I always wanted more roleplay options since Payday 2 came out honestly. I'd love for a Mastermind to be able to increase the time between waves by trading prisoners, or have more routes cut off without a technician or ghost to pick locks. A nice mix of linear experiences and sandbox puzzles is what I want, I've felt like a lot of the Linear Era couldn't keep me entertained beyond one or two runs. You've leapt out of one military carrier, you'd leapt out of them all y'know?

That's why I have multiple builds each with their distinctive specifics and roles, not a fucking shotgun_overkill-crit-dodge-sniper. 4, to be exact. A muscle perk deck build that I call Heavyweight that tanks shit ton of damage that doesn't rely on small aid kits due to regeneration of Muscle and more relies on heavy, hard punching guns, bringing RPG to a bank robbery and more ammo for infinite ammo. Other is Technician that speeds up monotone wait with his saw and has shotguns for self-defence so the team would get maximum payday in short amount of time (but sometimes goes nuts and brings grenade launchers and Predator 12G with Dragon's Breath rounds because folded SPAS-12 with Dragon's Breath is iconic :D). Third one is Crew Chief that buffs team's characteristics with his existence and makes the best out of hostage situation, bringing more elegant sniper rifles for long distance relationships. Because he's Manipulator, as I call him, and manipulators are always behind the chaos. Fourth is a stealthy boy :D

To be entirely honest, the reason we’ve moved so far away from allowing things like C4 and the Saw into builds is mostly because of Death Sentence (or One Down as it was called when that difficulty released) basically forced you to bring Doc Bags. So in turn less and less heists had heavy emphasis on these other tools to accommodate for the fact that everyone and their mother was bringing the necessary meds.

I really like the favors style of preplanning, it gives way more options to tweak how you approach a heist way more than just clicking "buy all assets", but I agree it often leads to just picking the "correct" option. PD3 should absolutely expand on preplanning, make it more dynamic with what favors you get, variety of options, maybe even properly planning out the heist and objective steps instead of always needing to drill into this door to hack the computer to open the other door to hack that computer.

  • @woblewoble

Random thought days later, maybe a good way to influence heist difficulty in ways other than just increasing numbers, take a page out of old-school games and add additional objectives needed to complete the heist. Normal difficulty, just drill through the safe and get the contents out, Very Hard you need to wait for a timelock before drilling, highest difficulty you need to set up a bigger drill and maintain it. Keeps things dynamic between difficulties, each step up in difficulty is a little more challenging and complex without having to just slam players into a DPS wall.

I love the modern heists. Lost in transit, mountain master, black cat, dragon heist, buluc's mansion, they are amazing on stealth. When I still discover new mechanics after playing them a lot. Like in mountain master you can unlock ladders between the roof and the balcony, or that the guards disappear after the fire alarm. Or the many shortcuts/parkours on lost in transit. Or the 2 entirely different entries in bulucs mansion.

I really wish the utility aspect of early Payday 2 comes back in PD3. That and the idea of stealth heists drew me into the game in the first place and was something totally unique to the payday series at the time. I think a good was of balancing the way utility is used within heists could be having the saw and more ecms/trip mines be purchasable in the pre-planning menu and show up in-heist, similar to the grenade case. That way Overkill can know when they will be used if at all. Also I think heists should be even more non-linear then they are, and completely agree with how bad the objectives are communicated to the player. Something like FWB where you could hack 2 boxes before getting into the security room. It rewards experienced players and could teach new players what to do early.

It is so rare in modern payday that you disscus what you are gonna do as everyone just brings their build and solos their way through. at most you check that one player has drill skills I mean some of my favourite moments is my friend bringing c4 and me sentries and locking down day 2 of hoxton breakout, A way of playing you can't really do in a lot of maps

As someone who almost exclusively plays solo, sacrificing my only deployable for C4 or one of my weapons for the otherwise useless saw can be crippling; especially since I never really play meta builds. Something about the modern ear which I find really weird is that the game is much less serious, it's goofy having this bright ranch with lime green gas covering every inch of your screen and the marshals just look out of place amongst the normal enemies. Not that this is a bad thing but it is such a departure from the old much more gritty and brutal feeling Hotline Miami and Big Bank and Gold Grin, which is especially odd being that those three have these big comedic set pieces. Hotline Miami is just a reference, the Golden Grin is in this bright casino with a giant mask as a logo at the entrance and Big Bank has you drop a piggy bank from a crane and yet those heists feel serious unlike more modern additions.

man, after seeing this, I have realized that I haven't really used my C4/Saw build in a LONG time. It just doesn't really feel worth it, unless you are playing heists closer to the games release. back in 2015 on Xbox one me and the boys always discussed builds that we would design, so that everyone offered different utility and covered each others weaknesses. You just don't really see that anymore. Payday 3 really should bring back more of those utilities and teamwork. Great vid BTW, always love your content

Well,i was looking on steam page of Payday 3 and i even mentioned there i hope Pd3 will be more like Pd2 started. PD2 used to be more unique and i do think the video explains so perfect these aspects.Money used to be more important same as loot, now you are getting ao much you rarerly care what you playing/doing or extra loot. Levels were much better and immersive. You had FBI rescue team in between waves and all that files photos assetss and heists designs felt great like you and the gang really plan and execute a heist.Classic heists framing frame watchdogs were nice When they added death wish diff with the trailer new units a story behind cops bringing new units for your dangerous crew, new files and tazer they were awesome and felt so unique now there are 6 diff levels, units are the same more hp and dmg its so boring. Same with skills it really used to be more enaging what everybody bringing ammo meds saw c4,you are a crew of 4 heisters at the end so everybody has its role. Now everybody needs to play along inspire and others "od approved build"... I hope Pd3 makes you feel again like a real heister with crew planning and stuff and that the game will be more complex and unique.More complex police aproach withmaybe fbi rescue team coming back and a mechanic where hostages matter and maybe cops will change approach as diff levels increase and that there is a solid reason we see new cops new guns and heists not just to be to speed run them and just have more dmg bullet sponges. I do like going in just shooting everything as sincer some years thats all i am doing but id like to see old approach coming back 2014 as things can always change and mix things after.

I'd like to see you re-talk about this topic now that you've had a chance to play some beta gameplay of pd3, to get your perspective on which direction you think it's going from this list. Also i'm gonna be blunt... I 100% blame difficulty levels for why we moved away from roleplay-era "class" gameplay where bringing different assets held genuine benefits. Just... just think about how horrible some heists are as they currently are from previous-era pd2, now that the difficulty is so high that they outright removed damage dropoff. I beat the bomb forest exactly ONCE on dsod, and i genuinely feel ill thinking about it again, all the while i'm currently trying to train someone else in the game so there's a possibility of them POSSIBLY playing pd3 on a harder difficulty than "easy"... I also started reminiscing back when i started playing... my team literally set up specific roles. One crowd control, one Tank, one was loot focused, and then i was set up as the special-killer. My main focus, above all else, was specifically to take out the specials, so i always had to bring a specific primary, while using a secondary to keep my ammo topped off. Usually while our CC was taking out the main cops, if shields, dozers, cloakers or tasers appeared, i was supposed to be right on it, even if that meant jumping right into their face to get their attention of the rest of 'em. It was nice...Sadly, when OD was added, we had just barely began making it into DW heists, and when my group saw OD get added, they just outright gave up. it went from "we can finally earn the masks" to "no. i'm done. it's not worth it" and they outright stopped playing altogether..

i haven't played any heist in the modern era, my enjoyment ended with the linear era, as it was disappointing to me that instead of money, i'm supposed to have a goose chase, it would've been also a good option for the heists in the linear era to no be so demanding, every heist until the linear era works just fine, i remember playing the white house heist on 15 FPS maximum, my old CPU would shit itself, i just recently got back into payday and i'm more fond of payday the heist as it had a more grungy atmosphere and a slower pace. the darker feel and soundtrack of payday the heist really hits the mark better than payday 2's more electronic soundtrack, also every PDTH heist had it's own soundtrack, kinda ruins the uniqueness of the heist when all i play on payday 2 is evil eye on loop, as for the pacing of both games, PDTH was slower and more methodical because the enemies were tougher, i'd duck from cover to cover and the pauses between assaults felt well earned, whereas with PD2 I just zoom around the map in an ICTV faster than i can run in PDTH, with hitmarkers to know that i landed my shots, in PDTH i had the satisfaction of knowing i landed a headshot from the noise of glass breaking. all in all PD2 feels more like an arcade game to me than PDTH, the gameplay is significantly improved but i'd go back to PDTH to play if i had the friends to do it with

Having to manually go to the locked-out career menu then back all the way out to contracts with the temptation of choice usually leads me just wanting to play a different heist. How hard is it to implement a replayable career mode in a game they're trying to make last until Payday 3? I would honestly like to see a bit of a return of multi-day heists. I think those heist a pretty fun, and I think that by having the heist be multi-day it adds to the feeling of it being a big and important heist. I still think it could be improved though. If multi-day heist came back I would like to see them evolve. I would like to see that the things you did in the first day would meaningfully affect the later days( like how tagging the wrong truck on Election Day gets you a completely different heist). I think this would make way for way more variety in a heist and make it more fun after all. The one problem that could happen though would be like you said with the current preplanning, where the variety gets suppressed due to there being a clearly superior way to do the heist.

Spectacle does exists in PDTH and payday 2, assuming it would be practical to convey it. Crane moves on undercover with real time shadows, you are lifted into air with an helicopter while you are sitting inside a truck in aftershock, both birth of sky and boiling point has skydiving mechanic, most maps let's you destroy models dotted around the map, on panic room you can physically observe Bile running circles around the map. Even on the last map dlc, you move an entire train by a crane. Spectacle is in the blood of these games. They try to show the spectacle if it is reasonable to show, or they give the implication of it by intro voice clips (such as blowing up green bridge). This aspect of the game is never gonna go away. My concern is the overall quality and consistency moving to payday 3. It would take a long time for me to explain that sentence so I am just not going to do it. This comment is already too long.

I completely agree that the scenerios are spectacular. I just feel that too much is left to the imagination, and when they are shown, diesel struggles to convey the magnitude of the spectacle!

@@TheKknowley diesel is hard to work with when it comes to map creation. Moving elements are present on most maps, but the way they have to fake it and restrict stuff is honestly comical. On no mercy elevator, the entire map is moved, just so the players don't clip out of the elevator for example. Many moving elements for detailing and spectacle purposes are outside of the player area, so the chances of leading to a bug with, pathfinding, collisions and other stuff is minimal. There are only soo many things you can do with an engine this incapable. I am not saying diesel is incapable of presenting the spectacle since the game does have it on half the maps with stuff that breaks and moves, but it does limit what you can do with it.

I recently started and am very much enjoying playing with Restoration Mod. While maps feel the same, it changes play by just making everything more generally build dependent and partially team dependent. It’s a high recommendation for those who want older style payday combat with newer style enemies.

  • @Omnituens
    @Omnituens Жыл бұрын

I do like having "roles" on a team, the amount of combat specialisation you need to do for the higher difficulties means there just isn't room to carry a non-combat specialised build. In stealth everyone can get to every key skill needed so no one is specialised. I would like to see more parallel objectives in heists, both loud and stealth - I found that in the early days doing stealth with a team boils down to "host does most of the sneaking because of desync and clients just spot/watch cams/carry loot" or in loud "everyone sits around the drill, huddled for warmth". It would be nice to have things that a co-ordinated squad can do at the same time to speed up/get more loot, thinking Overdrill-lite kind of activities but on the critical path of a heist rather than cryptically hidden. Also, while this is a BIG ask and is less about the heists and more about the game... having recently tried Payday 2 VR I would LOVE Payday 3 to also support it. Even with the janky control mapping on the Index PD2 is a HELL of a lot of fun. I was shocked with just how much effort was put into the VR version and honestly kinda impressed the Diesel engine handles it mostly ok. If you ever need a life line for a VR challenge run give me a shout!

Challenge Run idea... Every Heist completed the way Ovk intended. Each Heist done with the four heisters that would have canonically been there, each using the characters respective perk deck a build based around how that perk is intended to be played (if John Wick is there you have someone with a Hitman-Aki Pistol build, if Sangres then you get a Sicario AR build, etc.) Would need 3 more people but could be a lot of fun

The roleplaying era was my first experience with the game. I've always thought David Goldfarb had a good grasp for how to improve the sequel when compared to the original and expand the appeal of its gameplay and doesn't get enough credit. He's publicly praised AD&D before and I think that roguelike rpg influence shows in the design of early Payday 2. More build diversity, more procedural elements and maps so that the same heists have lots of replayability without getting stale and solvable. My biggest gripe with the series is that I wish it hadn't turned into a horde shooter (reskinning the zombies of Left 4 Dead with hordes of cops). My ideal Payday 3 would honestly be more of an extraction looter like Escape From Tarkov with less enemies on screen at a time and more realistic police tactics but far more deadly gunplay.

I recently got PD:TH, and it's weird how different and cool the changes have been from then to now. I hope with PayDay 3 we get some more influence over how the heists go with pre-planning and a mix of stealth/loud because I love feeling like solid snake in stealth but sometimes it just doesn't feel good when guards just don't move, they get alerted for no reason or it just takes forever to do the heists on stealth(framing frame) and it's so tedious to do that it's almost not worth it. I like being the Jack of all trades guy in PD2 because I don't particularly excel in any " role " but I can do a lot in them all from keeping everyone alive with medic bags/kits, blasting open doors/tracking guard movement with the trip mines, lockpicking open the deposit boxes/safes and doors. It saves a bunch of time and heist knowledge helps a ton but I hope weapons get an overhaul in PD3 because I have tried so many but it always comes back to the same 3 or 4 guns being used because they are just to good with damage/ammo count and their weapon perks, even though I want to use something like the AK rifles but the ammo count is terrible and they just aren't worth their money and time to use.

Payday in general has made a transition from (attempted) gritty criminal realism to goofy, arcadey horde shooter. Most apparent in the perk decks IMO. Leech would not, COULD not have existed in 2013.

To be fair, it only has an image of gritty realism, inspired by crime caper movies. Go back to PDTH and the goofyness can already be felt. This was never a series meant to be taken seriously. I mean, five minutes after the start of every heist and it all just boils down to Left for Dead with a different skin. As new heists were introduced and the stakes kept growing, the goofy nature only became more pronounced. Again, this is apparen even in TH. After they've robbed First world bank and earned millions where else is there to go? That's like, an end goal to a heister's career!

@@croma2068 Yeah, see, the problem isn't that Payday 2 got more goofy, it's that it started out too grounded and serious. To the point that returning players from TH were disapointed with it's lack of scale, unique setpieces and overall content at launch. Going goofy saved Payday 2, gave it longevity, a possibility of narative/story as well as meme stardom.

I hate the new heist design. First off, most heists nowdays aren't even heists. We plenty of assasinations and prison breaks, but almost no actual heists anymore (yes ik there wore heists-that-arent-really-heists before too, but the emphasis was on stealing). Second off, I hate the puzzles. Having to alt-tab payday for 2 mins to search a walkthrough just to move on with the mission isnt fun, and it isn't . Thirth off, most heist to have multiple approaches to them yes, and the new preplanning mechanics are cool, but still the missions are way too linear. You select your approach, and then walk in a straight line while shooting cops untill the mission ends, only you get to chose what straight line you will walk through. Think back to something like Nightclub, Bank heist or Four Stores. They tell you to steal something, and drop you in the map to let you and your group approach the heist however you want. Those worent just "A or B" choices. You got to fully chose everything about your approach, not being restricted to strict options. And finally, heist nowdays dont feel planned. You don't prepare a drill before the hit, and then rob the bank with the drill you brought with you. Nowdays you go to storeage room, grab the banks drill and use that.

Literally the last two heists were entirely just about stealing stuff with in-depth pre-planning? And before that, we have the San Martin Bank, the Black Cat, the Dragon Heist- all focused on stealing stuff. Even Border Crystals if you wanted something Cook Off-esqe. There isn't a single puzzle in the game that's that complex unless you count Overdrill, and that's not something you'd even know about without someone telling you. Midlane Ranch is also not linear; you can tackle either side of the ranch first. I like clearing out the workshops in stealth to build all the weapons and secure them without interruption, then do the ranch house in loud. The og H&T Bank heist and Nightclub are so painfully linear that I don't think you even know what you're talking about.
