The Evolution of the Over-Under Guard Pass in BJJ

Спорт

How to over-under guard pass has changed over the years, fromThe Pressure Passing System (www.grapplearts.com/pressure). In this video 6th degree black belt Fabio Gurgel shows how the over-under pass was created as a natural combination of the stack pass and the torreando pass, and then how it has continued to change to adapt to new ways of countering this position. This is a fascinating glimpse into the history of BJJ.

This is why Alliance created bjj monsters. The level of analysis by Fabio is amazing and this would be the programming language for Marcelo Garcia.

Great breakdown. Question: I still like to set up the pass with the underhooked leg over my shoulder. One problem I run into is that once I step over the bottom leg, my partner stiff arms my head and shoots the reverse/inverted triangle (braulio Estima style). How can I adjust my position to prevent that?

The other leg that I dive under on is always harder for me. They'll scoot back and post their shin in my arm and I can't keep my head on their hip

face. I’m sure there is a fix for this but it’s hard to prescribe a solution without actually seeing how you’re doing it wrong. What do your training partners say you could do to improve this pass?

@@StephanKesting thanks for replying. Against whites and blues I can usually get it. a purple belt I had trouble passing tho told me my head just wasn't glued to his hip enough, and suggested I get it so deep that my head is actually touching the mat. I might be missing the suffocating shoulder pressure aspect too. I feel like most of my weight is either my head on their hip, or me sprawling out on their leg.

It definitely is. All that's different is the grips. You're hugging tight instead of grabbing the gi pants. Everything else is virtually the same.
