@@Tom_KTM I think if you just yank the plug wire and it stops knocking it's your ignition timing being too advanced, but I don't get why that would be only on one cylinder. I suppose if there isn't any spark then the piston wouldn't slam back down from the combustion onto the crank though, so that might make sense. I'd think it would still slop around in there but I guess the decrease in forces might make it knock less

@@Tom_KTM taking away the fire extinguishes the pressure by taking away the expansion cycle for the affected cylinder. It isn’t a fix but it is a patch. Basically the down journal just becomes a driven cylinder. It is what happens when you hear of drag racers “being down a cylinder” or disconnecting wires to run in displacement restricted classes.

In the old days, we used very long screwdrivers with wooden handles. We took the metal end and placed it in various places on the engine and put our ear to the wooden handle side. Based on where we heard the worst noise is where we started our looking. Today, you have all of these wonderful tools to help troubleshoot your engines. It's fascinating to watch you guys do it differently!

Been there, done that, swapped the engine. First car, a 61 Dodge Lancer. I worked on it for free to help out the lady who owned it when I was 15 & 16. She ran it out of oil and the engine seized. She got a ride home took out the title and gave it to me as thanks for keeping it running as long as it did. I went to it, threw in 3 quarts of oil and drove it home. The bearings were toast. I put in new bearings from the bottom but the crank was flat spotted. Drove it with a quart of motorhoney in it for a few months then my Uncle and I swapped the 170CI for a junk yard 225 CI truck engine. Cheaper than rebuilding the original engine. Didn't quite fit so I lost the heater. Drove it for 3 to 4 years and sold it for $500 in 73. I kind of wish I could find one now for nostalgia. That car taught me so much about wrenching. Late in life became an aircraft mechanic.

Meaning race derived road cars, like the Ford GT, might be able to skirt environmental restrictions and we might get a proper V8 in the next one.

im a mechanic, and id just like to say that there are quite a few ways to distinguish between engine noises without tearing the engine apart. Piston slap generally is a lot more noticeable when the engines cold and will heavily diminish or even disappear when the engine warms up. Rod knock will vary in frequency with RPM and will get a lot quieter if you disable the affected cylinder(unplug the injector or coil for that cylinder). Main bearing knock will be a lot worse under load and wont vary as much with RPM, it also will probably get worse if you disable the cylinder closest to the bad bearing, and sounds a lot deeper than rod knock. Lifter tick is generally pretty easy to tell that its coming from the top of the engine.

I would have preferred to hear some rod knock rather than what I actually got. I was around 4000RPM making it through a yellow light in my ‘01 Tacoma V6 Double Cab Prerunner about a month ago, and I heard one of my rods decided to rip in half. No prior knock, no warning, only had 133,000 miles on it, never been dry or without good oil. Best I could tell is the crankshaft bearing failed for some reason and the rest is history. I sold it to one of the mechanics at the shop I towed it to after getting a $6,000 used replacement or $9000 remanufactured and deciding to move on. Doesn’t matter how many people tell me that “never happens”, it did to me on a truck I only put around 4000 miles a year on 🤷‍♂️. Loving the show and learning a lot. Keep up the good work.

Super rad! I'm sure it's been suggested before, but I'd love to see a video covering all of the (current or past) Donut employee cars. Keep it up!!

From my personnal experience from a 1.5 l sohc eco with a twisted valve on the cylinder 2 i welded the pedal for about 200 km on the freeway (in france) It lasted 3000 km in total pretty good 👍🏽

My first car was a subaru that died of rod knock and now everytime my 8th gen Si's valve train gets a little noisy I experience horrific ptsd. I have taken it in to be looked over two separate times thinking it had a knock.

If a honda has a knock, 9/10 its because of western oil. it causes valve knock. put in the proper eastern oil it was designed with, and the knock will go away. and, yes this really is a thing.

I'm a mechanic and my final response would be. "I am not going to make anything on this repair, but my overlords are really hoping you approve this repair so they can steal that door rate to fund their next dealership purchase while I starve and have to buy more specialty tools on my dime"
