The mystery of the unseen 'new mayor' in New Leaf is odd when you just stop to realize that whoever was supposed to be the mayor has the exact same name as your character. How else would Isabelle and the villagers think you are the new mayor? for Blather's bug fear if you give him a mantis in New Leaf he recalls a story where a whole bunch of them hatched and flew out of the desk right at him and laments that that specific incident is what kickstarted his fears
Definitely feel like the fountain and the golden ax is a reference to "the honest woodcutter" story from Aesop's Fables
In New Leaf if you put on the King Tut mask, you'd trip while running even if you had a good luck day. It was the same in Wild World, so it's never been connected to your character's luck. I'm pretty sure it's because a lot of people believe that disturbing places where the dead are buried, or taking/possessing their things, is very bad luck.
@gallery3460

I agree with that theory but I've always thought that the mask was simply too heavy for the chracter's head lol
As one of the other commenters said, I think the tripping in the King Tut mask is a reference to the infamous mummy’s curse. Perhaps this could also tie into Lucky’s story & the decor of his home? Maybe Lucky used to lived up to his name, until he brought home a cursed artifact… I have no idea what Farley is, but perhaps he’s a reference to something from Japanese folklore? It wouldn’t be the first time the series has featured yokai; and something with a huge nose & long beard that hangs around wells & is associated with wishes definitely sounds folklore-related.

Serena and Farley both seem to be references to Aesop’s Honest Woodsman (or the Honest Axe) fairy tale in which a woodsman drops his axe into a lake and the god Hermes decides to get it for him but offers him multiple better axes made of silver and gold only for the woodsman to be honest and tell him that they aren’t his axe. After seeing his honesty, Hermes decides to reward him by giving him all three axes. This story has been altered over time though and most modern interpretations (especially those in Japanese media) swap out Hermes with the Lady of the Lake or just another female water spirit. Serena is obviously based on the Lady of the Lake version, used in Japan. Not just based on her being a girl but also her getting angry when you are not honest. Farley seems to be very loosely inspired by the original Hermes version. This makes sense with Farley’s role in the games as Hermes is the god of trade and travel so would naturally take issue if a trade you were tasked with was not completed or if your town was hard to traverse due to trees. Farley also shares his hat with Hermes, as Hermes was regularly depicted with his signature winged cap in pictures and statues. These are pretty much the only traits Farley and Hermes share though but gives enough information for us to make some guesses as to why he was included. Early during localization the Gamecube fountain may have been meant to let you throw your axe into it just like City Folks’ in a bit more of an open reference to the Honest Woodsman story. Obviously you’d need to interact with a character and that may have been the original purpose of Farley. Maybe that would take too much time to develop or would break the game because you could just do it early on and get a really good item so they scrapped it and reworked the character into the final game Farley. Serena’s fountain may have been inspired by those early plans and the Japanese developers decided to replace Farley’s Hermes reference with the more popular and recognizable Lady of Lake reference. Regardless it’s pretty clear that these characters are references to the Honest Woodsman fairytale.

NOTE for those who may not know! Gulliver's name is a reference to a classic novel, Gulliver's travels! Further support for the dimensional travel theory!

The non-villager animals in animal crossing is not a mystery they litterally SHOW HOW IT WORKS ON THE MUSEUM! there's an evolution tree display you can stand in and it has the lines for other anime villagers. Like humans with apes, they have a common ancestor that branched off at some point and now they're different species. This line of thought is basically like an alien looking at an earth zoo and being horrified apes are keeping other apes in cages

I know you said not to talk about Ankha, but, I will state an obscure fact about her. She was even in the "original" Gamecube entry of the Animal Crossing franchise, although not how she is now. She was one of a pool of islander villagers to appear on your town's local island. Basically, at random, you have a single islander to be on your town's local island. This single islander never changes and is merely selected at random after creating your town. Ankha was one of those islanders in that pool of a possible islander you could have on your local island. And, like Ankha, those islanders from the Gamecube release of the game, would have their role(s) changed to being in the pool of regular villagers that could appear in your town. I love Ankha, and not for the "weird" reasons many people do that you were trying to avoid talking about. Her unique design. She is not a mere recolor of the basic cat villager model in character design, unlike most cat villagers. She has a special model just for herself, to have that pharaoh headdress thing attached to her head. I was going to say something more, but I forgot it completely while writing this comment

Ankha is probably related to the king Tut mask or Lucky
5:22 I have the guide that this is referring to, it's the Prima one. One of its sections is a list of names of every villager and special character, with a little picture next to each. The guide was packed with little mistakes like that, it was super confusing as a kid but kinda cool since it made certain things mysterious.

Imagine my surprise to hear my old, defunct Reddit name pop up out of nowhere. Let it be known, the years have only bolstered my conviction that Booster must not be allowed to roam the streets of any decent society.
I’m pretty sure Dr. Shrunk alludes to Frillard possibly being dead in New Leaf, it’s pretty weird how he just never showed up again after City Folk. Also, I always thought the wanted poster outside the police station in the original animal crossing was Team Rocket’s Meowth as a kid, it’s probably Redd though.
I believe the museum explains that sentient animals like villagers are a different branch of evolution.

There's actually a character we got to meet on the rare opportunity back in City Folk (if I recall rightly) that was mentioned to have died in the following game, and that's the other comedian that would sometimes perform instead of Dr Shrunk. I think his name was Frillard? Either this was just a theory I took to be true and never forgot or never heard about being debunked, or it's something overlooked because I don't see too many older players talk about him
i'd say the wanted poster on the outside of the police station is actually Redd's poster. we know he deals in shady black market connections.
What if the Rito from zelda, the bird people, are descendants of Gulliver on his travels? Maybe he met someone special in the zelda universe. Also when he mentions his ship he doesn't really specify what KIND of ship we only assume a boat because of his sailor outfit. The word for boat crew and space ship crew are interchangeable in context. And spaceships do land in the ocean.

Ive seen a few people mention why the King Tut mask does what it does (the mummy's curse), but not many mention another possible reason why. So there is the idea he was insanely unlucky, and thus his item passes that along. @_mollbxo
Жыл бұрын
I was thinking this too that it could be around the speculations of how he died! It was theorised for a long time that King Tut died during a chariot crash where he broke his leg and, due to lack of modern medicine, got blood poising and died. He did have a broken leg when he died, but there are no records of a ‘crash’ in Egyptian history, so this is now not as widely accepted. He did, however, have a club foot and other skeletal issues so it could still be that the broken leg was what caused his death at a young age 🤷🏻♀️
@MasterPlan1P
Жыл бұрын
@@_mollbxo also true! his death is very interesting because it could be many things, the chariot accident also being possible. but none of them are natural, which makes it all the more intriguing!
Kinda surprised so many don't know this: The mask being unlucky is a reference to King Tut's Curse. It was believed to have afflicted the people who unearthed Tutankhamen's tomb or were involved in the expedition or handled his mummy. Of the 9 people affected, 2 died of sepsis, 1 from pneumonia, 1 from an unspecified illness, 1 in a fire, 1 under "suspicious circumstances", and 1 by suicide. The other 2 survived but the first had his house destroyed twice (once by fire, once by flood), and the other came home to discover his pet canary had been eaten by a cobra, a symbol of the pharoahs. So uh, yeah, pretty unlucky batch of people.
the captions YES thank you I can’t hear the best so I seriously appreciate it ❤️ dope video
With the villagers and catchable animals weirdness… I always just figured it was a case of divergent evolution, similar to apes and humans. Frog villagers and catchable frogs have a common ancestor, but aren’t the same species. I sort of figured Animal Crossing was a world where humans weren’t the only species to evolve to our level of intelligence, and that other species did as well and that’s what we have human-sized animals coexisting with humans as neighbors. I think in the most recent game the museum also has some sort of evolution chart showing something similar? Haven’t played it in a while so I’m not sure.
I would definitely consider process of elimination to be a form of evidence in support of Rover being the secret mayor. Since he's the only character with the information required to set up the events of the game, since he's on the train and not already in the town, and since he's a character that doesn't seem like they'd choose to be mayor but might be important enough to be offered the job, I think this is completely reasonable to believe. It obviously can't be proven, but it makes a lot more sense than any other candidate we see in the games, which simply have no possible relation to this secret mayor at all. The only alternative to him, as far as I can tell, would be a character who is entirely new and unrelated to any of the games or characters so far, which... why would they even bother to do that? lol.
It’s actually not a luck thing.. In wild world when I was in grade 9 my friend mentioned this about the mask. It turns out Tut apprently broke his leg, fell and died.. Im Quite sure it’s a reference to HIS misfortune not bad luck.. I always had AMAZING Turnip prices back in the day regardless. you can do it from running back and forth in the snow and you leave a face plant mark on the ground in wild world as well
Maybe the turkey villager is anxious in earlier games because you're a human and it's mostly humans that eat turkey. Then in later games he's cool with you because he learned you don't eat him
Fun fact! Joan actually does appear in New Horizons outside of the amiibo function. 23:53 "Owls named Greg" 😂
I might be able to shed some light on why Blathers hates bugs. I remember when I was a kid playing City Folk, if you gave Blathers a specific bug (can’t remember what it was) he’ll tell you a story about when he was in school and an egg sac of this specific bug burst and millions of baby insects swarmed his desk. He’s been traumatized by bugs ever since. Edit: Just looked it up and apparently it was a mantis egg that hatched and they swarmed him. Poor guy.
The King Tut mask thing is a reference to the alleged curse of Pharaoh Tutankahmun. Some of the people who rediscovered his tomb (and therefore “disturbed” it) and other people related to objects taken from it are said to have died under mysterious circumstances or sudden bouts of illness, leading some people to speculate there was a curse placed on his resting place to protect it. That’s why the player trips when they wear the mask, it’s a pilfered artifact from his tomb and therefore gives the player bad luck due to the curse.
The Animal City album cover is a snapshot of the City itself, which does indeed have a stone statue of Serena in the center of its fountain

The first thing that came to mind about the King Tut mystery is the fact that he had a cleft foot and required a cane. Maybe that's why?
Lmao I love how you say "In the original animal crossing game Gulliver shows up on the beach" but the sub titles say "In the original game Gulliver shows up drunk off his ass on the beach" Hilarious
Very interesting! Also mysterious is the fact that I'm watching this while playing ACNH. While you're talking about Roswell, I pick up a message in a bottle on the beach, open it up, and...uh...it's from Roswell! No kidding! LOL
Hi! Nice video, you had lots of interesting points. I have been told the Tut mask falls when you run because it's solid gold and is too heavy, just that simple. and what's interesting about Gulliver and Gullivarrr is if you are a new character talking to Gulliver; the first few times that you're trying to wake him up and he's responding in sleep his name shows as Gulliver and it's not until he wakes up that it all of a sudden change to gullivarrr! I thought that was very interesting. And while you are correct The Fountains don't seem to do anything but when the hour strikes the fountain will change its flow, all of them do. kind of neat. And interesting about whether the residents die or not; with the update if you go to the hospital Joan is in there every Monday and will actually give you turnips.
I dont think gulliver is an alien cuz in one of his lines in animal crossing new horizons he says; "Dont send me back to space!!, its cold and dark and-"

rewatching this video, "have you ever wondered if villagers could die?" yes. In the days of Wild World, I remember going online and asking if you didn't give medicine to a sick villager every day, would they die. The answer is, of course, no... but it's interesting to think about.
As someone who is also scared of bugs, I never questioned why Blathers was scared of bugs. There doesn't need to be an explanation. Also I love my GC statue, and I haven't seen it but I love yours too! That game was really great. Love the video!
I'm sure someone else has mentioned it, but the king tut thing is probably a reference to the curse that was believed to afflict the people that discovered the tomb or something to that effect anyways. You'd probably have to ask a dev for clarification, but I'm sure that's all it is.
Gulliver when I first met him quoted the Windfish from Zelda: Link's Awakening. And considering space is basically a vast "ocean", and we refer to Rockets AS "Rocket Ships", and he always winds up off his "ship"... I think Gulliver might be a Space-Pirate-God, like Thor.
I'm glad you got to have a sponsor :)

I always thought that whenever they wear the King Tut mask, they'd only trip and fall because of how big and heavy it is on their heads. 😅
I remember seeing in a video, a game theory video I believe, that said in Lucky's Japanese description on his Ecard, he died when he was torn up in the rotors of a fishing boat during a fishing accident.
Joan is referenced by her granddaughter when she leaves an island review mentioning "gram-gram's knees" and she can also be encountered outright after you build the hospital in Happy Home Paradise DLC on Mondays, in the hospital itself.
I always felt that Zipper is one of your villagers in disguise, just a speculation. 😶

I think that's been disprove of because you can see all villagers at the same time as Zipper..so it cannot be any character in the game that can live in your town or a shop keeper or even Isabell, it's someone else

@@testerwulf3357 interesting 🤔
Your TV room's got the most spectecular tapestry I've ever seen in New Horizons 🤩
"Franklin is worried that some one might eat him, but he warms up in later games" A really poor choice of words, my friend. 24:13
The King Tut's mask making you unlucky is probably just a reference to the myth surrounding its finding in real life. The story goes that Howard Carter's find of King Tut's tomb was followed by a mysterious series of deaths among his crew and their loved ones, starting with his dog dying on the other side of the globe at the same time that the tomb was unsealed.
28:28 I've always found it adorable that Blathers is afraid of insects. I like to think that he's too kind and innocent to ever wanna eat or even hurt one, DESPITE BEING AN OWL.
On the topic of non-returning characters from previous games being dead, this is most likely true for Frillard from City Folk because in New Leaf, Dr. Shrunk occasionally mentions how he misses him.

I'm pretty sure Shrunk was Frillard's mentor so I'm inclined to believe that Frillard moved on once he learned all he needed to from Shrunk, but I don't remember any of his dialogue from when I played new leaf so I could definitely be wrong
Fun fact: Joan shows up at the hospital in HHP on Mondays and Nat can show up at your school to teach you about how to use bugs in your builds
I'm dying loving the Unsolved Mysteries title!!!
Im Happy You Upload Quite A Lot , Some Ytbers Leave For Months And Upload Acting Like Nothing Happened
Well I am super late to the party here, but oh my god, talk about homage! You did such a cool little intro that is not the same but subtly references the actual "Unsolved Mysteries" logo. I've been binging a lot of your vids lately, as a new fan of the game and of your channel. But that bit made me feel slightly less ancient in comparison to the average player, so thank you for that lol
You tripped in New Leaf too with the King Tut Mask
The Serena fountain is also already in the City in City Folk. That's what the album is referencing.
Timmy and Tommy are Tom nook's apprentices. I've never heard about him adopting them.

He's actually their uncle :)

@@beausweater No he isn't. In Wild World, Tom Nook explains to the player that Timmy and Tommy are not related to him by blood, and thinks of them as his pupils and himself as the mentor

@@ISoloYouRelax oh interesting! I always thought they are his nephews and I thought it was mentioned in one of the games as well. It also could've been an error in translation since I played the German versions as a kid but I'm not sure

They're children, for them to be living with him he had to of adopted them; however that doesn't mean he sees them as sons or that they see him as a dad, I'd imagine the adoption was done just so they can legally work under him and he can apprentice them not to make them a family :]
farley looks like a gnome to me
You should make a video on all of the references and themes in the villagers (like Marlo’s godfather theme and Roswell’s alien theme)
LOLLLL THE SNOWMEN GETTING SASSY IS SO HILARIOUS
11:47 I see that caption about Gulliver showing up drunk! I see you lol
i always thought the tripping in the king tut mask was because you couldn't see in it haha
The King Tut mask is made of gold. You'd think it would be heavy to the point where you inevitably trip and fall.
To be fair, Zipper.T.Bunny could be a plush bunny of some kind because we do have some non-animal villagers like stitches for example. He’s a plush toy bear. So that’s my theory on him.
The King Tut mask is rather possessed by a bad luck mummy, or it’s just really heavy.
Hahahah, good ol' Gulliver. Had to pause and check that I read that correctly 😂
Blathers is scared of insects due to a trauma he mentions in Wild World! He remembers his mom eating bugs then regurgitate them to feed her babies, it disgusted Blathers and he can only think of his mom eating bugs and puking to feed him.
You missed an excellent chance to use the Unsolved Mysteries theme. "Isabelle has since served her time and has been released."
the Serena mysterie might be a throwback to older Harvest Moon games where you also could throw your axe into a lake or fountain. Some of Animal Crossing Devs worked on those Harvest Moon games as well
You might fall with the King Tut mask because it's made of solid gold and is too heavy, causing you to become unbalanced and fall (especially because the weight is on your head and only your head). That's what I always thought anyway.
I always thought the reason you would wear the king tut mask and trip was because it was made of straight up Gold gold is heavy
The bad luck mechanic does make you trip and fall if you have bad health. Not just the King Tut mask.
