    I'm not convinced that social isolation itself is as bad as everyone says it is after taking into account all the other factors. Nutrition, exercise, sleep, sunlight, fresh air, mental stimulation, etc.

  • @evanmcgloughlin

    @evanmcgloughlin

    4 ай бұрын

    Yeah to a large degree you could be correct here. As mentioned in the video a large factor here isn’t the objective social isolation but your own perception of that social isolation. There are a lot of people that live in relative solitude and they are completely fine. It’s just more common for people who live in isolation to not be very healthy and miss out on a lot of the essential factors you mentioned - Nutrition, exercise etc. Very difficult to know the consequences of social isolation in a situation where somebody doesn’t perceive them self to be isolated and has a very regimented and healthy routine. Although I still suspect there’s a primal need for social connection and people can only go so long (no matter how healthy the lifestyle) without deep meaningful human connection.

  • @AlphaCrucis

    @AlphaCrucis

    @@evanmcgloughlin Yeah, I just wish there were more quality studies that account for those factors. I think it varies on personality traits like introversion too. it's of interest to me since in the future I plan to live off grid in isolation, but I am very much into health and self improvement and am extremely introverted, so I think it should be fine. I am also very cautious though, thus I try to research this, but struggle to find data on the particulars of my situation.

    @@AlphaCrucis I completely get you and thanks for sharing your lifestyle. I agree with you that a focus on health and improvement while just simply being an introverted person should definitely mitigate the effects of social isolation. I would just be aware over time and be sure to listen to your body and mind. If you do start to feel lonely at any point I wouldn’t ignore it. That’s when it could develop into something harmful. All the very best my friend. Thank you for supporting the channel and I hope you have a great 2024.

    Corona virus pandemic is the best time of my life! I hate the death and small businesses going bankrupt. But the isolation is wonderful. There is no pressures from the social herd members trying to force us to be social so they can just make fun of us, anyway. It was proven, the recluses did wonderfully during the pandemic. Not all are the same. There is a minority that rather be isolated. If we were a minority like if we were homosexual, or bisexual, we would be celebrated. But since we are reclusive, we are considered defective people that must be cured. I see a blatant dual standard.

    Amazing video Evan! It feels like you are giving a scientific background to all those expresions we have always heard: give what you would like to recieve, fake it until you make it, the wolf that you feed... Its all about perception and what we actually pay attention to that defines the way our brains will process information in the future and affect our attitude towads any new inputs we will recieve in life. I thought of joining a nunnery, going to a mental health unit, committing a crime to go to prison or going to live on the streets for company. This is only true for the social majority. I go weeks without seeing people, except in television. People are cruel, evil, and love to victimise others to get the approval of their social herd. The one being victimised is tortured so the social idiots can have a laugh. For the victim, being social is horrible, even terrifying. For us, being completely alone is our peace. We feel far more comfort being away from the hypocrites, liars, people seeking social approval for their cruelty, and those desperate for their social herd to approve of them. There are also those that claim they love us but just want us to lower our guard so they can be cruel. Those are the worse. Isolation is not the most horrible thing there is for humans, as opposed to monkeys. For social people, it is probably the worse thing in existence to be isolated. For people like me, you social people are the worse things for us. Leave the recluses alone. We already know the kind of people social people tend to be. We do not need to be the butt of your jokes and mockery. We are getting smart to your tactics. You need us to be there so you can have your laughs. So social people, go fu¢K yourselves. I do not need to o be part of your evil game. I feel far more safe away from you social herd members. I guarantee if I were 2 meters tall and extremely strong you would not be so abusive. Social people are so pathetically dependent on each other that they have to be cruel to the recluses because their herd demands it.

    Really noticed how you emphasized perception. Then you described how our perception is shaped by what we pay attention to the most (what we focus on the most). What’s petrifying to think about, is perhaps our number one fixation is self preservation. This seems like the womb of fear, which perhaps births every human wretchedness we see in front of us. Our motives are controlled by thought of being hurt or loosing something. So much to dive into here. Great topic choice for the vid.

    This makes me feel a little less alone. I have been living in states alone for years now and working from home. I don’t have pets either-can’t afford them. There are weeks that I go without talking to any other humans. If it wasn’t for social media I would not interact with anyone. The people at the grocery store are basically it. I started a romantic relationship but I want to end it because I fear putting all of my attention on that one person is over bearing and too much. It also leaves me in a very vulnerable position where they know I don’t have anybody else to depend on. But for circumstances beyond my control I don’t have relationships with family, ex colleagues, neighbors or friends in real life to hang out with. I had 1 friend but they are very occupied with life. It’s very hard to deal with and every time people tell me I need to spend time to get to know myself I scoff.

I see a gp once a week and speak to the checkout operator getting groceries. I have 2 dogs I wish they spoke back. Its indescribable. It frustrates me that social isolation & lonliness is now related to covid isolation. I think epidemic/ sort-twrm mandates isolation and involuntary inescapable long term isolation should be defined as two distinct forms of isolation. I wish I had covid isolation - Id still have someone to speak to and look forward to.

    Stop trying to shame and force guilt into people who need to isolate themselves for several reasons. Instead, make videos about how people who don't need to isolate themselves could be more friendly and accepting to people who have that need! Make videos to them! Self-isolation is more about how people feel mistreated by the world. Quite often it's not about the individual that does it, but about how sick and disturbed the people who don't do it are.

    There is zero shame or guilt, intended by this. Also not the take away anyone else has said. I wish to educate about the neuroscience of different topics. Of course to do this I need to generalise and make population level claims. There are people who will completely isolate and suffer little to no consequences. But this is not true for a population level, the data supports this. Thanks for watching
