The English Reformation (Part II: Edward VI, Bloody Mary, Elizabeth I)

www.tomrichey.net
This is the second part of my lecture on the English Reformation. Access Part I here: • The English Reformatio...
Henry VIII was succeeded by his son, Edward VI, who supported the development of a distinctly Protestant Church of England. During Edward's reign, Archbishop Thomas Cranmer wrote the Book of Common Prayer and scrapped the practice of clerical celibacy. After Edward's death, Mary I ("Bloody Mary") attempted to return England to Catholicism but died before she could cement her counter-reformation. It was during the long reign of Elizabeth I that Protestantism was firmly established, though not without difficulty. Philip II of Spain attempted to invade England, but his Spanish Armada was defeated by a more maneuverable English fleet and by the weather.
By the end of Elizabeth's reign, England was an established Protestant country and an established naval power in Europe.

Tom Richey it is hard to engage young person (myself included ;)) to learn history. It seems like a study of "dead things", but once we found the connections, it get really interesting. Learn from the past, live from the past as a witness of the human history. "Those who fail to learn from history are doomed to repeat it" am i right.

I read a biography on Elizabeth and it had a section for Mary the whole mirror myth was when she was sick she had become physically "unattractive" to say the least and forbid any mirrors near her and once she died and the cloths were removed from the mirrors some of the workers cited that they could see her face blistered and gory

naval power shifted away from Spain, but British naval dominance is really only established after the Glorious revolution ( 1688 ) when they reform their political and financial system. Until that time their navy, although formidable, is frankly to expensive for them to keep at sea. But overall very correct and enjoyable to watch
