The Evolution of the Toyota UZ Engine (Explained)

The Toyota UZ engine family is one of the more popular V8 engine families that Toyota ever made, and today we're going to take a deep look at the UZ engine family, including the 1UZ-FE, 2UZ-FE, and 3UZ-FE.

Correction - 1UZ and 3UZ technically have 6 bolt main caps, not 4 bolt main caps. They have two side bolts per cap which I completely forgot about when writing this 😐 (mistakes happen).

I am planning to install IUZ or 3UZ for my cruiser 1969 ford mustang. Which engine you would recommend? I am not looking for high horsepower but would enjoy some torque. Also, planning to install the Ford Cobra supercharger in the future. Both full engines can be found relatively cheap and will to search for the best year and configuration. Planning to make it 5 speed manual too using Hilux R155F transmission with 2006 Camry V6 flywheel and clutch ..etc. Any recommendation would help 😊

To summarize Go for a 1UZ for Boost Builds Avoid the 2UZ for any Builds Enjoy the 3UZ For N/A Builds Not that im biased owning a LS430 but i would say the 3uz give the best middle ground between HP/Torque is met by the 3UZ It's the best for ITB's and sounds the best when combined with Equal length headers and a x pipe (maserati 4700 vibes)

You caught the main caps that are 6 bolt, but also one important distinction about the difference between 1UZ heads and 3UZ heads is the flow. 1UZ flow 125cfm per cylinder in stock form which is dismal. 3UZ heads flow 236cfm per cylinder stock form which is over double. You can only make so much power with 125cfm. Even with boost. HRE in NZ got 270cfm out of a ported 1UZ head to make 500WHP N/A. He told me he got over 300cfm out of a 3UZ head and with revised compression ratios could hit ~600WHP N/A with ITB's and good headers.

My classic first car the 1990 Lexus ES250 had the legendary 2VZ-FE. V6 DOHC 160hp 160ft lb torque and ran that son of a gun over 300k with basic maintenance. Piston rings weren't exactly in the best condition towards the end so when going downhill then reaching the bottom of a hill and launching from a flat start it definitely blew a blue puff of smoke but that just gave it character. Vave guides were somehow not leaking. It also had the rare 5 speed manual which I did have to replace the flywheel and clutch which is normal but the synchros were going out from 2nd to 3rd so it was a 2 second shift. Some kids threw a bunch of rocks at it at night and it totalled it out. It was my first car many many years ago and it hurt when I had to replace it, but I traded it in for a 2006 G35s coupe. Kept the shifter knob and will always keep that thing until I loose it.

Is a 1992 Lexus ls 400 1UZ-FE engine an interference engine?I just paid to have the engine replaced due to the belt breaking. I have a feeling I got scammed the engine only had 124 k miles on it. Thanks

If an engine with a shorter stroke make hp higher up. Why does the 89 Mustang GT (3 inch) peak at 4200 rpm? The 2011 5.0 GT (3.65 inch) and peak at 6500 rpm.

@@gava7691 Better heads will increase hp but they don't control where the engine make peak hp. Before you say I'm wrong. Think about this. An 89 5.0 made 225 hp @ 4200 rpm. People added superchargers and the engine made 300 hp but it still peaked @ 4200 rpm.

just to make a correction, 1990-1994 1UZ = Non interference. 1995-1997 Non VVTI = interference. 1998+ VVTi = interference. There is tons of confusion on it, but there are the facts. Lexus/toyota can confirm. More years are interference than not.

The 2UZ crank has 1 less main bearing than the 1UZ-3UZ making it impossible use the 4.7 crank so there aren't any "stroker" 3UZ Engines out there.

The lighter rotating assembly they put in for 95 and 96. Thinner rods that aren't good for boost. If boosting and not building the bottom end you want a 89 to 94 1uz
