-----------------------
You’re a kid growing up in New York in the lower class and you spend your childhood seeing your parents struggling to make ends meet. You see these local wise guys, mafia members, hanging around your neighborhood. You start to idolize them and come to the conclusion that the working man really is the sucker, something that you vow you’ll never be. You set your mind on becoming a mafioso.
The mafia is a business. A typical business makes money by providing value to the world, by solving customer’s problems. The mafia has an advantage. Instead of making money through providing value, they make money by doing the exact opposite. Out of all the different ways they make money: protection money, infiltrating labor unions, or just some good ol’ fashion robber. Most of them revolve around taking value from people by force.
If you want to be a mafioso and command all the status that you so desperately crave - you have to know your place in the organization. You’re one and only duty is to help. make. the family. Money. You can be an earner or be an enforcer. The mafia that operates outside of the law, they’re gonna need someone to enforce their rules and contracts to make sure they get their money. pick your poison, but if you happen to be one of those rare breeds that is great at both… viscous at the negotiating table.
Just like any other well-oiled organization, the military, corporations, etc, the mob has a very well-defined hierarchy and structure that you need to climb. At the bottom of the pyramid are the Associates. The goal of an Associate is to eventually be initiated into the Mafia as a Made Man, with the next rank being a Soldier. To become an Associate as a teenager is pretty simple, the Mob loves grooming kids from the streets when they’re young. Once you’re an Associate, it’s game time.
Make your bones as the ultimate sign of trust. you have to be sponsored by an existing Made Man. Carry out a hit, that you take the life of another human being in the name of the Family.
Now you’re free to move up the ranks. Your duty is to help with the rackets and find new innovative ways to make money for the family. All the different crews of a family take orders from the next level in the chain of command. You have the Boss - the CEO of the family that has the final say on all decisions. You have the family’s Consigliere, the family’s advisor and the Boss’s right-hand-man who’s usually a trusted friend and confidant.

A few minor inaccuracies: Not all associates are runts, lowest of the low. Some are multi millionaires, important crime figures who made entire careers working closely to the mob, being more important than some bosses. Sure, within the official ranks of La Cosa Nostra, you’re nothing. But in reality, you can be a king. You also do not have to kill anyone, necessarily, to join the mafia. It used to be industry standard, but it was never a 100% requirement. As several made men has said “there weren’t enough hits to go around”. Other than that, great video.

John Gotti, probably the most notorious mob boss right behind Al Capone, was never officially linked to any murders. It's widely believed he never pulled the trigger. Now of course he ordered many hits. But it's rumored he may have popped Tommy DiSimone (joe pesci goodfellas) in retaliation for what was done to Billy Bats who was not only a Gambino but also close friends with John. But still, never proven he actually killed anyone.

Is quite fascinating. Asian mafia (especially the Yakuza) has a long story that goes way beyond the last century, their codes of conduct are inherited from samurais and they have extensive influence in the political history of Japan. They are really quite different from what the westerners understand by Mafia (especially latinos like me, used to see shitty teenagers street gangs as the reference)

Exequiel Cáceres Yakuza are quite an interesting gang or bunch. Their the most wealthiest and biggest crime syndicates in the world, but they live in the most safest country in the world with 99% conviction rate. Their also in decline from what I’ve heard recently, And something else, their also a lot less violent. Japan has very few gun related crimes. If the anime’s and games are true, then they rely heavily on martial arts. The most powerful mafias in the world are in my opinion are russian mafia and Chinese mafia. Who are directly aligned with their government by helping them control the crime in their countries. The Russian mafia especially. Be you haven’t heard the exploits of semion mogelevich of the solnsevskaya bratva. He is currently the wealthiest and most power mafiosi. He is a good friend of Vladimir Putin and was on FBI’s most wanted list but was taken off, because the fbi were never going to catch him. He has FSB on his side and is part of Russia’s oligharcal order. P.S I’m also Latino. The Latina American mafia or cartels, because they don’t really have a tradition or cult of organization. Their all United under the idea of smuggling drugs to America are probably the scariest mafia. Beheading, torture and kidnapping are something they regularly do.

From what I have read, the consigliere is also important for reasons of impartiality. As you say in the video, there is a lot of ego floating around and emotional intelligence at play. To have an impartial reviewer be able to critique the boss in private must be a massive benefit so that the criminals "keep it real."

Fancy meeting you here Economics Explained! Been binge watching your video the last couple of days 😃 ... Yup! I know Broken window theory from Malcolm Gladwell’s Book, if u fix one broken window, well there’s less chances and reduction in crime ... if u walk down and see a broken window, then you get the feeling anything goes and there’s no laws there and thus the higher probability of crime rate. I think this video is reverse broken window theory mafia style ... If we don’t want our windows broken, we better pay up for “protection”
@dasquick
3 жыл бұрын
@@Napstone You are referring to the Broken window theory of crime, this is also different from the broken window fallacy. The broken window fallacy refers to the thought that destruction can be productive. This is impossible but often sighted as people say the bright side of the hurricane is the jobs and rebuilding or at least during a war there is more economic growth. This is explained by Bastiat with the seen and unseen, yes you see the window get fixed but you do not see the economic activity that would have happened had the window not been broken at all. Same with hurricanes or wars it is harder to see the economic growth that would have happened had they not happened and often those effects are so widely dispersed they would be impossible to measure, yet they remain.

I do think it would be interesting to explore the economics of organized crimes in it's origins. I remember reading years ago about how a lot of gangs and crime organizations tend to start in poor and repressed areas, and these organizations tend to serve as something of a balancing force, to try and help make up for the agency and dignity the people already lacked
One reason why hollywood came up with this "honor and family in the mafia" idea was because when certain famous mafia films were being made, the mafia was still in power. And so the mafia tried to influenced these films to make them seem like "honest criminals" instead of a bloodthirsty, conman and murders.

About time we need a 'Mafia of Economics' rather than 'Economics of Mafia' to get us out of current recession.
I'm going to say it... That's how mafia works.

Make something about the Chinese or Japanese or any other asian mobs. We don't really get a lot of them here.

Great video! Enjoying this channel, keep the good work up!
Despite what J. Edgar Hoover and Jake Tran said, the Italian mobsters never called thamselves "la Coso Nostra." They called themselves "cosa nostra," Italian for "our thing" or "this thing of ours." There were also local variants, such as "the organization," "the office," "the family," "the arm," or "the outfit."
OH YES! I always wanted like a detailed video on this! Every since my fascination with the Mafia and thier hows.
These videos are extremely interesting and fun to watch, keep it up man!

In case anyone was wondering, the Broken Windows Fallacy is a refutation of the idea that regrowth following destruction will result in a net growth, especially with regards to war. There is also the Theory of Broken Windows that says that the proliferation of neglect and minor crimes will foster an atmosphere of lawlessness, i.e. if there's broken windows and grafitti, people will think they are in a lawless environment. I'm not really sure what either has to do with shakedown rackets, though.

The Editing of this video is AMAZING
Excellent! I’ve been devising ways to create my own criminal empire all week! This is so helpful!
When you do the omerta video it should probably be a topic of how to keep people loyal, or something along those lines.
In the last section, the Underboss and the Consigliere are on the same level, with the Godfather above all. Great video otherwise, so much fun. Editing was spot-on.
Love your channel man!

In all the mafia docs it's usually narrated by someone with a rough voice. I think I like it more with Jake's Morgan Freemanesque movie type voice.
Jake has enough associates here. He doesn’t realize he’s already The Don
