Researching the Effects of Social Isolation

John Cacioppo, author of Discovering Psychology: The Science of the Mind, 1st Edition, discusses his research on what effects social isolation, or loneliness, can have on people. He talks about what sparked his interest in studying the effects of social isolation, describes perceived isolation vs. objective isolation, and covers the effects of perceived isolation.

I have been isolated for so long it is poisoned with negativity. I want to get close to people but I cannot get too close. I have never had a girlfriend, I don't go outside very often unless I need to, and fitting in isn't exactly easy. I have wasted so much time doing nothing that I feel I should just stay this way. I guess I'm happier.

I know exactly how you feel i can only remember the bad from socializing with others people getting angry, letting them down, forgetting important stuff or being laughed at. So what did i do? I took some time off with myself and tried to recharge my social batteries and thought this time i got it and then it just starts all over again the same way. After so many defeats so many disappointments you start loosing any confidence you might have left in yourself and when people ask you to socialyze with others you resist fiercely in order to avoid the pain. And then finally you're just fine with living in isolation were you can do no wrong and were nothing is expected of you.

@@shivanisaxena2052 I'm glad you asked. In previous years I have socially isolated myself and now I see that this is a trap. We do that in order to avoid the anxieties and fears that come up with human contact (our own feelings of social inadequacy, rejection, etc...). The problem is that by doing so we lose much of our skills in other areas too and as time goes by the fear grows and our safe zone gets even smaller. We are basically "safe" but unhappy. I'm a cognitive psychologist, therapy has helped me much and I say that going step by step, approaching the things I was afraid of one by one and little by little I could discover other sides of people and of myself. Today I can say I'm glad, with friends, living with my girlfriend for 2 years and generally satisfied with myself (albeit not free of problems, of course hahaha) And how have YOU been my friend?

I'm a 23 year old male, grew up in an abusive family, never had a friend, girlfriend, so I have never felt what love, and friendship feels like, and honestly I've never talked to a person on a personal level, whenever I talk to another person it's the basic "have a good day" to the cashier at the grocery store, or asking the supervisor at work what I have to do that particular day. I don't feel like a normal human being, there have been times when I've gone weeks without saying one word to another human, and I really don't know where to begin to try and improve, at this point in my life, the situation I grew up in I know I'll never fully recover, but I would be satisfied with some improvement, eventually make a friend/s, find a girlfriend, and live a somewhat normal life, but I just don't where to begin? How much would a psychiatrist really help? I feel like pills would just make me worse.

That's exactly how I feel. I lock myself in my room with all of the lights off. I feel like the world is out to get me sometimes. Idk if I would call myself paranoid but I do have a lengthy history of depression since age 10 and high functioning autism. I also get explosively angry thinking about social situations and usually break my belongings (I think I have intermittent explosive disorder and borderline personality disorder). It's hell living through and it feels like crawling on glass shards or razor blades trying to better myself. My biggest fear is my depression worsening and the possibility of suicide, but I love my family too much to put them through the torture of the loss of me. I'm torn on the matter and it's slowly devouring me into state certified lunacy. I'm sorry for writing a book, but a lot has been on my mind and I just had to find an outlet, any damn outlet I can find.

Being isolated is fantastic, i achieve great things when I'm isolated from motivational music, inspirational videos etc. I will only watch these when I'm alone under total, complete peace of mind and disconnected from frustrations. Isolation brings about passion, focus, determination, drive and a string will power for success. There is no better feeling than when everything is quiet meaning you are the only person in the room and you are motivated by whatever it is that makes you motivated. I am a dangerous but positive person at the same time when motivated, isolation brings about the motivation where there is complete concentration.

It depends. Voluntary isolation can be incredibly useful for motivation and creativity. Involuntary isolation generally leads to a lot of confusion, anger, and resentment towards the self and others. All of those things are poison to a healthy mind, making it much harder to be motivated. Hence why withdrawn people sometimes struggle to even eat a full meal in a day. The will for life has been corrupted.

Classmates always isolate me. Idk what I am doing wrong, most of them don't even speak to me. This is why I am always quiet. I do get depressed because of this but it isn't my fault why they always do this.

I don't think so. I am never bored. Social isolation, that is, when others choose not to spend time with you, is not something you choose. Solitude is chosen and often a joy. Boredom, to me, is unrelated. If lack activities,in your life, these activities or ways to occupy your mind do not have to include other people. Writers and artists spend many hours working on projects alone.

I’ve been alone for most of my life, for the past 2+ years I have actually been living alone. I’m 31, I live in a 320 sq ft box and never hear or see anyone for 4 straight days a week. I “play house” with the people I work with, but don’t understand most of the things they find important or funny. I believe that most people have high expextations of how the world and our interactions should be, I’ve lowered mine drastically and I can see things for what they truly are. I choose to stay away from other people unless I have to interact with them. I spend my time playing games, reading, and drawing. Though I’m alone, I never feel lonely. Drop your expectations and learn to live with yourself, you are the most important person in your life :)

The world doesn't want to be bothered with those people who are isolated. I reach out to friends and family without any response. I often wonder if there really is something wrong, why doesn't someone tell me and get me out of this hell. I feel like I've been stranded on an island and the map to find me was thrown away.

People can be on their own and it doesn't bother them, or they even like it. Others need people around them constantly to feel contented. When I was suffering depression, I didn't like being at home by myself for even a couple of hours. Now I can be alone for most of the day and be OK. It is a burden and a pressure to be too needy of company, as it cannot always be found. I'm not alone everyday and have plenty of friends.

I don't know, is it's loneliness that's causing all these problems, or is loneliness a symptom of too much introspection? If an individual develops more compassion for others, and focuses on making life better for others, even when being isolated they will begin to not feel lonely and develop happiness. Someone coming here is just going to feel worse drawing conclusions from the correlations you've mentioned. I'd suggest you watch what the Dalai Lama has to say about loneliness for a different perspective.

What about people that have a tendency to desire or want minimal social interaction, i e those that prefer majority of isolation or alone time and on occasion do a kind of "touch and go" with socializing, only to return back to isolation? Is there a difference between introverted people and extroverted people with regards to the study? The Issues of wrongful separation can include social isolation for the children and a parent, which can be extremely difficult, and can happen in cases of divorce or family court. Is this issue really being properly addressed in courts? What happens when children are improperly separated from their parents for months, or even years without any communication? If you have any related research on this issues, please post. Here is an example of points and quotes on problems of being socially isolated.

I've been 2 years isolated due to some legal issues I had in the past. It's destroying my health. I assume people are evil by nature. I need to find social groups.

it might be easier than said, but what about volunteering somewhere? or joining a sports, board game, book club, conferences, language exchange cafes, etc...just saying, a lot of people out there are trying to organize events for people to connect and do something together, its a human need and sometimes, the only way to make things happen

From what I know, isolation doesn't happen because of a person's non-participation in such groups. If a person chooses not to participate, that's a lot different from rejection, such as....if you call people and they don't call back, if you join clubs but find you're unwelcome there, or if your school friends reject you. People who are already unemployed face discrimination based on their unemployed status alone. Someone told me that due to prior unemployment, after he lost his job it took him a full year to find a new one. The one thing I hate hearing on Thanksgiving is that because I don't have family, I somehow owe to the world to volunteer at a soup kitchen. I don't care to be around the other volunteers who are later going home to be with their loving families. It breaks my heart.

i prefer isolation, i feel happier when i'm alone. somehow i can't seem to find anything about people who are the same as me. everything is always "isolation makes ppl feel lonely and depressed", but i feel neither. i have no desire to have any interaction with people, i isolate myself from others physically and emotionally and feel happier than i have been in my life. "humans are social animals" i guess i'm just a strange animal.

The human species is only social because it was advantageous to be so in order to survive a hostile environment. This is singularly the crudest human existential imperative which remains dominant to this day despite advances in technology. Without clearly defining and attributing appropriate values to other imperatives then all utterances with respect to what constitutes natural interpersonal relationships will consistently lead exploration into human social psychology nowhere. When one examines modern achievements they are scarcely ever the product of groups but individuals who are almost invariably the initiators of group actions without which there would have existed a vacuum out of which nothing would have emerged, not even a concept upon which the group could act, rendering any group effectively aimless and with neither purpose nor cause, history again repeatedly testifying to that. This is patently self-evident. Traditional academics are quite adequate at gathering and organising data, what they consistently fail at is in the interpretation of that data largely due to the failing psychological models they employ, in addition to poor definitions, descriptions and characterisations of existential concepts such as "Mind, Consciousness and intelligence (to the extent that such definitions even exist in the respective institutions).

And loneliness can felt due to your environment, if it's toxic for you change it. Mental health comes first...please make sure anyone reading this goes to a psychologist. I haven't talked to another human being other than my wife for three months, I never leave the house, have no friends or social circles. I've been cut off from people for so long I dont know how to talk to people. In reality I've been completely cut off for about 2 or 3 years, I cant really remember anymore. I dont know what to do, I just wanna give up, I have no purpose in life, I just exist. There's no point, anytime I try to talk about it, it just turns into an argument because my wife is extremely co dependent and turns everything around on me, making my feelings and perspective seem invalidated or just a symptom of my disorder. I dont even know why I'm commenting all this, I just have noone to talk to.
