This takes me back. My dad had a 32 foot sail boat when I was growing up. One of those things where I never really appreciated it as a kid, but I do have some nostalgia for it these days. One of those things where as a kid it felt like leaving all the creature comforts for a couple weeks in summer to be on a hot confined space with no AC, but as an adult what I remember is the family time and the various traditions we built by having that undistracted time together.

My parents had an 18’ sailboat when I was younger, just a “day” boat. We sailed on it a few times, but it was sold and we moved from the waterfront community before I could really appreciate it. I have a few memories of being out on it during the 4th of July and watching fireworks from the water, I wish I could remember more. A young me was scared hearing the cars as we sailed under a highway bridge, my dad reassuring that we were fine. I made up for the itch in recent years by owning a 17’ kayak (also a covid-era purchase), and now living a few miles from that same community. FWIW you introduced me to the Expedition Evans channel, who I wouldn’t have found otherwise. I definitely appreciate the emotions you’re feeling from a tough decision.

Hey Greg, something around 30 years ago, my parents bought a Bristol 31.1. They sold the boat in maybe around 5 years, for a larger Bristol. They had that Bristol for a good long while. But it became too big for them. My sister and I were both adults, off doing our own thing. So the large boat didn't make sense anymore. So they sold it and started looking for a smaller one. Something like that Bristol 31.1 they had. Well you know what? They bought their old 31.1 back from the guy they sold it to. They still have it now. So, I guess what I'm getting at is, you never know what will happen!

Looking at the prevalence of the "two happiest days" comments, seems like this section leans kinda boomerish. I guess it would make sense, boat ownership not really a super young persons hobby (generally). My folks got a boat some years back after not having one for most of my life, and while it's clearly also been a source of stress etc, it's also very clearly a big net positive. They try to spend as big a chunk of each summer as possible boating around the coast of Finland in the Gulf of Finland. I try to tag along for at least a few days each year. It's just beautiful out there.

I used to work with a guy that was part of a solo sail boat club and he would always tell me that you never want to own a boat, owning a boat is miserable but paying a membership to a club that lets you use their boats is the single greatest thing he ever did. He goes online and books a boat, he shows up, he sails, he fills out a short report on the boats condition and then he has a beer with other sailors at the bar to talk about the miserable times they all bought boats, then he goes home.

There's really no such clubs in my area. The best you can manage here is maybe crewing on someones boat in races via a yacht club, and that is NOT affordable. Also, there's things I want to do with a boat that can't be done with a club-rental.

Nice boat. Wrong boat for a young family. I've had many boats, and they are expensive and require constant and often expensive maintenance. They are only worthwhile if they bring you joy. I hope you find one that meets your needs. The most expensive boats are the ones that you don't use. Fair winds and godspeed.
"Hey there sailor....." -MikeMGTV (Probably)
Man I remember you talking about wanting to get a boat years ago. Guess I've been around a while lol. The memories of the boat will come along with to your next adventure!
Aww man, this got me onto a nostalgia trip about my dad's boat, and how relaxing it used to be
This takes me back.
Growing up, my grandmother had an ancient Coronado 25. All of us cousins spent a lot of happy hours in that boat.
The two best days in a boat owner's life. The day you buy it and the day you sell it. At least you learned some things. Shop for the next one. Your daughter will love it.
Love this! Let’s see some sailing vids in the future! How to sail by our how to guy.
Memories. "Hold fast to your memories, they're all that's left you." Simon and Garfunkel. We had a cottage on a lake in the Finger Lakes of NY. Had to let it go due to taxes and distance. Memories. They're beautiful if you let them be. Pink hat or some junk. Memories.
Glad to see a posting on the second channel.
Greg, having a boat he basically can't use, continues to remind me of my father :P
Have a boat drink when you get home to toast the end of the era. I spent a lot of my childhood learning to sail with my dad's family up on Cape Cod (sounds fancier than it was, honestly) and sailboats have a special place in my heart, right next to Jimmy Buffett.
Glad to see ya back posting here, love the stories.
Thank you for sharing. Greg.
BOAT is an acronym for "Bring Over Another Thousand"
Love the camera work. Reminds me of Survivor Man.
I was so concerned about HTD and then you started talking about the boat. 😂
I’ve watched your HTD show for years and never knew you were into boats enough to have one. Always thought it’d be cool to have one but I live in St. Louis Missouri and I just don’t have the space/funds for it. I think we’d be great friends under different circumstances considering you like a lot of the same stuff I do from what I’ve seen on your channels. Appreciate all you do man. Hope you and your fam are doing well.

Hole in the water to throw money down.
You really are a fascinating individual. I enjoy your take on life.
My first sailboat was 45 footer, fairly recent and modern with all the conveniences. AC, generator, Auto Pilot, yadda yadda. I sold it in 2018! I enjoyed sailing it and couldn't imagine anything smaller. That being said, still way way too much work to maintain. Days I miss, days I don't. 😢
It’s giving me yacht rock vibes. (Christopher Cross’s Sailing plays softly in the background over a montage of Greg’s boat photos)

Greg, those kids will grow up to be better and more capable future deckmates for your next, well equipped, vessel.
Huh, you have another channel. I find it strange as I thought you only materialize in bar settings like some sort of legendary barkeep in an rpg.
I did not know you had a boat. The memories are sweet though. Though I am on the team of people who say it's best to be friends with people who have a boat. My cousin works at a harbour and he alwayd said "everyone with a boat has a problem and the problem is their boat."
I'm a Guy Richie fan, Rock 'n' Rolla said it best, “The best days of a boatowner's life are the day you buy the boat, and the day you sell it.”

Sometimes the idea of a thing is better than the reality of a thing. Better to have tried it and learned than to wonder what if.
The algorithm hit me with this and I thought you were quitting HTD 😭
You know what they say about people that buy a boat. The happiest day is when you buy it and when you sell it. Also boat stands for bust out another thousand when it comes to repairs
I downgraded to a pedal drive kayak, best upgrade EVER. But...I fish, so...there's that. Boat: Hole in the water into which you throw money. The yak is going to curb that issue. Not going to eliminate it, stuff still happens. But not dealing with 1/10 the mess and I can still fish the ocean, NP.
@GregFromHTD

There's really no such clubs in my area. The best you can manage here is maybe crewing on someones boat in races via a yacht club, and that is NOT affordable. Also, there's things I want to do with a boat that can't be done with a club-rental.

Spooky thumbnail, especially with the recent storms haha.
I hope you keep sailing. Just choose a bit different on the next one. Maybe a Hunter with a swim platform, walk through transom. Good bang for the buck.
someone else is having a boat era. that is ok. also it is the most beautiful boat in the world. your tiny daughter is correct.
I like these more thoughtful videos!

Getting rid of the things we bought in the pandemic to survive the pandemic is, I think, one of the marks that we did survive and now are returning to 'normal'.
I grew up on a decent sized lake and sailed around it with my older brothers as a kid. Have you looked at getting something like a Hobie 16 or similar just to have some fun with your kids as they grow?
Sweet BoCon (boat content), Greg!
Now you make me want to sail again... 😢
My old man sold his and decided to just rent out his neighbors. Pay a flat fee in beer when they're not home, bring your own gas and ask to use the day before. It's Wisconsin so alcohol is a more valid currency than anywhere else in the US.
I thought HTD was done for a minute, and was crushed.
good talk

I've heard the call of the sea since I was a kid, but even when I do have money, I don't think I'll ever get a boat, cause there are just too many more important things
Educated Barfly music at the 6 minute mark. Waiting to hear a quip from Marius.
Guess it's not boat drinks this week
This was on my front page next to a J. Kenji López-Alt video introducing his new kitchen space... on a boat. So there's an interesting narrative here. 😅
Honestly, lack of AC would be the breaking point for me.
I have always wanted to sail my own boat
