The Essence of All Vedenta Q&A | Swami Sarvapriyananda

Swami Sarvapriynanda conducts a Q&A session following the discourse on "The Essence of All Vedanta" (Based on Mandukya Karika). List of Questions:
0:10 - Consciousness is witness or (sakshi) of what is happening around us. Just like we(eg: human beings) are witnessing everything (all the things happening in the world, body mind etc), concsciousness is also a witness. So if consciousness is a witness, who or what is making the choices that we are seeing around us or even within us?
14:43 - If the world is a manifestation of our thoughts, then how do everyone in the world project the same world (for eg: we all see the same flower etc). Why not different worlds?
20:56 - If Brahman is everything (doer and the done, seer and the seen etc), what is role/purpose/significance of Karma?
29:00 - Do laws of physics apply to an enlighted person?
37:00 - What is confusion? How did we become seperate from Turiya and why/where did this confusion start/occur?

ABOUT VEDANTA
Vedanta is one of the world’s most ancient religious philosophies and one of its broadest. Based on the Vedas, the sacred scriptures of India, Vedanta affirms the oneness of existence, the divinity of the soul, and the harmony of religions.
ABOUT VEDANTA NY
Vedanta Society of New York is affiliated with the Ramakrishna Order of India. In fact, this is the Order's first Center started by Swami Vivekananda, in 1894. It was a historic event, for the seed of the world-wide Ramakrishna Movement was sown here in New York over a century ago. Swami Sarvapriyananda is the present Resident Minister and Spiritual Leader of the Vedanta Society of New York.

@@riturajacharya1472 Turiyam isn’t bound by the law of karma and hence not bound by the cycle of birth. Jeevatma is the one that goes through the transmigration where it assumes a new body. This is the collection of our thoughts and emotions and energy body (or the sukshma shariara) that reincarnates. That’s my understanding anyway 🙏🏽

He just went around and repeated standard metaphors. He never answered the question of what is behind making choices in an enlightened mind. This is so typical in this so called sravana sessions. What drives the choices is .. nature. It’s automated and the enlightened does not interfere with the manifestation of choice, as HE is aware of how nature operates and stays as witness, as he knows he is not the doer.

I don't know if this question would reach to Swamy Sarvapriyananda Puri ever but I wish it could : The question is : When we dream we experience dream world which goes away when we wake up. And then when we go back to sleep and dream again and it seldom happens that we start from where we had left off in the last dream. But in case of waking world opposite happens almost always - when we go to sleep, the waking world goes away for sure but when we wake up the waking world starts where we had left off before sleeping. This is what makes distinction between waking and dreaming. But I would love to know how does it happen or what Vedanta has to say about it. Why in dreams we seldom ever start dreaming where we had stopped in last dreams. But in waking world we always start from where we left off before sleeping.

If you had a dream (A), in which you went thru many "days and nights", would the world you returned to within (A), after every "sleep/night" within (A), be the same unchanging world, in which you continued from where you left off before going to "sleep" within (A). If it would indeed be so in that "multi-day &night" Dream (A), you need to undersatnd and explain how it so happened. If you comprehend that Truth, your "returning to same waking world" doubt will be laid to rest.

The last question should be the first one. It’s a great one! Why is there this consciousness or Brahman and why is there this phenomenological world and why is there this confusion of considering that to be real, which is the source of suffering. Why anything exists at all? The answer, as in physics, is we don’t know. The Buddhists deny the existence of everything. But this is when a dose of reality check is warranted. The purpose of Vedanta is to get us to be content and not have ups and downs and the associated suffering. Vedanta does a very good job of that.

  • @radovanradovanovic2755
    @radovanradovanovic27554 жыл бұрын

Joy.. that is your answer.. Joy comes directly from consciousness.. Happiness is from the mind but joy, that is from the Atman. That is the closest thing by which you can conceive or come close to "understanding" the consciousness. It is like positive attitude towards existence and being. Even if you are sad at the moment, there is joy inside you. By joy you are created, by joy you are sustained in Maya, to joy you will return in the end. Other thing that is Atman outside of awaker is space. Space has no opposition it is beyond duality. Empty boundless space is the consciousness of Brahman. And there is of course the light.

For the last question of where did our confusion or error of our real nature come from, swami says that there is no answer. My explanation is that if someone is dreaming and asks the question why am I dreaming, the answer can only be found when one wakes up and when that happens, the dreamer's question won't have much significance. Similarly, this question of confusion only arises when we are ignorant and can't be answered in our present state.

He says something interesting at 32:53: "That which is at a lower level of reality does not affect the higher level of reality" but then in the same breath says "maybe his heart may pound a bit" .... well? That to me seems pretty much like some effect _did_ take place. That is to say, there is only an error in this if wakefulness is a higher reality. Is it?

Appreciate the sessions.Perhaps a simpler way to explain turium to westerners would be to think about the movie matrix-where matrix is the turium and the world we live is the three stages that swami ji has described is in the matrix but turium is beyond that matrix controlling our life.

But turium is not a seperate state from first three, that's why it is not good to explain it in that way in my opinion.

Swamiji, my comment is based on the first question, which I saw as a question of Freewill. If our true nature is not the intellect, but the witnessing Consciousness, what difference does our Enlightenment or lack of Enlightenment make when it comes to the question of Freewill? In other words, just because I am ignorant of my true nature, I am still Satchitananda and not the body or the intellect and, therefore, not the doer, not the thinker, not the decider. As Nisargadatta has explained, "In Reality, things are done to you, not by you."

Swami ji, Pranam! If Turiyam is witnessing the everything, can it be said that everything (3 states + cosmic world/prakriti ) are just creation of Turiyam from the repository of experience it possess and also to create the new repository of experience within itself( concept of expanding entropy ). Further, can it also be claimed that Turiyam also possess the sense of self/ego of itself(survival instinct )? Please enlighten. 🙏

Comment on the first question. In my ignorance, since I am identified as the doer/ego, I inevitably suffer due to attachments and fears. Making choices is thus ridden with conflict. After realisation, clarity and hence choicelessness in action perhaps becomes obvious ( to the witness consciousness) as attachments/fears are dropped. Though functional choices and planning still need to be made by the ego/mind.

One question arises in my mind. How is Moksha (or releases from innumerable cycles of birth and deaths) explained in all of this? Can someone say if Swamiji spoke on this point in any of his lectures, if so, which one?

In the dream world, the different objects appear separate but the whole dream is one projection of a single mind, the reason dreams appear is due to the material nature of the mind. Using this, can we infer that although this world is a projection of single consciousness, the single consciousness has some materialistic nature?
