Yaas more 40k content Luetin commenting while watching (technical heresy I know) but so happy to watch some more.I've calmed my 40k revival down somewhat as I remembered I love the lore and the universe more than the minitures as such but god I love the universe. I dunno maybe one day I'll get my finger out and do my beloved space wolves army but I'm good with the lore for now although I feel the need to buy some books.Do you have any recomendations for a good read? I'm a returning 90's fan from around the necromunda and tyranid introduction era and I just love that grim horrible future of mankind that 40k is.

Dude, seriously, these videos make it so fun to get into the lore of warhammer. Seriously, I don’t own a single miniature, I don’t know how to play, I just love the lore, and-far and away-you do the best lore work. Your videos are engaging, they illuminate the lore, you speculate on subtext in such intriguing ways, and you structured this video in particular very well. The framing with the history of early emperor with the priest was excellent. I welcome any videos you do, whatever the length, but I seriously love these long form dives into lore. It really helps paint the spirit of the world for us, I think. You show us how deep and elaborate the lore is. Thanks mate.

I always think about things like that but it actually makes sense. When we don't understand something we'll claim it as magic or the will of god but when we see a person create an electric current in their hand we can see or manifest a flame and not get burned and then we see how they did it it takes away the fantasy and disillusioned belief we have and roots us in reality which the emperor always wanted. See that which is before you is not a god but a manifestation of humanity's spirit and imaginings made real crafted by their own hand to resemble the divinity you once thought your masters now commanded by your fellow man

I feel like people are missing half of the message of the video, which is that while the Emperor is seemingly hypocritical and deeply flawed, it also seems as if (within the W40K universe) he might also be right on many of the fundamentals of his beliefs. That's what makes this element of the lore so interesting: it isn't cut-and-dry on either side of the discussion.

I think the difference from The Emperor's perspective was that religion claimed all of its acts were in service to something which couldn't be proven was valid, whereas everything he did was to further a practical goal. To "cleanse" earth so as to launch a unified effort to the galaxy. To make the best soldier in order to unify a galaxy to present the unified effort to the universe, etc. In The Emperor's mind, it was justified not because the acts he perpetrated were different in inherent nature, but in that they were to an actual ends that was actually happening. That was what made it fundamentally different. It's ironic that it was all partially to combat gods who would come to play a very real part in unmaking his practical Empirium.

@@isaakhyde8327 Religions also usually have practical goals -- rejecting the reality of those goals because they aren't your own doesn't make them any less a real part of the religions. The Emperor was just a self-satisfied zealot who sowed the seeds of his own doom by refusing to acknowledge or allow knowledge of anything that disagreed with him. Which is the point -- the Emperor deludes himself into believing he's done away with the very thing he forces upon humanity. As Durkheim argued, religion is an inherent part of humanity and cannot be done away with without doing away with humanity.

Was so disappointing. The setup was phenomenal. Would have been the perfect opportunity to provide the emperor with a proper intellectual foil.

There's a better reason for the Emperor to leave out info about Chaos: he himself, is a benevolent chaos god. This would make it extremely difficult to explain why humanity should trust only him, and not other demons / gods. This would also explain his real hatred for religion: he's disgusted with how the demons have abused it. The problem with the 'forbidden fruit' argument, is its kind of like having a child near a rattle snake. If they don't know what it is, they might try to pet it. Therefore, it makes more sense to warn them. However, if its a rattle snake, warning a human child of another rattle snake, things get a bit complicated.

I've always found it a bit suspicious that the emperor conveniently decided to reveal himself to humanity during the age of strife, right when the forces of chaos began directly interacting with the material dimension. He didn't feel compelled to help out when 40k skynet was nearly successful in exterminating humanity? I think he's very similar to the other "gods." Just as Slanesh was born of the eldar's depravity, the emperor was born out of humanity's unbreakable hope, and determination. The personification of the human will.

@Devon Crusader 40k is meant to be Grimdark so their are no true good guys as in always doing the moral thing, Its not a standard good vs evil narrative, even the chaos gods represent some good elements/ even the dark elder are toruring people out necessity no matter how much they enjoy it. The Big E either made some awful mistakes or didn't care that much when it came to some matters. I tend to believe since he avoided any long lasting power for most of human history he did care but hated the every role of the autocratic over lord so much he refused to feel, and so caused him to be narrow minded in situations with people, such as when your going to create sons

@Devon Crusader I would not say they have a higher capacity to be good, I mean korn does want that skull at the end of the day he just isn't going to stab you in the back to get it, Nurgle doesn't want to make you extinct but he does seem to think the bubonic plague is the best think since alcohol, slennesh loves when you strive for perfection even if it kills you or others, with Tzeentch of cause change can be a good thing, things can only get better when things are bad with change but Tzeentch would have soo much that he mimics the MLP Discord character when briefly took over. Ultimately they are just representations of aspects of reality but when they start unduly influencing the real world for their own power they are capable of any evil, chaos invasion corrupt the very mind so it doesn't respect any silly thing like autonomy the same with the imperium, also the chaos gods only care about their great game it seems, so in essence everyone just a pawn in this end ever.

The Emperor's greatest hubris was thinking he could, by intelligence and brute force, get around chucking out a tremendous amount of bathwater without also losing the baby. You could make a good argument that, morally speaking, he's not all that different from Stalin or Mao, and that the outcomes of his plans weren't due to some failure to execute--trying to tear a God-shaped hole in humanity's heart and replace it with Statism and Muh Science was *always* going to end badly.

Never knew that I liked Warhammer 40k before a couple days ago. Sir you are a great presenter and story teller and librarian of the vast knowledge of this games rich history and have kept me entertained for multiple hours listening. Thank you very much lol!

I’m convinced that the emperor was created at the end of the age of strife and he immediately started “manifesting his destiny” (crusading to reunite humanity). His creation ended the age of strife. That’s why he didn’t keep any STC’s from the golden age- something he absolutely should have done, but couldn’t because he did not yet exist.

Now that I think of it, the Emperor's crusade likely gave even _more_ power to Chaos. All those millions of people being slaughtered and subjugated would surely create immense amounts of fear, pain and resentment for Chaos to feed on.

SUPER late to the party, but plot twist, what if the emperor was ALWAYS an agent of Chaos. What if he keeps humanity always teetering on the edge of destruction because that's what feeds chaos? Before the times of strife, he didn't need to do anything because the Eldar were feeding chaos plenty. He didn't stop the AI wars from happening despite his foresight, because he wanted it to happen. He launched the crusade to feed the immaterium more fear and suffering. He glassed an entire planet of people who worshipped him and destroyed the faith of an entire legion publicly because he knew this would galvanize the forces of chaos already formenting in their ranks. The Horus heresy led to a permanent galaxy-wide age of pure conflict, suffering, and misery for the darkest chaos forces to feed on infinitely. What if the Emperor is the oldest and greatest Chaos God that ever existed?

Dude listening to you is like listening to the history channel on the Roman Empire but on a galactic scale and a dystopian future this is one of the coolest stories I’ve ever heard told and I only stumbled on it because it’s some game trailer. 🤙

I have to say that Warhammer 40k lore has something so amazing in it that i cant really describe it. The lore does not pet you in the back with a happy stories to relief some stress and all that but rather it lets out this raw, brutal and terrifying vibe about pretty much everything and that in every corner of this universe there is a danger lingering! If the proper people with enough respect to the Warhammer franchise were to be found we could possibly have some breath taking games and movies. (and yes i know there are games out there but non of those that i have played ever felt just about right). Thank you for making these videos to entertain us.

Hey! Hats of to you, I "played" (mostly painted) warhammer in my early teens, and I just love getting this lore dump, neigh waterfall over me. As of now im reading through the swedish poetical canon, and not only as a counterweight but as a feeding ground for new thought, I'm absolutely in love with these videos. I know this is going to sound hyperbolic, but in you more dark and gloomy days, remember and draw comfort from the fact of the millions of people that have truly enjoyed what you have created! I am, for one, thankful. Hope you are doing well wherever you are friend :)

You know while people might think that this was a story of a godly man who sought to ironically not be a god among men and eventually becoming exactly that, but the story of how mankind is ultimately stubborn. He knew the real truth, that chaos would corrupt and eat his people, and yet he still defied it. This is how humanity has always worked, it is prevalent in our own history. If he had chosen to just accept "fate", humanity would not have had a chance to at least have the freedom to be it's own doom. The path he chose was narrow, and while he and many may think he failed, I think the opposite. The Emperor succeeded because Chaos was beat back and hasn't completely corrupted his people, while a lot have died and humanity is now being humanity, at least it can remain as humanity rather than something else entirely, darkness. Humanity in the 40k universe still has a chance to shine, while we can look at it and see it as grim, if you consider the circumstances and the other potential fate for humanity, they are still the light. Light can often be interpreted as a rebellion against darkness, light being life and darkness being death.

I want to believe that if the emperor ever would wake, he would be as crass, and sarcastic as he is in text to speech

For someone so against religion, the emperor sets himself up as god, Horus as lucifer and the space marines as knights templar. Even down to unit and rank names! It's amazing just how much religious involvement there is in this lore!

I think that's what is so extraordinarily shocking about the Emperor's hypocrisy, he does every possible thing he can to make the Imperial Cult and the Ecclesiarchy inevitable.

Knowing what will happen in the future and doing something about it are two totally different things. And I've never been convinced the Emperor knew every event that will occur, for example, he may well have seen depictions of the events of the Horus Hearsay but only seen the influence of the Chaos Gods, so preventing those events becomes nigh on impossible.

How the emperor in his laser focus to save humanity could not see the flaws in his plan, or how situations of "lets chose the least bad option and hope for the best" resulted in the worst outcome. In the end, I suppose it proved the emperor right. He as indeed a man, capable of making mistakes just as anyone of us. And honestly, can any one person truthfully claim that they would have fared better when attempting such a massive task?

it's easy to criticize someone than to respect, except that if the emperor is not perfect, I don't care. Not to mention the fact that the creatures of chaos say such things only so that the loyalists turn away from the emperor and help them not to help. He is almost perfect and he can achieve it if he is open to human individuality and their sons (spend more time with them). He loves his sons but has communication problems Ps beside TTS series is canon than 8 edition of GW and their story

Lorgar was already aware of the four gods of chaos, but still believed the Emperor was ''the one''. A being that surpassed all four combined, and he was right.

It's obvious every sheet of toilet paper he uses is gold-plated and decorated frivolously. The emperor is soooo flamboyant!

Funny the believer in reason and knowledge never sat the Primarchs down and patiently imparted all he knew of Chaos and therefore how to avoid its temptations. It is worth remembering that from the Emperor’s POV a lot of what happens is justifiable. When the path to survival is narrow and so is the window to achieve it, anything that prevents it ends up damning you forever.

7:32 - The emperor said that, "Politics has slain its thousands, but religion has slain its millions." Is there a change in 40k world history and the real world history? I can think of Hitler slaining its millions. Can someone clarify why the emperor said something "incorrect"?

Emps is biased against religion, qns most likely omitted that on purpose, and this was 30k years after WW2. Uriah most likely would have no idea what the conflicts of the 20th century even were.

Didn't the Nazi's have 'in God we trust' on their belt buckles? Was religion used to couch horrendous acts and kill millions? Sure. Does that mean if there's no religion there will be no horrendous acts? Of course not. Why people think the Emperor is hypocritical I'll never know. Creating out groups and erasure is certainly possible in politics, but not generally accepted as okay on first glance. Not quite so when it's done in the name of religion. Case in point... the Emperor couching terrible acts in politics, and the large tide of rebels that rejected the notion, and were later slaughtered. 20 000 or so years later, and how many imperial citizens die for the glory of their God Emperor, working in hellish conditions or simply shot in the face to motivate the rest? How many dare to reject such notions? Terrible people will find a way to do terrible things. That doesn't mean we shouldn't try to limit their ability to commit terrible things in a socially acceptable framework.

@@rawr70101 Hitler didn't really like Christianity, but decided to use to control very religious german masses. Not 100% accurate, but that's the gist of it

The emperor must have known the future before he started the bloodshet during unification war and the great crusade. A fitting quote for this dilemma would be one I heared during the TV Show Babylon 5. The actor Andreas Katsulas said: "There is a greater darkness than the one we fight. It is the darkness of the soul that has lost its way. The war we fight is not against powers and principalities, it is against chaos and despair. Greater than the death of flesh is the death of hope, the death of dreams. Against this peril we can never surrender. The future is all around us, waiting in moments of transition, to be born in moments of revelation. No one knows the shape of that future, or where it will take us. We know only that it is always born in pain."

Almost fitting really. If one takes the shaman origin as truth then all the Emperor is was a tool of the Shamans and likely spent so many millennia disconnected from humanity

Fittingly tragic for 40k. I don't know if he was ever truly empathetic in the beginning. He was far too cold, too arrogant, too big-picture focused to care for the details of human life, sanctity, happiness, or its need for purpose and faith; but by the end, he seemed a man truly haunted by the path he'd set humanity upon, a ruler who'd realized the truth of nature of his subjects all too late. One wonders, if he was ever resurrected, if he'd weap at the sorry state his imperium stands at now, not just at its relapse but at his role towards leading it there; and if he'd still take the same approach, or if he'd try something different. A modern conversation between him and Guilliman would be something I'd kill for as I imagine they'd have a lot to say to each other after everything that happened and with all they know now. But of course, that's impossible.

I haven’t ever played warhammer 40k I don’t think I’ll ever find anyone to play with, but the lore is so rich that I’m utterly captivated by it.

I have never played 40k, but have deeply enjoyed listening to the lore in your videos.

I always had a soft spot for WH 40k, but only recently decided to fill holes in my knowledge. I knew the basics, the Horus heresy, Space Marines, The Immortal Emperor, etc. Your videos are amazing for this purpose, finally I can see patterns and reasons for things to happen, and now I love this universe even more! Now, this particular part of the lore has a strong resemblance to the Emperor Letho II from Dune series. He on purpose suppressed human kind and acted as a tyrant, so his acts would instill stubborn wish for humankind to expand, which happened eventually. Could the Immortal Emperor do something similar? Maybe in repressing religion he actually paved the way for a new religion to appear with his martyrdom as a central piece?

Don't worry about the voice, you sound fine brother. I love this concept in 40k. The Emperor, in order to lead humanity had to deceive and use humanity, causing an enormous deal of suffering, all on the gamble that peace might be attained at some point and the fighting can stop. His attributes are human attributes writ large - his failings and flaws are human failings and flaws, writ large.
