THE EMISSARY | SCI-FI SPACE SHORT FILM

Фильм және анимация

Liv Laika embarks on a solitary mission to a distant planet in search of her ancestors who fled the earth nearly a century prior. After days of radio silence, Liv begins to question whether or not they even want to be found.
Believe it or not, we built this set in my basement.

Finally a set that doesn't look like the control room of a luxury cruse liner. Ms.Chavez performance was outstanding and subtle when appropriate. Her reaction to the shaking of the ship felt real. The ending left many questions open, but isn't that the point of good SF, to provoke more questions than answers, to stimulate the imagination? I would love to see a continuation of the story. Well done and regards- Dave

@dgwachtel however, near the year 2300 as the story is supposed; the tech would be advanced to go to that planet and the ship should have some characteristics of a modern design; nothing of that here but very very possible due to the lack of a better budget.

I shouldn’t have been surprised by the non-ending. I’m so tired making the emotional and time investment in these sci-fi shorts, just to be left hanging again and again. That’s fine for the occasional exception, but when it becomes routine, it’s increasingly frustrating and comes across as a lazy way to make a story seem profound.

Intentional or not, the mission of the main character to connect with the barely known and the mission of this film to connect with a barely known viewer is intriguing. Back in 1962, published in his book, Understanding Media: The Extensions of Man, the Canadian philosopher Marshall McLuhan coined the expression, "The medium is the message". I’d suggest that McLuhan’s ideas have journeyed well, withstood the test of time, and are embedded in this, short, well done production.

Axe Guy: One of the indicators of a worthwhile production is the conversation it sparks, eh? I’m not sure if I overreached when I suggested the medium being the message may be the point of the plot, but I still think the idea is in there somewhere. That the mission is one of contrition, in the hope of finding redemption, and that it’s a solo mission is pretty powerful. I’m not sure what McLuhan would say about it; to find that out may require a journey for another time . . .

E Flanagan It wasn't too bad but coupled with the slight flex in the floor it distracted me thinking of how it might have been constructed. Just take me with a grain of salt: I was kind of a trained observer and I get distracted by a lot of things like bird song, foliage, etc., as my mind races to identify defensible positions, food sources, regions, and proximity to coastlines, etc., but also the little clues to the location of adversaries, who is concealing weapons, who's body language and others' behaviors mark out the 'alphas', number and locations of exits, and jump scares… I try to keep it in check but my sons call me 'Spoiler Alert'. It's not a game for me; it's just the nature of things I've had to do or training. Often, it's a measure of how absorbed I am or imagining being there and what will help the character survive. I know that might sound a little wierd but I'll care about characters or feel almost like I'm there. Complete immersion, I guess. I imagine all of us do this to some degree, as I've heard people even talk about 'falling in love' with characters. :)

antiami Hahahahaha!! I'm up late into the wee hours just listening to the forest-smelling the Spring come. Feels like a long time ago...and The President was a charming actor, ex-Hollywood... I was trained as an infantry officer then cross-trained as kind of a logistics officer of sorts. Imagine that you had to get a group of 'tourists' from point A to B in unfamiliar surroundings; okay? As well, these people had to move quickly, quietly, unnoticed and with minimal gear. Any terrain, perhaps even populated areas. No electronics. No paperwork. Perhaps, the best way would be to have a 'tour guide'; you know? Or maybe you just need a guy to sit in a location-that not even he knows-to stare at something curious for a few days? Well, I thought I was good. Turns out that sometimes it doesn't matter and-despite best efforts-you end up in a pooch-screw between two big dogs. Fast forward and your 'tour guide' keeps to himself still stuck a bit in the past. I'm just a regular guy with a bizarre resumé and fixated on worst case scenarios-just trying to stay 'left of bang'. Yeah...I think it actually took more brain knowledge to operate a space capsule in early NASA beginnings...tons of equipment with buttons, switches, levers and such. Very commendable astronauts could run all that...and figuring shit out in an emergency especially.

@@2wheeler58 I doubt anyone at NASA thought it was ideal. It's impressive to us looking back nostalgically and saying, "Those were the good old days, when a rusty bucket of bolts got us to the moon and back in the most uncomfortable way possible. None of those fancy shmancy computer tablets that had more thinking power than all of the NASA computers put together. That nonsense just gets in the way. Efficiency is for pu**ies.

If the door had opened and shown us who was there, well...we would have to go on to a 2-hour movie or a series. This was the perfect break. She and the humans back on Earth wanted to reestablish a connection. And she wanted to start by saying she was sorry. Use your imagination. I think the people back home wanted to ask for help.

It doesn't have to have an ending, to understand (except the lock opening the door which you opened --to leave - to begin with, and you actually find what you were looking for: Earth and the people you longed for); right back. The never-ending search for other beings (though many galaxies out there) Shouldn't we first 'figure' out -that in our short lives we have here on Planet Earth - That we first need to get along with one another.

  • @DavidLazarus

This was an excellent short even if the ending was less than ideal for me. The door merely opening leaves too many questions. Just showing someone on the other side would have been more satisfactory in my view. There wouldn't have to be dialog. Their body language would tell you a lot as well as whether or not they had a weapon drawn.

Very impressive short film with a great story. You should submit this to the channel DUST here on KZread. They specifically showcase sci-fi short films. Since yours has been one of the best I've watched in a while, it would definitely gain traction quickly, while boosting the amount of views, ultimately gaining tons of exposure for your incredible artistic visual story telling. On a side note, sounds to me like you have the coolest basement in the world now!

Given the clues presented, what can you imagine will happen next? She heard radio chatter, but nobody answered her messages. Earth is dying, she says, so the importance of contacting another human settlement in space is worth risking her life. The facility she entered at first gave the impression that there wasn't anybody home. But somebody or something is coming up to meet her; or maybe nobody is there and an empty lift will appear. What follows will be all the creative exposition to set up the next chapter or episode. The tone and style of the film suggests a more philosophical, introspective story, possibly a mystery, not necessarily high adventure or an extraterrestrial thriller. Since this looks like the first settled world for humankind, perhaps the next installment will draw inspiration from an early story in the _Foundation_ universe created by Isaac Asimov.

To armchair critics who are brusque: How many of you could make a 20:00 film... and then actually complete it? There are civil ways to critcize/convey preferences. You may not think that's an efficient function in the real world/show business, but it certainly gets a lot more done. And in the end of life, happier memories. Namaste from an old chick who knows stuff.
