    mad respect for having the self awareness to bow out when a hobby’s not fulfilling, it’s definitely good to downsize too! I’ve collected quite a few boards even in a couple years of being in the hobby, and have been thinking it’s time to sell / give away some!

    It’s been an enjoyable hobby for me as well over the last couple years, in part due to the great people in it. There was a period of time where I bought into so many GB’s, but I’ve since become MUCH more selective with which boards I buy, as I’ve learned what features & characteristics I enjoy & want in a custom keyboard. Now I only buy boards that are very special or unique in some way, and have the sound profile & feel that I’m looking for. Like you, I’m planning to start selling off several of my earlier purchases in the hobby, as well as anything I never seem to use anymore or don’t particularly like anymore as my personal preferences evolved over time.

    There was so much FOMO going on for sure! Especially early on when someone isn't totally sure what they're looking for yet. Buying things slowly and reducing your collection down the line are probably the 2 biggest tips I would give to someone new to the hobby. And this would probably apply to any collection hobby

    Yeah I recently bought a DIY mechanical keyboard to sort of hop on the keyboard modding train. But what quickly fell short for me is the fact that modding a keyboard to make it sound 'better' doesn't really change or improve the functionality of the keyboard. Also, when does the hobby end? It kind of reminded me of my days as a kid when I was collecting hot wheel cars and lego sets where I would continuously buy one after another for that short term dopamine hit. Like I'm not gonna lie, it feels really good to have a thocky or clacky keyboard but you kind of habituate to the sound, get bored of it overtime and get the urge to change it up.

  • @jimmynguyen973

    For sure, one can get acclimated to a nice keyboard real fast and then the urge to buy something better grows, but then diminishing returns hits real hard. There are folks who are really picky about certain things in any hobby and it's great to hear their thoughts, but I've learned that just isn't me

    Aside from keyboards.... I had this same microphone a few years ago. Got rid of it because the buzzy quality it had going on with it (not a pun about the name). Just seems to always sound a little distorted as though it's constantly peaking. I instead got an Aston origin microphone which is just incredible and comparable with £3000+ microphones I've used in studios. All this to say... Maybe consider switching it if you can? Because I can definitely hear those same defects in yours 😅 Oh and great video btw! Really love the content, just thought I'd share that insight

    @@Zetl3D Nice! There's a kei truck (or something similar?) in my neighborhood, every time I walk past it my desire to own one grows a little more. The server hosting started off with Minecraft, hosting a server for my friends. But I didn't want to keep my main PC on all the time and then I realized my old PC with a decent CPU can host it just fine, so I moved the server over to that. Then I wanted to self-host other things so I installed some 14tb hard drives, the 2 biggest things I'm self-hosting right now is Jellyfin and Nextcloud. Jellyfin is like a self-hosted netflix, I ripped all the blu-rays I have and now I can stream them on whatever device I have. Nextcloud does a bunch of different things, but I just use it like an online cloud storage. Instead of paying Google whatever amount of money every month for more storage, I figured I'll just buy a bunch of storage and store it myself. Nextcloud also runs open-source document editing software, and you can use it as a remote collaboration tool with multiple users, but that's beyond my needs. For my next project, I'm thinking about self-hosting storage & AI detection for home security cameras, but haven't looked much into that yet

    Majority of people in this hobby are really just shopping enthusiasts, for the hobby to have more depth it requires conversation and activity around PCB modifications, swapping out SMD LEDs, adding pass-thru USB connections, flashing/building firmware. Otherwise it's nothing more than Aliexpress addiction.

    Interesting to see how far you have got throughout these few years ever since I discovered your channel, it has been nice while it lasted, that's for sure... Though, probably what I also learned in this whole hobby is that, preference on keyboard according to layout comfort plays a very important role in deciding if it will be the one we use in the long run. Other side factors such as weight and what not are the side factors of plus points to be considered, but I still feel the layout part is where it's important. I am used to the TKL (80%) keyboard layout most of the time due to how it is alright for me to cut off without the usage of num pad. While I agree there are smaller sized keyboards with narrowed keys such as 75% and 65%, I believe the variation of how the layout is introduced is what makes it interesting to try out, as there can be that particular one layout that fits well. Probably if you'd ask me, I feel ikki68 Aurora layout works out really nice for a 65% layout, planning on getting it soon from a previous owner. Edit: apparently it's a 68% from what some says, so yeah, it seems 68% is my go to in terms of preference.

  • @jimmynguyen973

    @jimmynguyen973

    Жыл бұрын

    Agreed about the layout! I really wanted to like my Rukia, it’s gorgeous but I just couldn’t get used to the Alice layout. The Ikki68 is a great twist on a standard 65% layout, even though it takes up a tad more room I think it’s well worth it to have the separated navigation cluster, giving the overall board some breathing room.

    Just a note on the paired connection for your Bluetooth keyboard: paired just means that the device has been paired before, you'll need to see connected for it to actually be working. I've ran into this issue a few times with different Bluetooth speakers/headphones and usually the issue was on the computer side and I'd need to remove the device and add it again to fix it, but there could be a more elegant solution. I think its bad naming conventions on Windows fault since paired seems to mean the same as connected. Hope this helps you regain the Bluetooth on that keyboard!

    Quite an interesting video! I felt described in some parts lol - I took an interest in mechanical keyboards way too long ago (back then, the hobby was NOTHING like it is now), and I wasn't in a good place, financially speaking. Years later, I found my love for keyboards again and I also had the means to purchase whatever I wanted, so I caved in. Man, what a journey. It was JUST like you lol... bought an Owlab Spring because I wanted to try an Alice, but then i sold it because I hated the arrow cluster location. Got a WKL KFE CE because I wanted to see what the fuss was all about with WKL keyboards, and thanks to that I found out that WKL is just not for me. Just like you, I went board after board after board because I wanted to try everything this hobby had to offer. Eventually, and just like you, I came to the realization that I had spent way more than I should've, but honestly? Thanks to that I found my own preferences, and learned to appreciate each keyboard for what it was... although I'm saddened by the fact that, even though I no longer participate in GBs and aren't even active in the community (other than the aftermarket), I became an elitist. After everything I've tried, I have a REALLY clear picture of what makes a good custom keyboard and what doesn't. Upon mentioning this, most people go "imagine caring about what keyboard someone else uses", but to be fair, if nobody cared at all, there would be no hobby - everybody would be using gaming prebuilts such as Steelseries, Razer, Corsair, etc. - isn't it a bit hypocritical to frown upon elitism when the vast majority of people in the hobby cringe over mainstream brands? But yeah, rambling aside - this video was kind of a wake up call for me... I realized that if you don't cherish at least one of your keyboards, you're not into this for enjoyment, you're in for pure and blind consumerism. To me, this explains why I'm so extremely nitpicky and selective before adding a new keyboard to my collection - way too many boxes have to be ticked in order for me to go "Buy" - I'm done mindlessly buying new stuff fueled by FOMO. I am confident and sure of what I like/dislike. That's what you get after spending thousands.

    Completely agree with drama being in the running. When I joined the GB for the Charue Supernova, I was so excited to have it in-hand. But now that the GB fell apart (blew past multiple deadlines with no communication) and Dot is MIA, I'd have trouble enjoying the board even if it somehow delivered - I would be too upset, still, about all the problems that the buyers put up with, especially those who weren't able to get a refund through their banks. And you see this a lot with people who already have boards from Charue - their asking price on r/mm has tanked after all the drama and many of them still aren't selling because a lot of people just don't want a board associated with all that crap.
