From William Faulkner comes the famous phrase, "The past is not dead; it is not even past." This is perhaps true of little as much as colonial history, in the course of which people were enslaved and oppressed and cultures and landscapes plundered. To this day, we struggle with the legacy of a bloody history that, among other things, left much of Africa impoverished and disrupted. However, the anti-colonial thinkers of that time started out with noble ideals and great visions for a new world economic order and a united Africa.
In her award-winning book "Worldmaking after Empire," Ethiopian-American political scientist Adom Getachew, a professor at the University of Chicago, traces this history in a gripping way - and draws a vision of a "postcolonial cosmopolitanism" from the historical legacy. Barbara Bleisch meets the young scholar for a conversation and asks what global justice means today and what should be done with the statues of colonial masters.
