The early seats didn’t look so hot. They must have been uncomfortable. Thank god for evolution. Great video.
There are old premium Model S seats that came with two back seats and a centre console for rear passengers too. My favorite is the Gen 4 Ventilated white seats. Thx for the video!

Yes those are the executive rear seats, which were so short lived I didn't bother including them.
Thank you! *Exactly* what I was looking for.
Very useful video, thanks a lot.
thank you so much for this!!! this video is exactly what i was looking for.
Great overview, thanks! I have Gen 2 seats, and I agree that they become uncomfortable on drives over 2 hours.
Excellent video. Informative, illustrative with the right amount of detail. Thank you.
Excellent video. I have the gen 3 seats in my Model S and really like them. They do get uncomfortable on long drives though. I've driven a few loaners with gen 1 and 2 seats and can barely stand them. They're very uncomfortable with minimal padding.
Thank you very much for the video and explanation! 👍
Great and very informative video! Info seems unbiased, which is incredibly hard to come by these days :)
Excellent summary. Thanks! Good research.
Your videos are well made, keep up the great work
Very nice video, thanks !
Truly well made informative video!
Great content - very helpful!
very helpful guide. thanks much.
very well done! great comparison.
Great video, a nice break down!
Thanks! Very helpful.
Thanks - very useful info for the used Model S buyer
Great job loved it
I have gen 4 on my P100D and the gen 2 on my 85D. I like the softness of gen 4 but would have liked a bit less bolstering, it’s a lot more than gen 2. I regularly drive both cars.
@BlackTesla

Interesting, I had gen 2 on the S then had the opportunity to upgrade and went with gen 3 because gen 2 is harsh for long drives but gen 4 doesn't hug me as much as I'd like.
great compare, thanks!
Next gen. (gen.3) seats make it harder to get in and out of the Model S due to the increased bolsters. Easy access, if one chooses to use it, helps to an extent by moving the seat and the steering column. Also if one lives in a warm climate, they should definitely consider either the textile or the perforated/ventilated seats as the solid leather/fake leather makes the seats very hot and sweaty.

The high bolsters are also subject to more wear and tear. My used 2015 MS was a demo for 1300 miles and 3 months, you can see a lot of wrinkles on the front pass seat outer bolster.
If I have done my research correctly, I believe the ventilated/perforated seats were available on NON performance model s' for a limited time with what is called the "premium seats." This is slightly different from gen 4 (premium interior) in that it doesn't have the "comfort" rear seat. From my limited research, these were available on the 90d, towards the end of it's life, which I mainly figured out by every used 2017 90d having them when browsing inventory.
Great overview, explains why my loaners felt different!
Thanks looking into 2016 or 17, this was helpful

Very helpful video. Thanks for all the info. One question, do both the front seats have lumbar support?

Great video with tons of info. I have been looking a while for this kind of information. Question though: when did Model S get the sets with the electric adjustable headrest? As in, month/year? Any idea?
@BlackTesla

They came out ~Aug 2016
i remember someone saying that the first gen seats were crap driving seats but apparently were incredible comfortable while sitting in the car resting i.e. at a supercharger or while taking a quick nap/rest.
@BlackTesla
5 жыл бұрын
I think it's all relative, but I've never met anyone that has gen 1 and thought it was superior to any of the other gen seats...all I hear is how much more comfortable all other seats are over gen 1. But again everyone is different so definitely possible.
I just sat in the Model X seats today as I am considering a new Model X purchase. I am tall, so the head rest has to be raised up to max, but the bottom of the headrest ended up cutting into the back of my neck at the shoulder. Not very pleased with them, as it is very uncomfortable.
Now I know why the Next Gen coathooks I bought from Tesla do not fit. Despite what my cars build records say, I have Gen 3. Great video.
How do adjust the headrests
Does the referral code still work 2 years later ? (Edit) yup it does now I just need enough money to buy one 😂

Yep still working whenever you're ready!
Excellent video; at last I understand the whole Gamut of Model S seats. However, I remain a little confused about build year, model year and registration year particularly because here in the UK we get Teslas much later (and pay so much more) than you guys in the US. So, is it possible to identify by VIN number if a used S 75D, advertised as 2017 in the UK actually has the 4th Generation Premium seats? Thank you Black Tesla.
@BlackTesla
2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching. Just use a Tesla VIN decoder and you should be able to source when your car was made. TeslaTap has a good one. Cheers.
I dont see a referral code?
Thanks for video trying to buy used model s and tough to figure whats what
@BlackTesla

Any used S after 2015 is a safe bet, meaning you won't get bad or uncomfortable seats and build quality will be much better than 2012-2015 so 75D, 85D, 90D, 100D. Note some 90kwh packs have her poor degradation so proceed with caution there.

@@BlackTesla Thanks BT...btw not sure if you can answer this... do you know what the interior upgrades package used to include? were all the seats same quality but only the different color configurations made the car more expensive?
What about the new black textile seats. Do you know if they are as well hydrophobic protected as the premium leatherette seats? If the textile seats are not as well protected, do you have any suggestions of how to keep them protected from spills? Does the color of the textile rub off noticeably?
@BlackTesla
5 жыл бұрын
I've had limited time with the textile seats but in that time I noticed that they are not hydrophobic on the textile parts so liquid would absorb through. However, since they are black no stains are visible. I'm not sure how you would protect them other than putting a material over the seats. As far as cleaning them the same practices applied, vacuum, rubbing alcohol should be straightforward. Nothing rubbed off but I only had about 5 days with them, and didn't try white pants, but did try khakis.
On the Tesla Model X, are all 6 seats ventilated or just the front seats because on the 6 seat with center console configuration I configured, all 6 seats are heated. So i'm wondering if all 6 seats are both heated and ventilated. I plan on getting a P100D with the red multi coat exterior, black 22 inch wheels, and white premium interior.
@BlackTesla
5 жыл бұрын
I believe on the front seats are cooled although all seats are heated.
Tesla should incorporate adjustable bolsters into their seats like Mercedes and others have done
Interesting and surprising for me too see just how much Tesla has developed their seats. Thanks a lot. Makes choosing between new or used so much easier.
Do the rear seats in the S Model fold flat? If so, are there particular years/trims I should look for? Thanks!
@BlackTesla
2 жыл бұрын
All Model S variants rear seats fold flat. The exception would be any rare Model S with the executive rear seat option. Also 2021/22+ Model S (refresh) do not fold completely flat there is a slight grade on the folded seats, not a big deal but noticeable.
Great video. Is it possible to swap from gen3 to gen4? I love the softness and style of gen4 but i'm worried about wiring and airbag control. I image is impossible to get headrest position working, but would be great to have gen4 also without that possibility
@BlackTesla
2 жыл бұрын
Thank you, not possible from a wiring perspective
@iPhoneAppReviewer
Жыл бұрын
It is possible to get the headrest adjustment to work, it’s actually really easy, there’s a big thread on TMC about it. The main issue with retrofitting gen4 is that the seat adjustment switch panel sticks out too much and doesn’t fit. You’ll need to source a custom made switch panel.

@iPhoneAppReviewer

@@sparklingtesla no warnings.
Tall people might hate Gen 4 - when sitting up, the bottom of the headrest (that sticks forward inexplicably) may stick into your upper back/lower neck and create a pressure point. Tesla got rid of this in 2020. Thank fk.
I have a question, In the facelift Model S there are six types of seats listed in epc.tesla.com, even within those their are listings for Luxury and Premium. What is the difference between the Luxury and Premium seats in the Model S?
@BlackTesla
4 жыл бұрын
Can you send a link, not seeing luxury on each. There should only be base, performance, signature, next gen, and premium.
Super nice video.. I’m in the market for a used Tesla and trying to figure out if the seats i see are leather or vegan leather. The original purchase sheet doesn’t say and the seller says its leather but he didn’t sound so confident. I would prefer the vegan leather. It’s a early 2017 model x p100d. Any ideas on how to check?
@BlackTesla
4 жыл бұрын
Tesla didn't use "vegan"/synthetic leather seats until the introduction of the Tesla Premium seats mid-2017. To tell whether the car you are looking at has Tesla Premium seats look for the adjustable headrest. If it can adjust then its Tesla premium and is synthetic leather. If not then its likely real leather.
Does "textile" mean cloth seats? Is textile shown anywhere in this video?
@BlackTesla
3 жыл бұрын
Textile is the cloth, seen as the 2nd seat in the beginning of the video also seen as a variant of GEN2 seats

Good question and yes. Based on the year they were released. Cars that were built 2012-2014 can have Gen 1 and 2 seats. Built 2014 - 2016 can have Gen 2 and Gen 3 seats. All cars after 2017/2018 can have Gen 4+

They need to bring back the ventilated seats
@BlackTesla

As of 2019 they bought back the perforated seats but I don't believe they are ventilated as in cooled. They used a suction-based system for cooling the seats instead of blowing cool air out.
Damn, cool video...too bad I already purchased my used Model S

Was, once again, considering purchasing a used Tesla but even a quick dip into research just shows too many flaws. This was an excellent video but why spend a lot of money for poor quality?

Which flaws are deal breakers for you?
Nice thx, but I could do without the constant thumping muzak in the background, verry disturbing.
If you are going to spend over $100,000 on a model s or x you should receive a car with a much more luxurious interior including real leather seats and better gadgets like they have in premium ICE cars of the same value.
@BlackTesla
5 жыл бұрын
I hear you, and a lot of people say that. However, you're forgetting the cost of the technology (motors, batteries, touch screens, falcon wing doors, auto closing doors, etc) that's what you're paying $100k for. If they then add high-end seats, massage seats, etc the cost would be north of $150k. There is a trend happening now where Tech is the new luxury. When the cost of the tech cones down then they can add more traditional luxury elements. Just something to consider.
So just to be clear, Tesla seats are vegan right?
@BlackTesla
2 жыл бұрын
They are as of the Next Gen seats. Prior seats were leather as was the steering wheel. Next Gen and beyond have both vegan "leather" for seats and wheel.
