core of this problem was when Blanca visited my town in April Fool's Day in New Leaf. She then goes to each animal's house to impersonate them, then you have to chose who's the real animal and who is Blanca in a quiz about information that you are supposed to know about your neighbours. I'd been playing for almost a year at that point and I didn't know the answer of any of those questions about any of my neighbours because THEY NEVER TALK ABOUT THEMSELVES. They don't have traits that differentiate them AT ALL. Some are supposed to have siblings and family, they have goals in life and they have skills that they are really good at but you don't know this because they don't talk about themselves. It also doesn't help that a lot of people who play New Horizons fetishise putting Raymond in a maid outfit or having him be a not-safe-for-work object of affection and such. People also drew the comparison of Raymond to some character from the murder mystery series "Danganronpa." They pretty much theorize a lot of people have a thing for a standoffish boy in glasses doing some stuff that isn't safe for KZread's content filters.

We wanted to dive deeper into their histories-- How did Sable make ends meet while raising her little sisters? How do Tom Nook and Rover know each other? How did the Nooklings end up with their uncle? Also, by some crazy science, Isabelle became A LOT more watered down than she was before. We already knew very little of her in New Leaf, and somehow she became the most boring character in New Horizons.

One concept I saw recently that could bridge the Mean Villagers and the modern system for me is to give villagers different moods each day. I like finding out that one of my villagers is sick so I can go give them medicine, and it'd be cool to see villagers' moods change each day. Maybe if you've neglected them for multiple days, you'll log in to see them angry/sad when they talk to you. When Leaf visits, gardening villagers could get more excited and ask you to help making a garden near their home. I'm not a huge fan of some of the things villagers would do in old games such as insults and stealing your stuff, but I'd love to see more dynamic personalities brought back. And yeah, anything to add more variety to the dialogue. I had two normal villagers I adored in my town (Gala and Lily), but their dialogue was so painfully similar that I had to kick Gala out. Giving Gala a different hobby would've gone extremely far in making her feel more distinct. And giving villagers unique relationships sounds perfect. I hate how some of my villagers have been together for around 2 months and they still rarely interact, and when they do it feels so unnatural. The house visits feel especially weird as it seems pretty arbitrary, so 2 villagers who've known each other for a while are as likely to visit each other as villagers who've been in the same town for a day.

I really wish they'd remake older animal crossing games. For me, the thing that stings most is that each animal crossing game is pretty fundamentally unique in that each game appeals to a totally different kind of player due to the shift in game priorities. But at the same time, the quality of life changes are so huge that it's hard to go back to older games and really stick to playing them. WW was my starter game and I really miss like... pretty much everything about it. But I love doing custom designs, and NH is best for that, and the graphics quality made it painful to go back to even by NL, and the inventory and customization.... Honestly, the level of control in NH is pretty overwhelming to me. My town is just stuck half terraformed with a little bit of river cut away instead of bridges since I couldn't decide. I just want to have a cute forest village, but the game itself doesn't really cater to that. If I could have WW just with a fresh coat of HD paint and *some* of the control NH gives, I would be happy just with that. Also they got rid of moving letters in NH which makes me super sad, since I always liked holding onto the letters of moved out villagers, even if we didn't get close :(

I have so many memories of playing City Folk with my cousins. When Mallory moved in she was super mean so me and my cousin would put pitfall seeds around her house and hit her with a net to try and get her to leave. We even gave her the nickname “Mallaría”. It was really fun though because it made things interesting, and we also had some really nice villagers (Bill was my favorite!) One day she asked to move out and me and my cousin were so excited! Finally we got what we asked for! But then we thought about it... we thought about all the fun we had with her and all the favors we had done for her. And we realized we had a love hate relationship with her that was the BEST! So we made her stay and continued to bully each other while still giving each other gifts. Even today I do that with all of my friends and I think it helped shape my personality. Me and my friends always pick on each other but love each other more than anything! When Mallory moved into my NH island I was expecting that same feeling so I started being mean to her only to find out she was COMPLETELY DIFFERENT. She was so... normal and boring. She didn’t put up any sort of fight she didn’t argue with me or call me names she just stood around. Idk why but it made me so sad to see this.

I don't think you should my friend. Fact is I DO like my villagers. Yeah i wish they had more personality, but I still find things to enjoy about them, and that's not strictly looks. Two of my faves (I'm resetting my island but still) were Marcie and Bangle. They aren't UGLY but they're not the best looking by far, but I liked them enough to care. And honestly I had that mindset going in, the other AC game I played, the ONLY one, was the gamecube, so I know villagers with personality, but right off the bat I wanted (at the very least) cute villagers, now I did watch some videos and such in the week before I got it, so maybe they "corrupted" me xD but I don't need the absolute prettiest villagers to like them. I had Skye and Deirdre and thought they were gorgeous, but found Dizzy endearing. There's nothing wrong with aesthetic appeal, idk why that'd be condemned, it's okay to hunt out certain personalities like it's a dating sim, but certain looks aren't? You have no reason to feel bad about playing or enjoying NH, or wanting to find nice looking villagers ^^ Tama even said she didn't mean to come across as gatekeeping or anything like that. I personally love redesigning my house and island, I like making rooms, I like symmetry, and as someone with OCD it can be good for me to do that, organization, color schemes, etc. I don't NEED super fleshed out villagers, though I would like them! But if the cost of that was not being able to control and sculpt my island, and move things where I wanted? I'd likely not pick it. It's okay for them to be pretty dolls, though they should at least give you options where they're not.

Relationships with villagers. I so wish my villagers didn’t all seem like children! Yes they’re adorable but I want Grumpy villagers to be grumpy. I feel like they could make over lapping personalities too, and i love the dynamic of working for a good relationship with your villagers. I remember being so astonished as a kid that these cute animals were absolute assholes, but over time realizing I’m winning their friendship by being nice to them - that felt great! I felt special! I miss that!!! I love how grumpy villagers in NH feel like grandpas but I hate that they’re like that the day you meet them. They can develop into nicer versions, but they don’t know me!!! They should act like it!!! I’ll also add that NH is all about aesthetics, and how your first 5 villagers have generic interiors. One of my first few is Sherb, he’s a true favorite of mine and I am so sad his interior is a dirt shack when he’s supposed to have an adorable home. But I don’t want to and don’t have the time to let him leave and find him again! I love him too much but I’m also stuck feeling bad that I cant even gift my way into him having a better house. I love how deep you dove into the mechanics of each game! Thanks for that! However, I've got some additional points (no real counterarguments but just a slightly different perspective) : In my opinion you heavily downplayed the impact visuals have on the perception of villagers as living creatures. Human communication is much more than just dialogue. This is partly a reason why NL was so lacklustre to me: the dialogue was shallow AND due to hardware limitations the visual expressiveness just wasn't there. But now in NH, with a beautiful (imo even perfect) HD art style, the audio-visual expressiveness is on point, which can make up for a lot. While the player alone has control over most of the environment alone, the villagers interact with and comment on it more than ever. This creates a sense of community on its own, that imo totally makes sense in the context of the deserted island. They arrived there to have a relaxed time away from everyday stress and wanted to give responsibilities like island maintenance to someone else - the player. So they automatically seem more relaxed, because on vacation one does not have as many everyday struggles. If the concept isn't someone's cup tea,. that's fine, but *on paper* the concept is executed brilliantly. (I totally agree that the game has balance issues when it comes to triggering the "good" dialogue and interactions tho. I hope they change the rates through an update just like they did with the visitors) Also every personality type now has 2 subtypes, which brings slight differences in dialogue. Those differences seem to be very small on paper, but in practice they make a huge difference for me so far. So a villagers character now consists of: - animal species/general appearance (yes this also contributes heavily to the perception of a character and in NH they are more pronounced than ever) - personality type - personality subtype - house facade + interior - hobbies, which are heavily pronounced in this game bc they appear in dialogue *and the villagers spend most of their time pursuing their hobbies in non verbal ways* One last point in this overly long comment would be the choice that players have. While you don't have to talk to villagers to make progress, you surely CAN make an effort to talk to them as often as possible. the first 2-3 dialogues each day are kinda samey, but if you really want to dig deeper, there is a ton of great dialogue hidden. You just have to put the effort in trying to get to know a villager better, just like with real people. Talkingto them in different places, during different activities, on different times of the day, etc... Not everyone is going to tell you their whole life story in the morning 2 days after you just met, expecially not in a vacation-like context. TL;DR: Visuals and interactions with the environment have a huge impact on the authenticity of a character and there's a lot of great dialogue in NH, it's just not perfectly distributed and it's not a necessity but rather a reward.

I can’t believe this video has been in my recommendations for so long, and I haven’t clicked on it sooner. This video was amazing. I agreed with a lot of things mentioned here, and it’s sad that the Animal Crossing franchise is declining in terms of the quality of villager interactions, one of its most staple features.

dang you basically described exactly why i like wild world the most out of all the other games and why i've had the most fun RECENTLY playing that one. i always knew that the complete lack of personality, conflict or just dialogue in new horizons bugged me but i never totally realized how engrossed you get in the community you live in in wild world. i would like to think they could add in more dialogue as the game goes on through patches or whatever, but i've already lost interest in the game because of there basically being no full relationships with your villagers. it makes me really sad since i was so excited for the game, and now there's not much to do other than dress up my town and try to pay for infrastructure. (also i have to interact with REAL people more to get certain things i want, which i also find a bummer since i primarily enjoy playing animal crossing alone these days)

Same, I also worry updates will be superficial things like new patterns for furniture or new objects to place outside. Not big things like updating the friendship system or improving dialogue trees so the villagers can use more of that writing the game supposedly has. The sheer number of times they just give me a single line of "gee, you sure talk to me a lot," is ridiculous. Sadly things like superficial updates and treating the villagers like cute little props to place here and there is kind of what gets the most attention on social media, while things like a game character seeming human your friendship with them feeling real aren't exactly talked about.

This is something that's been on my mind for awhile now (pretty much since the release of New Horizons). I did notice while playing New Leaf that cranky and snooty villagers weren't rude at all, but failed to notice how bland other characters were since I wasn't really old enough to see it when I played Wild World and sometimes City Folk. Playing New Horizons made me realize the problem. All of my favorite villagers are based on my experiences with them. In Wild World, my favorites were Stitches because he was nice to me (and also my brother liked him and I wanted to be JUST LIKE HIM at that point), Puddles and Freckles because me and my cousin swapped them multiple times, Bluebear because she was my cousins best friend, Brie because she introduced me to the song Two Days Ago, and some others as well. But I really only picked up one new favorite in New Leaf, and that's Gruff. Gruff isn't liked really and his design isn't the greatest honestly. But once I got past his crankiness, he started to mail me letters regularly and quickly became my best friend. In New Horizons, I got Hornsby and instantly fell in love. But now that I realize it, I don't really know him that well at all. If I want to really know who he is, I'd have to be lucky enough to get him in Population: Growing. I know this because he has the exact same dialogue as Stitches in New Horizons, which also sucks because I know Stitches from Wild World and he is not the same. A week ago, I picked up Wild World again because of this. I guess part of it was to relive the countless hours I spent playing with my cousin, but I did also want to revisit old villagers. I lost my original copy in a move six years ago, so I had to start fresh. It is incredibly amazing. I ended up with some of my favorites, or just other I'm familiar with (Savannah, Dizzy, Tangy, etc.). I actually ended up with Butch, but I'm a bit furious with him right now. One day, I found him in boxes and I tried to get him to stay, but he went on about how I'm never nice to him and I can't just expect him to drop all of his plans for me. Like, I'm sorry. I have known you for one week, and I wanted you to stay? I guess we can't all be sweeties. But anyways, I get so much enjoyment from just running around my town, looking for dorsal fin fish, and getting pinged by villagers. I find myself initiating conversations a lot in Wild World because a lot of what they have to say is interesting or hilarious. I New Horizons, I rarely talk to villagers because I usually just check the stores and turnip prices, and I just let 4000 turnips rot because I wasn't invested enough to sell them because I was spending my time playing a game in the same series from 15 years ago! New Horizons feels so lonely at times, because it's just me and as you said, dolls in their perfect doll houses. I've never really been in to designing my towns, with the most I do usually just being pathways. It kinda sucks, it feels like this is the end of an era. A lot of games I used to love just don't hold up in future iterations (Pokemon, Super Monkey Ball, Sonic, to name a few) I loved the video! Despite it now being 4:00am, I watched the whole thing in one sitting. I've been watching for about seven years now, and honestly some of your content in general is nostalgic for me. I'm for sure going to pick up one of your plushies (hopefully you sell enough!) and I really ought to start watching your streams. Sorry for writing a whole autobiography, but please know that all the work you put into your content does not go unappreciated!

Damn I feel you. Wild World was my absolute jam back in the day, my favorite Villager being Kiki the black kitty, I remember having so many countless and interesting conversations with her, and she would always gift me something cool. Bro she was my AC crush back then lol. But sadly she just doesn't feel the same anymore in NH. I think the main reason why some of our favorite video game franchises are so bland in comparison nowadays is because they simply lack the charm and personality that the older games had. And it's a damn shame... Welp, I guess I could go back in time and play Wild World and GameCube AC on my emulator.

My island sucked and my interest in the game was almost entirely in my character, my home and the villagers! i even had crushes on some of em!! Villagers like Chadder, Big Top, Colton, and Apollo were a huge part of my childhood even if Colton kept repeating the same dialogue about trains every hour. I can assure you I probably wouldve adored wild world even more than new leaf cus of the villager interactions!! And its a huge shame that villagers are just bland dolls now cus i really miss Apollo being cold or distant when i first met him.. now he just welcomed me with open arms and it feels so unnatural!! I wish Animal Crossing would just have a balance of good village customization AND good villager interaction, cus I love both aspects of the game so much!!!

  • @piippiz

Cranky villagers are only cranky on their dialogue when they talk to other villagers. The uchi personality seems the most mean right now. Snooty villagers have kinda lost their purpose when all everyone talks about is what the player did yesterday, their tattletale personality doesn't stand out when every villager now does that. Snooty personality Judy seemed creepy to me, being nice to me but harrassing my other villagers and jumping barbwire fences to do so, but Opal seems like such a mild mannered fancy lady, nothing is off and they behave. Smug personality Phil was very annoying, using other language words incorrectly and just inviting himself to my island, talking all high about himself all the time, and he seems bothered by my attention every time, when Raymond never made such a number about himself on my campsite, just acted very humbly. He does talk about playing some role often, but he has way more cute town tune opening and voice and expressions. And I didn't much care about Raymond before they just showed up I think that now the hippo and rhino and anteater and wolves, every animal with an physical moving jaw and eyes on the sides of the head suffer from expressing less emotion somehow. They can't smile. Merengue is unique and super cute, but I think Bea is better for expressing emotions in a more exaggerated way. While they don't have distinguished differences, there's still some personal preference and a different feel of the characters. it sucks when u have heard most of the dialogue, but there are many hidden gems like inside a museum, stung by a bee, KK slider visiting, bug off day, fishing tourney day, inside the shops, villager to villager conversations, the rare personality quizzes where u get to pick one answer out of 3 options from a pool of 4 options, comments about a specific piece of furniture (like many villagers don't have plants or a TV or kitchen equipment, but if u gift them one, they have a dialog for it) ....but on the field they really need a bit more variation. They need to offer the treasure hunt minigame more often and have a prompt to make them visit the museum (maybe as a kind of date, but more so that you get them to visit the museum so that u can get the 5 different dialogs that they have in each of the 3 rooms in each of the exhibitions in the museum. I've only got like 3 ever, and I bet every personality has different ones too! That makes 5x different spots for dialogue in 3 x 3 rooms in the museum times 8 personality types = 360 different dialogue options. And I have got 3 different in 3 months of playing, 700 ingame hours. So much personality, but basically inaccessible. We all know that the game was released unfinished, maybe as a marketing tactic because nintendo is good at it, see how they ration the consoles they sell and the plastic amiibo figurines especially. There are still many many changes and additions coming, so maybe if we make some noise, they'll still change or add some mechanics. This is my first AC game, I guess I'm lucky not to have prior experience from the games. I heard how grindy they were, and while I'm perfectly fine with the grind, I never had the consoles the games were for. I'm just a little dissapointed in how Isabelle is employed in the game. I'd love to see her have her own house or just stretch her legs more.

I do understand why they decided to focus on aesthetics instead of villagers. How popular animal crossing has gotten shows that they are doing the right thing. Nintendo is about games for everyone, so the best way is to stay safe. As someone who didn’t play the older games, I do actually like the characters. If you spend time to talk to them and give them gifts, you can build a relationship. Also write them letters because they’ll say a lot more in letters. You actually have to put in effort to build that relationship, it’s not just a mandatory game mechanic. I actually stick with a few favs in my town and will never move them out. The version may also matter, I play the English version, but my friend plays the Chinese version. And the conversations in Chinese were more interesting. Like Raymond is super popular because he hits on everyone, he romanticizes with the player and the other female villagers. This apparently doesn’t happen in the English version? ( I don’t have him).

Starting out with New Horizons as my first Animal Crossing game, even I can agree that the dialogue is repetitive most of the time. I cherish my favorite villagers and learned to love the ones I was stuck with by the game's random RNG. It's kinda sad that after playing for so long, I get super excited to see any new dialogue. Namely when villagers of different personalities strike up a conversation, which happens once in a great while. Sure, a lot of the dialogue is always played ad nauseam, but at least some of the personalities (lazy is my favorite) can have some hilarious quotes if you become better friends with them.

As someone who's first experience with AC is new horizons (because I was always too poor for any sort of console) I really wish the characters had more personality and diverse dialogue, particularly when it comes to personality. The whole reason I bought the game was to interact with the villagers because I'd heard so much about the quirky dialogue and fun personalities, and when the villagers interact with each other I can definitely see the charming elements of their personalities, but when they're talking specifically to me, I feel like they're just trying to say stuff to please me. That's why as an artist I've made more diverse personalities and backstories for each character, which helps me enjoy the characters and the game more, but I know that that's not everyone's cup of tea. Still I do enjoy the game, I have 300+ hours on it so they must be doing something right. Idk I just want the characters to feel like characters, like if Vivian wants to comment on my nasty ass clothes please let her insult me, if butch wants to bully me because I forgot to deliver the tank top he bought for Katt please let him.

That’s the thing. The game drains battery more than others (I used Hollow knight and NH and checked how much battery they take) so some updates as major as that could f it up. As well as many people kinda like the superficial dialogue out of wanting a safe space of projecting their ideals on them. Which is okay although makes for a meh gameplay for those who expect a more life sim. In my opinion I wish the characters were more interesting and used the mechanics of decoration to enhance. For example to make you help with a birthday party where you have to take into account the villager’s personality to succeed and getting a rare item like a star fragment or so in return. Or even them wanting you to help make their backyard cooler once you have a high happy home academy score as the villagers see you as a top notch designer

That's the thing. New Horizon isn't a BAD game. It does quite a lot of things well. And it definitely has that vibe of wanting to do one more thing before turning it off. It's also still the usual chill and relaxed game. The thing is, when compared to the previous games, it's lacking quite a bit. I will say, it does some stuff that I love. I love the extra slots for custom patterns. I love being able to decorate OUTSIDE and not just in your house. I like the daily goals. It gives you more to do so you don't run out of stuff so quickly. I love the extra customization for your own character (I started New Leaf recently and I hate the face it gave me, but I'm too far into my game to want to restart just to get a new face). And graphically it's pretty damn nice. The online stuff is pretty good too. The ease of the Dodo codes to just hop to someone's island is nice. And the IDEA of rare villagers is cool, because you could visit other islands to see them, but it kinda just turned into everyone gaming the system to try and get rare villagers. Which, considering the lack of personality they have in New Horizon, I can't really blame people for focusing more on the looks of a character instead of the character themselves. There's also a serious lack of furniture in NH (even to the point where pretty much ALL of the Nintendo-themed items from previous games....are just gone.) On top of that, there's almost TOO much focus on the Online. A lot of people play Animal Crossing because of their real life anxieties. They're not gonna want to join other players. They wanna sit on their island or in their town, and make friends with the villagers (the villagers that now just feel like boring video game npcs). Plus there's little things like your tools being able to break (including the higher quality ones), or the fact that you couldn't even swim in the game when it first came out despite that being a feature in New Leaf. They took two steps forward and three steps back. That's why a lot of players are going back to older games. Mostly New Leaf, but I've seen some people say they went back to Wild World, or even the original on Game Cube. Even aside from the lack of personality, I just hate when every villager is nice, constantly. I WANT a villager every now and then to be mean to me. I WANT villagers to be in a bad mood. I WANT at least one of my villagers to just be a permanent asshole. I want my villagers to be interesting.

(Rewatch squad!) The decision in NH to have one island per console rather than per profile still baffles me. As someone who's only played NH on a secondary profile I feel like a villager with expanded abilities, or an online visitor, rather than a real player/contributor. There are a lot of controls and options locked to the primary account that first creates the save. This seems to me like a deliberate decision rather than a technical hurdle, but I could be wrong. While watching this I first thought the rationale was to provide shared Switch consoles an instant multiplayer experience, but the fact that the games have now leaned so heavily into players having ultimate control, I feel like the functionality of secondary players here clashes directly with that design philosophy. I've pretty much dropped playing NH until I can afford a Switch and a copy of my own, because the non-primary experience feels so half-baked.

I don't even mind the one island per system thing, but the fact that all players aren't equal is just baffling to me. I could maybe see the merit if it was an OPTION, but the fact that it's the only way to play the game makes absolutely no sense to me

Yeah this decision is pretty arbitrary. Equally large and larger games like Breath of the Wild and Mario Odyssey allow players to have multiple individual files, so it just feels like the single island limit was a very feeble attempt to keep players from cheating I guess? I kinda like the idea of people getting to live together on an island as an option, but when it's mandatory it feels very weird. Especially if you have siblings (like I do) that want to build their own individual island to their taste.

I've seen a lot of people who started with New Horizons complaining about how rude and abrasive villagers were when going back to the older games, and even being frusterated with the villagers having rude or unskippable dialogue in New Horizons itself, which I think kind of shows that a lot of the "dumbing down" of the villagers probably is to make them appeal to a broader market. Because the game has a reputation now as a cute innocent soft game popular with teenagers and young adults (especially young adult women who like that sort of thing), I feel like having the villagers be more cute blank slates helps the game be more accessible, at the expense of becoming less unique from player to player.

  • @Robbie_Haruna

Well the Gamecube dialogue is particularly infamous because it was the localization team's fault. They randomly embellished certain things for shits. That's why so many villagers had dialogue where they were just verbally beating you down and sounded like terrible people, even though it massively clashed with the tone of the game. Wild World onward they followed the Japanese script more closely so that's why they're not assholes near as much (though over time they did gradually phase the Cranky and Snooty villagers farther away from functionally being the dickhead and karen personalities.)

Kept getting this as a suggestion so I dived in feet-first. My first game was City Folk, I spent so many hours on that game. Even when I time traveled and grinded out literally everything you could for City Folk, I never felt bored of the game because of all the interactions I could have and things I could do for the villagers. (I know Tama says she didn't play for long, but it does honestly look like it kept a lot of core elements from the earlier games; they pinged me pretty often to send me on trips to give gifts, visit their houses, etc. etc. but it might've been purely friendship level and would've had to have been found out through months of gameplay like Tama says) I then played New Leaf to tide me over before I got my Switch + NH. Again, I grinded out nearly everything right off the bat. I got all the possible town projects, I had huge amount of bells from beetles, etc etc. I didn't feel bored of the game during the month and a half-ish I played it before making the switch, pun slightly intended. Then, New Horizons. I noticed something immediately off the bat for myself. In the older games, I didn't CARE what the villagers looked like. I had some cute ones (bluebear and fang) but I also had some "ugly" ones by today's standards (harry the hippo, and mac the dog come to mind immediately) but I built meaningful friendships with them bc they all seemed so unique and amazing, even if they didn't have such flourishing personalities like animal forest or wild world. In New Horizons... I care purely about the look. They're all SHELLS, so why not pick the best looking ones to keep around? I can talk to 5 Peppys and get the exact same dialog back to back, so why NOT pick the better looking of the 5 to keep around? And when they're shells, it's even easier to shill them out for NMT or bells and not even feel guilty about it. If they're cute and popular but I already have someone of my own tastes on my island, I'm going to sell the cute, popular one for a "quick buck" so to say. I found Audie on a mystery island, but I have Sprinkle who's more my style, so I sold Audie bc I KNEW i could get NMT and bells. The community is exactly like a gacha-game community. I was apart of a gacha-game community for like 2 years and it's almost 1:1 with minor changes to the currency and the slang used. "OMG i just had to spend $50 to get that cute dress for my character" has the same exact energy as "OMG i just spent 300 NMT to find Raymond on a mystery island"

The dialogue in ACNH reminds me of those little bits of text that you'd get when you tapped the speech bubbles above a Mii in Tomodachi Life. But it worked because thats just it: they are short little mundane comments and NOT at all the main dialogue. Very upsetting to see that type of stuff get turned into actual dialogue in this game.
