If this does give you support and seems to help, I would look for a more permanent solution like a wrist widget.

I've used this method to support my TFCC tear for a couple years now. While I find the KTape much more comfortable than an actual Wrist Widget, of course I can't take the KTape off and reuse it later. That's led to me leaving it on for long periods of time, which of course isn't great for my skin underneath. I would really love to find a compromise solution that is both more comfortable than a real wrist widget and reusable. But this also raises another question I haven't managed to find a clear answer for: are *both* bands of the Wrist Widget design really necessary for stabilizing the TFCC? I'm no expert in the anatomy here, but I'm wondering if a single band on the "far side" of the ulnar styloid might be sufficient? In other words, I'm wondering if the second band closer to the elbow might just be to stabilize the other band, which would imply that a single stretchy tape band on the hand side might serve as a more minimal support? I'm actually experimenting with this right now, but figured I might as well as the experts at @TheUpperHand. :)

My OT gave me a wrist widget and it undoubtedly helps with a lot of problems I've been having, like my forearm burning with hand use. But the widget really inflames the two thumb tendons by putting pressure on even just the base of them. Do you think using tape like this could deliver the benefits of the brace but still not bother the tendons? And is it normal for the relief on the TFCC to come with clicking in the wrist? Again, the issues undoubtedly reduce with the wrist widget, but there is an uncomfortable clicking when it's wrapped or, upon attempt, taped. My OT is a hand specialist but she seemed confused when I mentioned that. Like I get the sharp pain you get with the De Quervain's thumb and wrist test after a couple hours of wear. That inflammation and pain goes away if I don't wear the brace, but then I have a new set of issues. If I loosen it, the brace slips away from its beneficial support. I'm currently McGuyvering with a cheap spica splint just to have any cushion between the brace and tendons as well as to stop the thumb from using them as much.

I have the exact same issue. When I have the widget on and I do the weight bare test, the pain that shoots up into my thumb is so intense I have to stop. My OT couldn't understand it.

  • @TheUpperHand

In my experience, taping usually won’t keep a nerve from subluxing. I’ve tried many times at the elbow and you just can’t comfortably get the tape tight enough.

The first layer is an anchor that sets the tension on the fascia and anchors on the ulna to pull it towards the radius, reliving tension on the TFCC. The extra layers just reinforce the base layer, 1) because the forces are all going in the same direction, and 2) the tape anchors to tape better than to skin.
