Great video Jose! Thanks for all your printing info, it’s been so helpful over the time I’ve been using this printer.I’ve had my P800 for a year and a half and glad I went with it! I have a tiny gallery in Australia and it’s perfect for my needs. I used to buy 6x4 photos from the big outlets at 10c/ 15c each and glue them on to card blanks but have now set my roll feeder and Lightroom to print a big run of cards in one go and cut them. I’m guessing it now costs me maybe 30c/ 50c each but the prints are so much better and I can do it at home whenever I need to! I live a long way from a city. I also print mostly with roll papers and canvas and plan my printing runs with the Matt black and then the photo black so i’m not wasting as much ink when I do the switch. I print images for sale in cello bags, framed images and stretched canvas. I shut down my p800 and unplug it out of the wall when done! Lots of electrical storms here, and I may not print for weeks at a time but it always fires up just fine. Nozzle checks are always perfect. I do keep a diary on dates I do the black ink switches and try to do it monthly but have gone over into two months without any problems. Overall I think the P800 is pretty robust!

At this moment I don't even own a printer, but Jose is such a compelling Zen master of printing technique, I simply could not stop watching him expound his thesis on the comparative virtues between the Canon 1000 and Epson P-800. I have the greatest admiration for rare individuals like Jose, who have such deep devotion to the spiritual nature of their quest that their journey takes them into the realm of transcendence. Great comparison video Jose. As you said two great printers for sure. I own the P800 myself and can say it has never let me down. Never had any significant clogging issues. If there is a week I don’t print I just run a nozzle check to keep the ink flowing. The only two things I would change about it would be independent channels for the matte black and photo black to eliminate wasted time and ink for switching. The other would be a vacuum assist paper feed as the printer sometimes head strikes certain letter size fine art papers that tend to curl during printing. I don’t see this issue with larger cut sheets though. The output on the P800 is sensational and the 80 ml carts last a long time.

Excellent review. I watched lots of your vids before I decided between the p800 and the pro 1000. I ended up going with the p800 because of the roll options and I saw that it can print on metallic sheets in one of your videos. It is my understanding that the pro 1000 cannot print on metallic sheets/thicker media, is that true? If so I a, surprised you didn't bring that up in this review. Jose, great videos. Do you happen to know of a service that allows people like you to make prints for nearby people willing to pay for them? This would keep your printers running (which they seem to need that), and provide locals with prints they need instead of going to labs. I would be willing to pay normal rates if I can get my prints turned around quicker than labs. what do you think? Thanks a lot for the detailed comparison. You mention that it's not a good idea to stack up multiple sheets of paper on the Epson due to possible skew causing paper jams, etc. How much does this apply to plain copy paper? I'm thinking of having Qimage to send a purge job once a day (or every two days) but this would only make sense if I can leave a stack of copy paper in the auto sheet loader and forget about it as one would want to do if you go on a vacation for a few weeks for instance. I was thinking of the roll feeder loaded with a cheap roll of paper, but the "cut or not?" UI prompt after every print job seems like it would destroy this kind of periodic automated purge printing?

Thank you Jose. Excellent vid. My own 2 cents: I have a Pro-1000 & I love its print quality. This has been my only Canon after several Epsons. I considered the paper length limitation of the Pro-1000 but what really did it for me was the crazy switching of the two blacks in all the Epson models. A big waste of ink/money/time over time. It is probably psychological, but it sort of discouraged me to print on different media because of this. I hated the switching. With Canon's dedicated individual lines there is no issue. My last Epson was an R3000. The build quality was a bit flimsy for my liking. But the worst thing about it was its tendency to leave black ink blobs on the page ruining prints unpredictably. I contacted Epson & they were implacable, they didn't want to help at all. The machine was just out of warranty but it had been doing this while in warranty as I explained to them. I know they weren't going to believe me so I checked on forums etc on the web whether others had experienced this issue. From my recollection, the problem seem to be widespread & would begin around 2-3 years of ownership. I finally managed to get Epson to come to the plate after harassing them somewhat. Especially after I told them I believed it was a design fault in their ink-switching mechanism that they already KNEW about yet sold that printer model knowing that particular fault would show up, then leaving the customer in the lurch. Inbuilt obsolescence taken to an extreme. And unjust because these are not cheap printers & not due to user error. Canon on the other hand have been consistently courteous & pro-active in their help with any questions I've had even to the point of quickly replacing the machine when I first bought it after I described a print nozzle issue. After the Epson incident, I finally quit them for Canon & have not looked back. I know this area of criticism was not part of your evaluation of the two printers but I think that after-sale service & maintenance are essential parts of the equation & should be researched ahead of purchase for things like inherent weak points in design, manufacture & warranty.

A K The argument concerning waste due to switching for Matt vs PK is a non-starter. Unless you trigger the ink swap every day in the p-800, the Pro-1000 waste so much ink in cleaning cycles, the P-800 will come out far ahead in ink usage.

I have two Epson printers Pro 4900 and P600 both of them require ink switch when printing on matte paper, Epson is asking the owners of their printers to waste a few mls of ink each time you do the ink switch, the argument from Epson on implementing a separate channel is lousy and Epson simply did not bother to improve this aspect of their photo printers. The color management process involved is the same regardless of what photo printer you own. Slightly different approaches due to slightly different output depending on the model and what colors they claim they produce more accurately. Canon and EPSON are not about to gift me printers for me to review favorably for them. So I would have to buy them with my own $$ so unless these new printers offer something dramatically earth shattering I have no need to spend the bucks just so I can do a review. I would like you to make a video on how you acquire your print pictures and how you sell your prints. I am an author and both a painter of abstract and realism. Audrey Weigel

Thank you for your channel. Simple question: Year 2020 knock on the door. All printers (Canon 1000, P800, P600, Pixma 10S) are 4 or 5 years old. Is it still worth it? Or do you have any information about new models? Wait or buy now? I have no idea what is the time period for new models. Thank you very much.

That question has no answer. Actually it does. I have no idea. Why? Because ink colors are used at VASTLY different rates depending on image color predominance and average density. I'll tell you this much. You will use a TOTAL of about 1.5 ml to 2 ml of ink per full letter size print.

That can vary. A pro printer like the P800 has a duty cycle of 15000 letter size prints. I am sure I will surpass that as I did on my still working PRO3800.

I imagine that I can create a print that will move the ink off the nozzle for each color. Then by printing that image daily, I may bypass the cleaning cycle. Am I just dreaming?

  • @cheo1949

Yes you are dreaming. Only a RIP can print from pure colors. However if you print said purge image and you set your driver to NO COLOR MANAGEMENT or Color Matching set to NONE it will not composite inks as much when it attempt to print a RGB CMY K purge image.

I would actually put Epson SC-P5000 into consideration for 17 inch printer, the only reason SC-P5000 should not be considered is if desk space is an issue. SC-P5000 is pretty much the same dimension as Stylus Pro 4900 which I own and it is a monster of a 17 inch printer compare to SC-P800 or Canon PRO-1000. But if you are sticking with original ink then it is far better value than SC-P800. I am taking the price info from B&H. On B&H site SC-P800 has a price tag of $895 after rebate adding $199 for the roll adaptor to the price the cost become $1194, the SC-P5000 has a after rebate price of $1395 which is $200 more than fully optioned SC-P800, SC-P5000 has 11x 200 ml cartridges to 9x 80ml cartridge for SC-P800, If we calculate base on the price of original ink cartridge for SC-P800 you get close to $500+ of extra ink

I would have if I had one but I do not the p5000 also has absolutely no support for third-party inks in case some of you are interested in switching over to that type of system. I felt that I should only report or recommend printers that I have had complete hands-on experience with.

I also wanted to keep it within the realm of a desktop type printer by that I mean something that can fit comfortably on a normal desk on wheels or the corner of your work table the 5000 is great it is fantastic I realize that like I said I don't have one so I can't speak of it but it's a little bit too large and in a different class

@@cheo1949 Yes, it is more like production type printer that requires the heavy use and also requires much larger desk space. In term of value, it is pretty good considering the larger ink tank and better roll handling feature like the paper cutter. USA seems to get the better deal with printers like this, in Australia P5070 ( Aus model) is $800 more than P800 that make it far less appealing here even when the local dealer often throw in two rollls of 17 inch Canson paper.

Great video Jose. 2 comments. 1. The pro 1000 does not have a built in colormeter, it has a built in density meter. I think you accidentally said this wrong because we’ve talked about it before. 2. This density meter does not mean I can use a custom profile from your machine and obtain perfect results. If that were so, assuming I did the density meter paper calibration, which I have, the profiles from Canon would be perfect-they are far from it. Why or how some paper manufacturers supplied profiles are great, good, or so so, I have yet to figure out. Maybe it is just manufacturing tolerance luck. I have used an Illford supplied profile that was perfect, a Canson that is extremely good, while the Canon profiles are so so.
