The Evolution Of Tesla | CNBC Marathon

CNBC Marathon takes a look back at the evolution of Tesla.
Elon Musk is the most famous CEO of Tesla, but he’s not the company’s founder. Martin Eberhard and Marc Tarpenning founded the company in 2003 and were the original executives. CNBC sat down with them to talk about the idea for Tesla Motors, the battery, Elon Musk and building its first car, the all-electric Roadster.
Next, the Roadster was Tesla’s first car. And with only 2,450 made and an estimated 1,500 left, it’s an endangered species. But a die-hard group of early adopters and fans are passionate about keeping the EV-maker’s original electric car alive.
Lastly, Elon Musk has promised driverless cars since 2016, but ‘full-self driving’ (FSD) is not even close to a fully autonomous vehicle yet. The beta program is heavily scrutinized by regulators and has earned Tesla side-eye from competitors, who usually have professionally trained drivers, not customers, test driver assist features in their vehicles. But for now, FSD Beta still available for thousands of Tesla owners to access, without the knowledge of drivers and pedestrians around them.
CNBC Marathon brings together the best of CNBC’s coverage on Tesla and its evolution.

So FSD didn’t warn you to pay attention on a closed course with nothing going on around you? Did they try testing it in a more active environment? Also yes FSD sucked then, because that’s Beta. What you need to look at is the level improvements over time.

Conventional cars that are electrically powered only solve one problem: local-source pollution. All of the problems associated with automobile-dependent suburban sprawl remain. We need to give more attention to the following: building and enhancing dedicated-guideway transportation systems (rail, B.R.T., and other modes, including the innovative); creating pedestrian-friendly, mixed-use, and transit-oriented development with form-based codes that use rural-to-urban Transect Zones; optimizing freeways for express buses and for goods movement through conversions of mixed-flow lanes to H.O.V., through dedicated on- and off-ramps, and through variable speed limits; expanding infrastructure shared by bicycles and Neighborhood Electric Vehicles (N.E.V.'s) that includes protected intersections, as well as lanes protected by parked cars, street trees, etc.; traffic calming and road diets; smart parking policy including on-street parking with variable pricing and associated P./B.I.D. formation and enhancement; secure bicycle parking; highway-to-boulevard conversions; subscription-based sharing of bicycles, N.E.V.'s, and, to a lesser extent, conventional (electric) cars; and, promotion of N.E.V.'s over conventional (electric) cars. N.E.V.'s have regulated speeds, and the vehicles have intentionally limited range, which helps stop and reverse sprawl. Conventional electric cars are the wrong solution. They may be able to offer some taxi services that can help people become more multimodal, but, ultimately, this mode should be considered a last resort when people do select a way to travel for each trip. To that end, the governments should also be finding ways to decrease the fixed costs of car ownership and increase the variable (e.g., free/discounted transit with driver licenses and/or car registration, fare structures integrated across transit agencies, pay-as-you-drive car insurance with V.M.T. taxation administered through insurance companies, Pigouvian taxation with universal rebates disbursed from the proceeds, lower car-registration costs, lower licensing costs, cash-out policies for free/subsidized parking, etc.).

FSD Beta is much better now than it was here. It improved that much likely because it was used by the public as it improved with the clear understanding that they have to pay attention and be ready to take over at any time. It's still not good enough to be a robotaxi but it's much better than you see in this video. It still has it's stupid moves but they aren't really dangerous. They annoy other drivers though.

No. Warren Buffet would single handedly be the worlds greatest investor. Charlie Munger might argue that. But together, they make Berkshire Hathaway. So. You already forgot about 1 other person; Charlie. In Elons case, who do you think you forgot? Buckets and buckets of engineers! And some of them are very key individuals and without them, Elon by himself would be nothing. But Warren, will always be successful all by himself.

Musk solved the problem of mass production at scale and pushed the company to become something futuristic that goes way beyond automotive. Tesla has risked going bankrupt multiple times, the worst point in the whole company's history was during the great recession, which is exactly when Musk took over as CEO (2008). In other words, Musk as CEO brought Tesla from basically bankruptcy to reaching 1 trillion market cap and entering the S&P 500. This point wasn't highlighted at all in the video.

I should of dumped my tesla stocks earlier this year. Tesla is no longer unique and everyone and their mom makes EV's now. On top of that, Elon can tank share prices by tweeting something crazy on twitter. Sitting at 100% return and not doing anything was dumb move by me.

Tesla was never as amazing as their fans would have you believe. There is nothing they can do that Toyota VW Mercedes and Honda couldn't. Once governments mandated that ICE be replaced by EVs it was obvious the other car companies would produce EVs. The talk of Tesla possessing decades technological lead was pure fantasy.

@@almac9203 - okay so why is it that Tesla is the only EV maker outside of China that makes a profit on their EVs and the major automakers cannot? Why do Tesla’s weight less, get the best range per kWh, can be built in a third the time it takes VW, and autopilot works on any road without having to manually map the roadway beforehand.

Don’t sell them yet. I’ve had Tesla stock since 2016 and it’s always been volatile. This is the worst dip so far, but it will most likely spike again. I’ve made a good profit just from riding the waves.

@@legostud you are a Tesla fanboy and are going to be disappointed to discover that Tesla is not decades in front nor do they have some alien technology. The opposition is coming for Tesla because the government has pretty much mandated the end of ICE. The other car producers simply produce better quality cars and it is only a matter of time till they swamp Tesla. BTW the range advantage you prattle on about is an illusion. Edmunds and Car and Driver have done real world testing on different EVs and the theoretical range advantage shrinks or disappears.

@PN I didn't confuse anything but thanks for your input. I've watched the last few times he's went on stage for Tesla lying about what can be done with the tesla truck and so on. Dude goes out and makes all these bogus ass claims and guess what people are gonna go to better and cheaper options. Tesla is more of a status symbol than a good vehicle option and with all the auto makers some with over 100 yrs of experience coming in its not a good look.

@@TritiumMedia Tesla value is better than any of the OEM. If you think makers like GM or Ford or Mercedes is better then you are solely mistaken by buying into the narrative they have 100 years of making cars. They have so many recalls and payout billions in warranty and recalls claims each year which doesn't scream quality either. There are many hints how challenging it is for the legacies to make EV profitable. Stellantis said EV are 50% more expensive to build. GM said their EVs won't be profitable until 2025 and that is their guess and that is with $7,500 EV rebate. Ford isn't profitable with their current EVs, they needed to raise prices more than twice already. Toyota reluctant to transit to EV and would rather focus on hybrid. Why? Because they know the challenge ahead of them. All this while Tesla is making extreme profit this year. Final words, in 2021 Tesla net profit was about $5.5B. Toyota 2021 net profit about $15.1B. 2022 Tesla expected net profit leapfrog to about $14B. While Toyota will be about the same as last year since no growth. Tesla profit will be nearly the same as Toyota who sells 8 times more cars than Tesla. Think about it more. I am not propping up Tesla, just looking at the numbers.
